She was never engaged and apparently decided rather early on that she didn't want to marry at all.

Prince Xavier, however, wanted to marry her and proposed a few times both shortly after she became Grand Duchess and then again around the time of her abdication (before and after). He told her that him being an allied soldier would benefit her in the eyes of the foreign powers trying to annex the Grand Duchy and some sources indicate that he even agreed with only getting engaged without ever actually marrying to help her out of her situation. Grand Duchess Marie-Adelaide, however, refused any engagement.

In Italy Marie-Adelaide joined the Carmelites, later the Little Sisters of the Poor.

She was totally impopular and has to abdicate. Her sister Charlotte saved the monarchy. As she was completely out of life and retired as nun even if she wrote her memories, the Royal Court of Luxembourg should never authorised their publication , for the safe of the future of the grand-ducal family. Kind regards
Do not underestimate Maria Adelaida. She could persist and not abdicate until it was too late, as happened with the Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Thanks to that she understood, she sacrificed her person, to save the grand duchy, in the hands of Charlotte.

Marie Adelaide deserves her name to be rehabilitated, for the History.

Beautiful and very complete video about the life of the Grand Duchess María Adelaida, based on the book by author Edith O'Shaughnessy.

It will help us to know more about the young, kind and tragic Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.
