It is sunny outside - and I've been stuck inside, working on the final paper of my bachelor's degree. I've been working on this for a long time now, and what I have appreciated the most about this process… is having somewhere like TRF to come to when I can't make sense of the theories and data that is needed for putting it all together. Just thinking about something else when I am stuck, is invaluable. I'm sure that many of you are also stuck in this process - finishing up a school year, or work-projects before the summer holidays.

What I've done this time, is to focus on the avatar galleries, more specifically the historical section. We've added loads of new avatars there, for those of you interested in historic royals, and it is very much a work in progress. With the Tudor mini-series going on television in the States, we have countered this by adding avatars made of the real Tudors.

Glitter and gold is something that is part of being a royal watcher it seems. "What tiara is she wearing?" "Which order is that?" We've tied this into the historical theme, and in this newsletter will be presenting some of the coronation jewels for your reading pleasure.

Have a nice June,

Norwegianne

The British Coronation Regalia

The coronation ceremony for English/British monarchs is ancient, dating back over a thousand years; the coronation regalia, however, are not. The crown jewels were sold or destroyed during the rule of Oliver Cromwell in the mid-17th century, and most of the crown jewels in use now date from the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 or later. The crown jewels, along with other components of the Regalia such as the gold plate and the coronation robes, are housed in the Tower of London.

The crown used during the coronation ceremony is St Edward's Crown, which was made in 1661 for the coronation of Charles II and is therefore one of the oldest pieces in the Crown Jewels. The lower part is believed to have been made from a medieval crown, perhaps that of Edward the Confessor. The crown is made of gold, decorated with diamonds and coloured gems, and the arches (which dip in the centre, a characteristic of a royal rather than an imperial crown) are trimmed with rows of pearls. The crown does not contain any well-known or particularly valuable gems; its value is in its symbolism and history. Its weight (82oz or 2.3kg) makes it uncomfortable to wear for any length of time, and after the coronation ceremony it is exchanged for the much lighter Imperial State Crown.

St. Edward's Crown - The British Monarchy

The Imperial State Crown is worn by the monarch when leaving Westminster Abbey after the coronation ceremony and also during the State Opening of Parliament. This crown is more modern than St Edward's Crown; the first Imperial State Crown was made for Queen Victoria and was used during both her and King Edward VII's coronations instead of the much heavier St Edward's Crown. The current crown was reset in a new frame for the coronation of George VI in 1937. It is made of silver with an armature of gold to strengthen the frame, and it contains several very valuable jewels including the Lesser Star of Africa (at 317 carats the second largest diamond from the Cullinan diamond) and the Black Prince's Ruby, a large spinel. On the back of the crown is a large sapphire from the crown of Charles II, and at the top of the arches are four pearls said to have belonged to Elizabeth I. The arches of this crown do not dip in the centre, a characteristic of imperial rather than sovereign crowns. The sapphire in the middle of the cross surmounting the crown is said to have belonged to Edward the Confessor (who reigned from 1043 to 1066).

When a married King is crowned, his consort is also crowned during the ceremony. There have been many consort's crowns over the years, starting with the crown made for Mary of Modena, consort of James II (Charles II was unmarried at the time of his coronation). Each Queen Consort in the 20th century has had her own crown, and Queen Elizabeth's crown, made in 1937 to match the Imperial State Crown, is the most familiar. The Queen Consort's crown has a platinum frame to reduce the weight and contains the Koh-i-Noor diamond, which is traditionally believed to be unlucky if worn by a man.

The Sceptre with the Cross (also known as the Royal Sceptre) was made in 1661 and redesigned in 1905 to accommodate the Great Star of Africa, at a huge 530 carats the largest of the diamonds cleaved from the Cullinan. This sceptre symbolises the temporal authority of the monarch. It is about 3 feet long and is made of gold surmounted by the Cullinan I diamond, a large amethyst, and a cross set with diamonds and an emerald. This sceptre is held in the monarch's right hand during the coronation.

The Sceptre with the Dove was also made in 1661 for the coronation of Charles II. It symbolises the spiritual authority of the monarch. This sceptre is nearly 4 feet long; it is made of gold and is surmounted by an enamelled dove. This sceptre is held in the monarch's left hand during the coronation.

The Sovereign's Orb, also made in 1661, is a hollow gold ball measuring about six inches across; it is surmounted by a jewelled cross resting on top of a faceted amethyst; the cross represents the sovereign's role as Defender of the Faith. During part of the coronation ceremony, the orb is carried in the monarch's left hand.

The Ampulla is a hollow gold vessel in the shape of an eagle and contains the holy oil used during the anointing. The eagle's head dates from the 14th century and the body was made for the 1661 coronation. It is used along with the Anointing Spoon, a 12th-century item that is the only part of the medieval regalia to survive the interregnum.

During the coronation ceremony, five ceremonial swords are used although only one, the Jewelled Sword of Offering, is presented to the monarch. This sword dates to the coronation of George IV in 1820 and is decorated with diamonds, emeralds and rubies arranged in the shapes of the flowers of the United Kingdom: the rose, the thistle, and the shamrock. The other swords are the Sword of State, which is also carried during the State Opening of Parliament, the Sword of Temporal Justice, the Sword of Spiritual Justice, and the Sword of Mercy, also known as Curtana, which has a blunted point symbolising mercy.

The Armills are a pair of velvet-lined heavy gold bracelets which symbolise sincerity and wisdom. The armills used in the coronation of Elizabeth II were new, presented by the Governments of the Commonwealth. The spurs are also made of gold; they are presented to the sovereign during the coronation ceremony and then placed on the altar.

The Coronation Ring was made for William IV's coronation in 1831; it is a sapphire ring with a ruby cross. It has been used at the coronations of all subsequent male monarchs; a smaller version was made for Queen Victoria's coronation. There is also a ruby Consort's ring which is used during the coronation of the consort.
