King Carl XVI Gustaf's 70th Birthday Celebrations: April 25-30, 2016

Zapping by I see the changing of the guard is coming up, so let's have a brief look at uniforms.

These soldiers are dragoons, light dragoons to be exact and as such the are armed with carbines, Mausers.
Being light dragoons they are issued with sabres and not the heavier pallask, i.e. a straight, single-edged sword.
Dragoons were initially mounted infantry, or rather rapid-deployment-forces armed with full length muskets. Later on they evolved into all-purpose cavalry and later on to light and heavy dragoons. So light dragoons are all-purpose lighter cavalry.

The uniforms are directly inspired by 1800's Prussian uniforms.

The soldiers in dark uniforms are infantry of the line and armed with Mauser rifles. They are also inspired by 1800's Prussian uniforms.

There are four Swedish guards units. Can't remember the names off hand, but they are: light dragoons, infantry of the line, grenadiers and cuirassiers.

I think I just spotted the danish crown prince couple in the royal crowd. They must have just arrived from Denmark. Busy days for them!

I also see Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands and Prince Hassan of Jordan.

Prince Andreas of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha is also there. And Princess Märtha Louise and Ari.

I have seen the courtyard pictures and I see only Victoria, Daniel & Estelle hanging out with the rest of the royals. Why isn't the rest of the SRF with them?

It was only a short moment, and then the royal family went to stand at a row for the ceremonies. Besides, the photographers have a hurry to load photos, we may get more photos of that mingle with royals later.

I saw Crown Princess Mary taking a photo from Victoria, Frederik and little Oscar. I wonder if Frederik will be Oscar's godfather?

Everybody looks lovely. Awesome to see everyone on the livestream. Pity except for Filip and Mathilde, Frederik and Mary, no other younger royals are attending.

If I see right Charlène is again not present ???

SVT's Royal expert Roger Lundgren just said at SVT, that at the banquet tiaras can be worn, so maybe we will see tiaras after all. Swedish etiquette expert Magdalena Ribbing also said on this week's Svensk Damtidning, that during the last few years it has become acceptable to wear tiaras with black tie.

Tiaras CAN be worn tonight according to Roger Lundgren even though it is a black tie dinner ;)

That's what the invitation card stated so there may be some sparkle after all ;)

"Tiara må bäras". It's tricky to understand - even in swedish - if that means that you are allowed to wear tiaras, or if you should wear it.

I believe it is never required to wear a tiara, even in a white tie dinner (which is not even the case tonight), so the statement should be interpreted as "you are allowed" rather than "you should". Having said that, if a tiara is optional, I am pretty sure the royal ladies will choose to wear it (as in W-A's pre-inauguration black tie dinner at the Rijksmuseum).

The Princess did attend the wedding of Princess Madeleine and Mr O'Neill, the Prince remained in Monte-Carlo. Now the Prince attends the 70th birthday of King Carl XVI Gustaf, the Princess remains in Monte-Carlo. But there is no crisis or something. Last Sunday both the Prince and Princess were at the Monte-Carlo Country Club in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin to see Rafael Nadal winning this year's tennis tournament: picture

It means that you are allowed to wear a tiara but you don't have to.
A typical international black tie dress code.

But in Sweden this is something new as the swedish royal ladies never wear a tiara with black tie at Events in Sweden. They have done it only for some Events abroad. At the return dinner at the State Visit from Luxembourg Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Adelaide tiara on arrival. But she removed it at some pint and went tiaraless through the rest of the evening because the swedsih royal ladies didn't wear tiaras.

I watched almost the whole celebrations and it was a lovely morning. It wa salso heartwarming to see the family ghathered on the balcon together, and I'm looking forward for the banquet.

The only let down was the abscence of Princess Madelein's children. it would have beeen great to see two more royals toddlers running around Estelle. I got to see Oscar eventually and I fully enjoyed that moment.
