I can imagine that carving out her niche abroad rather than at home is connected to her (or the Royal Court’s…) wish not to diminish her husband’s standing by comparison.
Might be, that this is part of her decisions.
But such noble attitude as only reason? You have seen the dresses, her hanging out with the who-is-who of the German and US-American society.
Surely hub might be in her mind, surely the poor children, she is helping also, but only that...naaaa

Oh, I'm perfectly sure that besides all honorable motives and real achievements in her humanitarian work, Queen Silvia does not only love the glitz & glam but has always been a very ambitious lady too...
...and needs an outlet for this kind of personality. Just traveling around Swedish provinces in tradional costume garb won't always do.

Boris your point is well taken. I remember just after the old King died and CG ascended to the throne, there were rumblings about abolishing the monarchy and do away with their "playboy king" Then Silvia came and it was touted that she "saved the monarchy." It makes absolute sense to me at least that now that CG is more or less an "elderly statesman" and Victoria is coming up, Silvia fades a bit in the background to make room for the next generation.
Still deep down I am sure she takes great pride in what she accomplished during the last 32 years, especially since she was neither born nor raised to become a Queen.

Great find, ursulajohanna - also because it can be seen that Queen Silvia wore yet another new black evening dress in Brazil.
I have no idea either what the occasion was - it's not from the dinner Brazilian charity lady Lily Morinha gave in honor of the Queen - but maybe it's from another event Silvia was scheduled to attend near the end of her trip: An award presentation of the charity 'Abrinq Foundation'. No pics from it have surfaced so far.

Magazine DAM had an article with pic from birthday celebration Aje Philipson:

http://www.ritva.com/public/tid6679j.jpg

Last weeks the press wrote, that the royal couple don't attend the celebration. But now we see a (little) pic of there!
Do you see more and better pics of the royal couple by the celebration?

Not sure about the picture in Svensk Dam Tidning, but the Royal Couple did attend the birthday party, so the press indeed made yet another story up.
Link to one more pic - you have to type in 'drottning silvia', then it's the first one from the left, top row:

During her visit to Brazil attending the ‘Third world congress about sexual exploitation of children’, Queen Silvia gave an exclusive interview to Swedish TV channel TV4 which aired on Sunday and is now online.
She talks about her involvement in the issue, her World Childhood Foundation, how she spoke to the Brazilian President Lula during his state visit to Sweden last year about hosting this congress in his country, about ‘Netclean’, a computer program fighting the download of illegal porn, and mentions how proud she is of Princess Madeleine having joined her at her charity.

An interview with Queen Silvia was just shown on Dutch programme RTL boulevard. She talks abotu child abuse, the dangers of internet for children etc. The presenter emphasized how active the Queen is in this field and how important her role is. He also ended with a plea that any of our Dutch royals would get involved in causes like this, which is much closer to people's hearts than let's say microcredits and toilet summits...

Woho, do I smell some sort of criticism in the Royal-wise (!) criticism free dutch media

I don´t agree actually. A society, which is struggling with serious financial and environmental issues will also produce more victims of child abuse (in all kind of forms)

Was it the same video material Boris had posted above btw?

Very weird, that Victoria wasn´t present. She always (?) was in the past years.
And considering the importance of the Royal Swedish Academy, she should have been there.
So now she has a whole month off. Busy bee...not
