On February 12, 1771 king Adolf Fredrik, Adolf Frederick, King of Sweden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , died after having eaten a large evening meal. He is most known in Sweden for having eating too many hetvägg (semlor) during his last meal and for being replaced by the government with a name stamp for signing royal documents, as he was considered being uninterested of ruling. He was the father of king Gustav III and king Karl XIII, and husband of Louisa Ulrika of Prussia, Louisa Ulrika of Prussia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Emperors, Kings & Queens, Sonya Newland wrote:

For all his lack of courage and conviction Adolf Frederick is reputed to have been a kindly man towards his family and servants.

The Coup of 1756 was an attempted coup d'etat planned by Queen Louisa Ulrika, King Adolf Frederick's wife, to abolish the rule of the Riksdag of the Estates and reinstate absolute monarchy in Sweden.

At Facebook of the Royal Armoury
"Today's date: August 18, 1744 the Prussian princess Lovisa Ulrika and the Swedish crown prince Adolf Fredrik married. About 300 guests had gathered in the Hall of State at Drottningholm Paalce to attend the wedding ceremony. The king, Fredrik I, led Lovisa Ulrika into the wedding hall ... After the wedding an evening meal awaited in the large dining room and during the whole dinner the royal court orchestra played in an adjoining room. The music was the famous Drottningholm music composed especially for the wedding of Johan Helmich Roman.
The day before, the bride and groom had arrived at Drottningholm under cannon salute with a newly built sloop, accompanied by eight flag-adorned ships. During the journey over, Lovisa Ulrika dropped her fan so that it fell into small pieces. The future groom collected the pieces and handed them out as a souvenir to those present and joked that an order would be instituted in memory of the event. So it was, L'Ordre de l'harmonie, Solfjädersorden, was very rightly instituted but only awarded for a short period. The Order is preserved in the Collection of the Royal Armoury."

In 1743 Adolf Fredrik was elected heir to the throne of Sweden by the Hattarna. Why did he have to be elected?

Prince Adolf Fredrik had to be elected heir because as a distant relative of the former Queen Ulrika Eleonora he wasn't in in the line of succession. A new heir was needed because her nephew Prince Karl Fredrik, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, who had been considered first the heir to her brother King Karl XII and then to herself, had disqualified himself when he married Grand Duchess Anna Petrovna of Russia and because he favoured rapprochement between Sweden and Russia. Their son Peter became Emperor of Russia in 1762.

By his marriage to Princess Louisa Ulrika of Prussia (which took place on 18 August/29 August 1744 in Drottningholm), he had the following children:
  1. (Stillborn) (18 February 1745 in Stockholm)
  2. Gustav III (1746–1792)
  3. Charles XIII (1748–1818)
  4. Frederick Adolf (1750–1803)
  5. Sofia Albertina (1753–1829)

With Jeanne Du Londel he had one son:
  1. Adolf Fredriksson (c. 1734-1771), Captain in the Swedish Army.

With Marguerite Morel he had one son who died as a child:
  1. Frederici (c. 1761 - 1771)

Adolf Frederick may have been the father of Lolotte Forssberg by Ulla von Liewen, but this has however never been confirmed.
