Alfonso X established Castilian as a language of higher learning. He was an author of poetry, such as the Cantigas de Santa Maria.

Sepulchral tomb containing the entrails of Alfonso X (1221-1284), King of Castilla and León. The urn is placed in the main chapel of the cathedral of Murcia, and the rest of the body of the king is in the Royal Chapel of the cathedral of Seville.
