From Kendra Spears to Princess Salwa Aga Khan | Mail Online

From supermodel to Princess Salwa Aga Khan:
Kendra married a millionaire prince - but hasn't given up the day job!

The Duchess of Cambridge's rise from commoner to world-famous Royal has been well documented but there's an intriguing new Princess on the block. American supermodel Kendra Spears, who is married to Prince Rahim Aga Khan, has a fairy-tale story to rival that of the former Kate Middleton. So what's the story of the Seattle college student-turned-Princess Salwa, who was pictured this week on a modelling shoot in Miami's South Beach?

The 25-year-old earned her title when she married Prince Rahim Aga Khan, 42, the eldest son of billionaire racehorse owner, His Highness Aga Khan IV, last September. Prince Rahim studied in the U.S. at Brown University and the Navarra Business School in Barcelona, Spain, is involved in the poverty reduction efforts of the Aga Khan Development Network. His father, the Aga Khan, a British national, is the 49th hereditary Imam of Ismaili Shi'as, and is regarded by his followers as a direct bloodline descendent of the prophet Mohamed.

After an engagement of only four months, Kendra and Prince Rahim exchanged vows at the Bellerive Castle in Geneva, Switzerland. The Seattle-born beauty, who was 24 at the time, wore a stunning ivory sari with gold embroidery to marry her husband in a traditional Muslim ceremony. The union of Kendra and Prince Rahim, reportedly worth around $800m, was the culmination of a fairytale story for the Seattle-born beauty, who rapidly rose to fame after winning an online modelling contest.

THE BEAUTIFUL BRIDES OF THE AGA KHAN

Miss Spears has married into a family with a long-established history of beautiful brides. Her husband's paternal grandfather Prince Aly Khan was famously married to Rita Hayworth.

Prince Rahim's British mother, Princess Salimah Aga Khan, was known as supermodel Sarah Croker-Poole before she wed, though she and the Aga Khan divorced in 1995, she continues to be known by her married name. The Aga Khan, 75, then married German former pop star Princess Gabrielle zu Leiningen née Gabriele Renate Homey in 1998, after which she took the name Inaara, though they separated in 2004. She remains the Begum Inaara Aga Khan until a formal divorce after which she will be known as Princess Inaara Aga Khan.

Prince Rahim follows in the footsteps of his younger brother, who also married an American model. Prince Hussain, 39, wed New York professor's daughter Kristin White in 2006 in a fairytale ceremony at a 14th century chateau outside of Paris. The bride converted to Islam and adopted the name Khaliya. The marriage appears to have been short-lived though as it was reported in 2011 that the pair - who have no children - had split.

The Aga Khan's daughter, Princess Zahra, 43, also had a failed marriage. She married British male model and farmer's son Mark Boyden in 1997 - and had two children, daughter Sara, and son Iliyan with him - but they divorced in 2005.

Divorce from Aga Khan

After 16 years of marriage the German Gabriele Inaara Begum Aga Khan and the Aga Khan IV, leader of the Ismailis, finally divorced. In friendship and mutual agreement! In the end, a happy ending after marathon divorce proceedings.

A joint statement issued by their lawyers states "The marriage of His Highness the Aga Khan and the Begum Inaara Aga Khan was ended through an amicable agreement after their divorce settlement from the Cour d' Appel (Court of Appeal ), Paris was confirmed.

Further details are confidential.

The former spouses are pleased with the amicable settlement, particularly in regard to their son, Prince Aly Aga Khan."

The divorce proceedings have dragged on for ten years. Earlier court judgements have been cancelled, such as the recent (2011) decision of the Court of Amiens which placed sole blame for the failure of the marriage on the Aga Khan and awarded the Begum 60 million euros. The Court of Appeal in Paris has annulled that decision and the final outcome of proceedings has been amicable.

Princess Inaara/Gabrielle has residences in Switzerland and Austria.

. . . . .

The next bit I'm not sure what it means to say.

German:
Gleichzeitig gab die frühere Begum offiziell bekannt, dass sie nach der erfolgten Scheidung ihren früheren Namen Prinzessin zu Leiningen wieder führt.

Google translator:
"At the same time the former Begum announced officially that they have their previous name Princess leads after the successful separation of Leiningen again."

I don't understand the significance of mentioning Leiningen unless she intends to revert to her previous married name of Princess Gabrielle zu Leiningen. The Aga Khan's first wife after the divorce became Princess Salimah Aga Khan or Begum Salimah; if this sets a precedent Gabrielle would be known as Princess Inaara Aga Khan or Begum Inaara, but maybe she prefers Princess zu Leiningen.

With best of my translating skills:
At the same time, the formerly named Begum officially announced that after the divorce is final, she will return to using her former name of Princes zu Leiningen.

That makes sense.

Aga Khan Divorces German Princess

The Aga Khan, spiritual leader to millions of Muslims, has finalized his divorce from a German princess after years of legal dispute.

Lawyers for the Aga Khan and his ex-wife, Gabriele Renate Inaara zu Leiningen, released a statement Friday saying their marriage "ends by consent" after the Paris Court of Appeals approved a divorce settlement. The lawyers said terms of the settlement are confidential. The two married in 1998 and had a son, and started divorce proceedings several years later.

French media have reported that the Aga Khan was initially ordered to pay 12 million euros ($16.7 million) in divorce proceedings, but a higher court upped that to 60 million euros.

His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, a billionaire philanthropist and magnate, is leader of Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims.

Their marriage has existed only in papers for ten years.

Like very beautiful brides, divorce is a nice tradition in this family.
Prince Amyn must be enjoying very much his status of "long-term bachelor".

The Aga Khan as chairman of the Aga Khan Foundation for Development received the 2013 North-South Prize of the Council of Europe during an official ceremony at the Senate Hall of the House of Parliament in Lisbon on June 12, 2014.

According to the Council of Europe website the North-South prize has been awarded yearly "since 1995 to two candidates who have stood out for their exceptional commitment to promoting North-South solidarity".

I hate to say that I don't think this marriage will last but I love them together in these photos.
The couple looks great indeed. Hopefully Prince Rahim has learnt something from the failed marriages of his father and his brother and will do his best to preserve the union.

Princess Salwa/Kendra Spears is pregnant.

Princess Kendra Salwa Spears and her husband Prince Rahim Aga Khan are expecting their first child.

American model Spears married Rahim in a fairytale ceremony in Geneva in September last year, after converting to Islam. Rahim is the son of His Highness Aga Khan IV, the spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. News of Spears' pregnancy was confirmed on the official Ismaili website today.

“Expressing his greatest happiness, Mawlana Hazar Imam [the Aga Khan] informed the Jamat [community] today that Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa are expecting their first child,” read a statement. “Around the world, Ismailis are gathering in Jamatkhanas to celebrate the happy news.”

Spears was touted as the 'next Cindy Crawford' at the start of her modelling career, thanks to a similar distinctive mole on her upper lip. After coming second in Ford Models' Supermodel of the World competition in 2008, she went on to appear on catwalks for Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton - to name but a few - and has starred in campaigns for Prada, Versace and Armani.
