King Carl XVI Gustaf's 70th Birthday Celebrations: April 25-30, 2016

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I'm really not impressed by the plates and glasses.
If I'm not wrong, Maxima and WA, did not attend. Not the Norway royal or cp couple.
The Spanish Royal couple did not attend the diner ? And no-one from the British Rf was there.
And no-one from the Greek Rf either. I think they are related through the Queen Anne-Marie

:previous: Bea was sent for the Dutch so they were well represented. This was a private birthday party. Not odd they sent CG's contemporary.

The Norweigans were scheduled to come but had to back out the last minute. There was a helicopter crash on Friday killing 13 people, and the king made the decision to only send Ari and Martha Louise.

King JC and Sofia were there for some events. They opted not to stay for the banquet. Nothing odd, often happens at these multi occasion events.

The Brits often miss events on the continent so I am not shocked.

The Greeks do surprise me. They tend to attend many of these events, and yes through Ingrid, Anne-Marie is of course related.

Only the King and the Queen of the Belgians, Queen Margarethe II ,Prince Albert II of Monaco and the Presidents of Finland and Iceland .
Not a lot of important attendance .

Anne-Marie is Carl Gustaf's first cousin just like her sisters, who were both present at the gala dinner.

Am I missing something :ermm: I said in my post she was related through her mother Queen Ingrid. Is there a closer relation you are trying to point out??

My surprise was that they were NOT there. The Greek royals usually attend the big royal events.

It was a private family event, not a big official state occasion. There was representation from most of the major European houses (Lichtenstein, Britain and Greece and Lux are the big missing). We had the former king and queen of Spain, the former queen of the Netherlands, the Norweigan king/queen/cp couple were scheduled to attend until the helicopter crash and they were still represented. There were even Japanese royals.

Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein attended.

I am pretty sure that, if it were not for the helicopter crash, the King and Queen of Norway would be present as they normally attend events of fellow Scandinavian monarchies.

The biggest surprise to me was the absence of the King and Queen of the Netherlands. The King of Spain is probably refraining from leaving the country before fresh elections are called, which is scheduled to happen next Tuesday, if I am not mistaken.

Thanks again for pointing out (like Ingrid) something I directly mentioned in my post:flowers: The Norweigans were indeed on the guest list and confirmed to attend (both the crown prince couple and the king/queen). They pulled out Friday after the crash.

Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein attended.

Thanks, I didn't see them mentioned nor have I noticed any pics of them :flowers:

Here are photos of the Liechtenstein couple at Te Deum and gala.

There were glimpses of them at the courtyard event behind Norway's Princess ML and Denmark's CP couple.

Thanks:flowers: I even saw her in the group pic and couldn't think of who it was. Its been a while since I have seen the couple. Her tiara is quite similar to the fringe tiara Victoria wears often.

There are definitely some tiaras within the Bu RF. Margarita herself wore a huge one at her wedding, once owned by Simeons mother.

The massive tiara hasn't been since 1957. Some speculate it was broken down or sold.

But there are a few tiaras. Her daughter in laws wear tiaras at events

Isn't the former King and Queen of Spain and the former Queen of Netherlands "important guests" ?
They ruled their countries for many years and are close private friends of Carl Gustaf and Silvia so for a birthday party they are very important guests.

I heard there were school holiday in NL (?) so W-A, Maxima and the girls may be abroad on holiday ?

As there is a government crisis in Spain it wouldn't look good if the King left the country for a birthday party in Sweden when he recently cancelled a state visit to UK.

The Greek RF was celebrating the ortodox easter and couldn't attend. If it had been next week, QA-M would probably have attended with her sisters.

Wouldn't be surprised if the British Royal Family wasn't even invited. Why on earth invite people who always says no ?

Btw i thought it was nice to see the President of the Republic of Finland escort the Queen of Sweden to the banquet yesterday.

I am pretty sure an invitation was sent. to the British royal family. It is really disappointing that Charles and Camilla didn't attend; they are almost the same age as Carl Gustaf and seem to get along well with the Swedish royal family, whom they visited on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth's diamond jubilee.

The Queen rarely sends her heirs to these events. She usually send Edward and Sophie. My guess they were too busy to attend. I think Charles and Camilla or the Cambridge's should be attending these events.

Charles actually attended Willem-Alexander's, Philippe's and Felipe's weddings, and he was also present at the funeral of Prince Claus. I also read once that he was supposed to attend Victoria's wedding, but couldn't make it.

The wedding of the heir to the throne is a state occasion. A birthday party, even that of the king, is not. And even state events like the wedding of Albert and Charlene, and Guillaume and Stephanie, Edward was sent instead. If anyone would have gone, it would have been the Wessexes for a private dinner.

If everyone is ending their heirs, then the British should be doing the same.

Thank you for sharing those LadyFinn. Can you give a translation (or brief overview in English) of Carl Gustaf's speech? I get the impression that he was thanking the people of Stockholm for their performances, but it would be interesting to hear more details.

The king started his speech with "Dear people of Stockholm, dear friends!" He thanked all that had came there and made the day. Not only for him but to all his guests who had come from abroad. The king said that "it is great to be able to show Stockholm at its best. All of you, who have come here, it is you who make it, you make Stockholm. Congratulations. And above all, just today, this fantastic choir below me. You are very skilled. But I have observed something – that there are almost only women there in your choir, and I begin to understand why". (The swedish royal experts were wondering what the king meant with this). The king thanked warmly for the homage and wished everyone a nice continuing Walpurgis night.

Several monsrchies sent the predecessor of the current monarch, that would've been a bit difficult for the Brits
I don't think there were many heirs at this party, apart from the Scandinavian fanilies, but they are personally close, so you can't compare that imo

They were lovely bday celebrations and as a royal watcher I was very grateful that we got tons of pictures and broadcasts from the celebrations. :flowers:

Sending the former monarch is about the level of sending the heir. In the case of the Netherlands and Spain, sending the heir is nearly impossible, not as impossible as sending the Queen Mum from the UK but still :) I don't think they are about to send CA or Leonor to anything until eighteen.

The UK is not alone in not sending the heir to events. Japan sent Princess Takamodo, the widow of the emperor's cousin. Princess Sirindhorn is often sent by Thailand, like Edward, a younger child of the monarch.

According to Roger Lundgren, who has written a book about queen Silvia, is the editor-in-chief of Kungliga magasinet and the royal expert of SVT, princess Takamado is queen Silvia's close friend.

Business owners in Sweden had the opportunity to offer their congratulations to The King in connection with his 70th birthday via participating in a fundraising effort for the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. The purpose of raising the funds is that the gift will be made available to the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, for the purpose of financing the equipping of the new teaching and research facilities that are presently under construction.
By Thursday the fundraising had collected over SEK 4,8 million.

She has even send her husband to similar Events like the 50th birthday of Carl Gustaf asnd the 60th birthday of Queen Margrethe. He was apparently also to attne dher 70th birthday but could not because of the vulcano ash at that time. And to Queen Beatric 60th birthday she send Pricne Charles.

Yes, April 27th is King's Day, May 4th is Remembrance Day and May 5th is Liberation Day but this year it is also Ascension Day. National Holidays. With so many free days, the schools and many Dutch plan their Spring Break in this period.

As the King has public duties on these days, the only possibility to enjoy free time with his daughters is exactly between 27 April and 4 May and the King of Sweden's birthday felt unluckily in the middle of that period.
