On Friday, April 17, at the initiative of HM Queen, a virtual conference was held for a number of children's rights organizations on the occasion of the covid-19 pandemic.
Among the participants were both international and Swedish organizations and authorities, which are part of the network formed in connection with the 20th anniversary of the Children's Convention 2009.
The purpose of the virtual conference was to give the participants a comprehensive picture of what efforts are being made to meet the special needs of children and young people in the current circumstances.
The Queen opened the conference (from Stenhammar Castle):
“In the wake of the covid-19 pandemic, many children are exposed. I hope that today's meeting will give us a common picture of what is being done to support and protect these children - and perhaps also an idea of what needs to be done going forward.”
The conference was then led by Malin Dahlberg Markstedt from Rädda Barnen (Save the Children).
Participants submitted progress reports from their respective organizations and outlined the consequences that the pandemic has had, and risk having, for children and young people. Many highlighted isolation, financial turmoil and more unsupervised time on the internet as risk factors for violence, sexual abuse and mental and physical ill health. This is especially true in cases where schools and other social contexts are no longer available - which in itself has led to a noticeably increased need for support and assistance from non-profit actors.
All participants shared the picture that the risks are greatest for the children who are already living in social or economic vulnerability.
The Queen thanked the participants for valuable contributions to the conference and expressed the hope that the meeting could be a starting point for new collaborations.

The Queen writes today from Stenhammar Castle a letter to the elderly of Sweden, their relatives and staff in the elderly care. Here you can read the letter as a whole and print it.
The queen writes among other things:
In the pandemic that is now affecting the world, and which is changing so many lives, I think in particular of all of you elderly and dementia sufferers who are in an extra vulnerable position.
Similarly, with gratitude to all those working in the elderly care and dementia care, I think of taking care of our old people and helping them feel safe - sometimes under very demanding circumstances. Your efforts are invaluable.
From my own experience, I also know how challenging it can be as a relative of a person with dementia; how much worry and frustration one can feel. At present, your situation is perhaps more difficult than ever.
You are many who now have a hard time, and who deserve our appreciation and compassion. In this strained situation, I would like to send you my warmest regards.

"The virus knows no borders. And online perpetrators respect no borders. Therefore, we need to work together across borders. Making sure that the recommendations that have been developed are turned into concrete action is one very good way to start."
The webinar was the fourth in the series "Digital Cooperation during COVID19 and beyond" and was hosted by the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy and ITU (International Telecommunication Union).

The queen's whole speech, she started it
It is a true pleasure to join this digital conversation about a topic that is close to my heart. Online meetings are still fairly new to me, but I am quickly getting adjusted to new ways of handling life – as we all are in these unusual times.
