It is sad that King Alfonso XIII blamed Victoria Eugenie for bringing the hemophilia into the Spanish royal family.
What is ironic is that he had been so determined to marry her.
He fought the obstacles. Victoria became Catholic. Her uncle, King Edward VII, raised her style to Royal Highness.
However, no one could undo the hemophilia.

Exhibition "Letters to the King. The humanitarian mediation of Alfonso XIII in the Great War "

On the occasion of the centenary of the First World War, National Heritage and the Banco Santander Foundation, present the exhibition "Letters to the King. The humanitarian mediation of Alfonso XIII in the Great War ", in the Temporary Exhibition Rooms of the Royal Palace of Madrid.

The exhibition reflects the key figure of King Alfonso XIII in the benefactor action, practically unknown, but which was of enormous human and diplomatic importance in the struggle of the early twentieth century, especially with Belgium, France or Germany.

I know that King Alfonso did his very best to mediate an exit from Russia for the Imperial Family. He offered refuge should they be released, as well. Victoria Milford Haven made a point of thanking him for his efforts after the War.

Given he was related to most of the Royal and Imperial houses it must have made staying neutral a difficult task!
