If you go to the front page: http://www.theroyalforums.com/ then there is a link to the "Live" Royal Chat Room in the left corner there.

The other administrators and moderators and I are trying to work out how to best utilize the chat room function to its fullest capabilites. We've tried to organize chat times, whether it be random times or around special events (such as the Primetime Live interview with Prince Harry), but only a few members ever showed up.

What does everyone else think is the best way to get members into the chat room?

If you could provide information on your pages which indicate how many people are currently in the chat room, that might help. "x members now chatting" or something like that. People will most likely be tempted to join in if they know others are there. And, the brave first-chatter is more likely to hang around waiting for others to join, knowing that her/his presence is advertised.

How about de-linking it from special occasions ... and just make an announcement that it is open?

Its probably one of those things that people have to "warm to" ....

Actually we have done this on a previous occasion, but that didn't seem to help us attract more chatters either.

We've actually tried a lot of things to bring members into the chat room. We've tried spontaneous, spur of the moment announcements of chats, and when members said that they wanted to know more in advanced, we set up a chat session with an announcement a week in advance followed by announcements that day and in the minutes before and during the chat and this didn't help us to attract chatters either.

Most often it seems that it is us mods talking with each other joined by a few other members.

I plan to integrate the chat room a bot more so we can see who is in there more easily. (within the next month)

I read Alexandria's reply and now am wondering if chat is available at all times or whether it's only available if a moderator "opens" it. Is that the case?

The chat room is always open (as far as I know). Though it can not be certain that there are people in there at all times. The goal is to set times when there will be several people in there, so that the actual chatting can take place, and you don't end up talking to yourself...
