Is that a royal custom? Without remembering where I read it I seem to recall that Swedish queens didn't take part in their husbands funeral until the mid-1800s.

It was certainly a custom, though not universally observed, that women didn't attend funerals.. in the 19th century in the UK at least.

:previous: A bit about it here

Yes a custom, but by rule not always followed. Queen Adelaide attended William IV's funeral.

Much earlier neither the king or queen would attend a funeral, even their spouse's. They would instead send a chief mourner in their place.

Even by the time of Felix's funeral, there was the idea that a woman crying and mourning in public was not a mark of class. So attending the funeral, but not being involved in the funeral procession (being at the cathedral before) allowed for both. She could attend the funeral and mourn, but not make a public display of her grief.

How times have changed and most recently the current Grand Duchess consort did not even wear at hat at her father in laws funeral.

A little Story about them and no funerals :
The Grand Duchess and the Prince went hunting in the Belgian Ardennes. On their way back they decided to spent a night in a hotel.
They went to a Hotel à la Barrière de Champlon to spent the night . They were not well dressed , dirty shoes as they were incognito they had a small car. They were refused.
They went to an Hotel at the other side of the Street, they were accepted.
They asked to give to the Hotel who refused them their Visit Card: TRHH the Grand Duchess and the Prince of Luxembourg.
