Granted, he set off as a French agent, but as he had become familiar with the country he started respecting its people and customs and eventually he sacrificed his life for its independence.

KINGS AND PRINCES ARE THE SOLUTION OF THE LORD FOR MADAGASCAR: The Council of Kings and Princes of Madagascar, led by the Rev. Dr. Ndriana RABARIOELINA, Ph.D of Theology (USA), has declared to the Malagasy nation at the National Television of Madagascar (TVM) and the National Broadcasting of Madagascar (RNM) that the solution of the Lord about this political and economic crisis in the country is taking responsibility of all citizens, especially the Kings and Princes of Madagascar who are the real Raiamandreny (parents) of the nation for centuries. Indeed, the Great Island of Madagascar was one of the first nations of Africa and the Indian Ocean in the 19th century. In that time, the country was ahead of Japan before the Meiji era in the political, economic and military areas. After sixty-four years of French colonization (1896-1960), followed by an incompatible transplant of forty-nine years of Republican neo-colonial system (1960-2009) and a pseudo-transition which is not recognized by the international community (2009 -2011), with many leaders and politicians thinking only of their own interests before the interests of the nation, the people became hostage to politicians. The people no longer trust in politicians. There is a fast and illicit enrichment of officials and some families. The population is impoverished even more. The wealth of the country are sold off. Thus, the country is among the forty poorest nations of the world (HDI, UNDP 2010), and more than eighty percent of the population are poor and living on less than one $ USD per day. After the successive failures of incompetent and corrupt politicians, what is the solution? The Council of Kings and Princes of Madagascar has confirmed that the solution of the Lord to the political and economic crisis is not the african roadmap nor the current SADC proposals, but the Kings and Princes of Madagascar for the blessing of the nation, in accordance with the Word of Zanahary, YHWH, the Eternal Creator of the Universe. Finally, the establishment of a new constitution in line with our identity national and cultural values. In conclusion, here are the key messages of the Lord: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord YHWH! Happy the people he chose for his inheritance" (Psalm 33:12). "Blessed are you, O land whose king is a real noble ..." (Ecclesiastes 10:17). "Then the King will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule with righteousness." (Isaiah 32:1). In the name of Jesus Christ, King of Kings and Lord of lords (Rev. 19:6).

Indeed sad sad news, historical artifacts which are either stolen or lost, is such a huge blow for the morale.
Relics unifies country because of its symbolism.
I do hope Madagscar will become a constitutional monarchy. It deserves a gathering point and through years of colonization.
I support a monarchy in Madagascar.

The most sad news is that the Crown will appear in some private collection in Paris now. And we'll never see it again...

Inside info, of course. The police investigators are frustrated.

I do really hope the crown is stil in Madagascar. Does anyone know if it is true that anyone helping to find the crown will perceive a "ransom" of about 40000euros ? I really think historical items have always been important for a country. I suspect an anti-royal person. It's sad because what the thieft failed to understand is that this crown is above all "Royal thing", it's more about the history and the culture of Madagascar.

I agree, I hope it returns safe and sound. I too am against theft of historical relics, an example would be our danish "Golden Horns of Gallehus". They aren't royal, but the fact that they were from the age of vikings and historical. They were stolen in the 19th century and remoldten into gold coins by the thief who stole them. Thereby making them lost forever. The ones you can see today are copies from old sketches and drawing, still they aren't the real thing.
It's a bit offtopic, but I feel it clearly illustrates my point on this case.

Queen Ranavalona the Cruel (c. 1778-1861)
Badass of the Week: Ranavalona the Cruel
Queen Ranavalona I of Madagascar wasn't known by the warm-and-cuddly nickname "Ranavalona the Cruel" for nothing.
In fact, according to most of the (admittedly somewhat-unreliable) sources we have on this powerful African ruler, she generally tends to fall somewhere in the "Vlad the Impaler" quadrant of the spectrum between "benevolent dictator" and "bloodthirsty oppressive tyrant who would be more likely to jam a sharpened toothpick in your eye than grant you one sentence's worth of freedom of speech".
Ruling a country that's nowadays more known for delicious vanilla beans and delightfully-wacky dancing CGI Disney characters than it is for vicious public executions and coastlines adorned with severed heads mounted on spiked poles, this exceedingly-violent Queen carved out a gruesome, badass reputation that would have many people today referring to her as the " Female Caligula".

THE PALACE OF MANJAKAMIDANA, SYMBOLE OF SOVEREIGNTY, WILL REBORN AND WILL SHINE AGAIN !
Madagascar, Sacred Island, had already the independance and the sovereignty before the french colonization in 1896. And this country was more stronger than Japan before the era of Meiji.
In the 19th century AD, Madagascar was one of the greatest nations of the Indian Ocean and Africa, thanks to the Andriana Manjaka or Kings, non-corrupt, who put the interests of their nation above their personal interests. These Andriana Manjaka or kings have unified different clanic groups and tribes who were often in war. They are builders of kingdoms for centuries, and were concerned about safety, welfare, and the blessing of their nation. Thus, the Royal Palace of Manjakamiadana and the Rova of Antananarivo have become symbols of national unity and national sovereignty.
The Royal Palace of Manjakamiadana and the other royal palaces in the Royal Enclosure of Antananarivo, namely Besakana, Mahitsielafanjaka, Tranovola, Manampisoa, with the Fitomiandàlana or aligned Seven Royal Funerary, and the Tombs of Kings and Queens, located in the sacred and Royal Rova of Antananarivo, were burned in November 6, 1995.
The root cause of the arson back in 1642 when the French already wanted to acquire Madagascar. Then, the Berlin Conference in 1885 where fourteen Western countries have determined the partition of Africa and Madagascar. Because they wanted to destroy all traces of national independence, national sovereignty, national identity, cultural values, and indigenous theocratic and monarchic political system in the African continent and the Great Island, in order to sit better colonization and economic plunder.
Who burned the Royal Palace of Manjakamiadana? Sponsors and authors of this arson, with the essence of kerosene, were French Republican neo-colonialists, with the help of karana or Indo-Pakistanis, and especially the Mpamadika Tanindrazana or traitors of the nation.
Therefore, the Council of Kings and Princes of Madagascar declared to all nations: Cursed are those who ordered and those who participated, directly or indirectly to the arson of the Royal Palace of Manjakamiadana, other palaces and royal tombs, as well as the Royal Temple of Anatirova. And it is the same for all those who have made sacrilegious in the Royal Enclosure or Rova of Antananarivo, and who do not respect our royal and sacred customs and our cultural values, and all those who looted or plundered the riches of this Holy Land. The Council of Kings and Princes of Madagascar, under the conducting of the Prince Rev. Dr. Ndriana RABARIOELINA, confirms that there will be no respite for these criminals, and they will be prosecuted and convicted by the Courts, national or international, before long, and where they are.
In the opposite, they bless all those who respect Zanahary the Lord Creator of the Universe, our customs from the Bible, our country, and they strongly and warmly thank all those who participated in conservation of the unique treasures of our royal palaces and the preservation our environment.
Currently, we need the precious woods in Madagascar for the immediate reconstruction of all the royal palaces and cultural heritage of Madagascar. They should be banned from leaving the country. The Royal Palace of Manjakamiadana is being reborn, and it will shine again and before long, according to the Will of Zanahary, the Lord YHWH, and in respect to our royal and sacred customs, and our true cultural values, because the people of Madagascar, Tany Masina or sacred land, is called by the Lord Zanahary to be a Kingdom of Priests and a Holy Nation!
Finally, here are the strong messages of Zanahary the Lord Creator of the Universe:
"BLESSED is the NATION whose God is the LORD YHWH" (Psalm 33: 12). "YOU SHALL BE to Me a KINGDOM OF PRIESTS and a HOLY NATION" (Exodus 19: 6). "I WILL BLESS those who BLESS YOU, and I WILL CURSE those who CURSE YOU" (Genesis 12:3).
To Zanahary the Lord YHWH, the Creator of the Universe, alone, is the Glory,
And Peace on earth for all men and women who respect Madagascar Holy Land!
In the name of Jesus Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Palaces
Rova of Antananarivo
from Wikipedia
The Rova of Antananarivo is a royal palace complex in Madagascar that served as the home of the sovereigns of the Kingdom of Imerina in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the rulers of the Kingdom of Madagascar in the 19th century. Located in the central highland city of Antananarivo, the Rova occupies the highest point on Analamanga, formerly the highest of Antananarivo's many hills.
A fire on the night of 6 November 1995 destroyed or damaged all the structures within the Rova complex shortly before it was due to be inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Although officially declared an accident, rumours persist that politically motivated arson may have been the actual cause of the fire. The chapel and tombs, as well as Besakana and Mahitsielafanjaka, have since been fully restored with bilateral government donations, state funds and grants from intergovernmental and private donors. Completion of the reconstruction of the Manjakamiadana exterior is estimated for 2012, while interior restoration work will continue until at least 2013. Once the building is fully restored, Manjakamiadana will serve as a museum showcasing royal artefacts saved from destruction in the fire.
