I believe that a love of scouting has descended through several generations of the Swedish Royal Family. Arthur, Duke of Connaught, who was one of Lord Baden Powell's great friends and admirers, was interested in the scouting movement from its inception. His daughter Margaret was of course Crown Princess of Sweden before her premature death. Her sons became involved in scouting.

King visited the scouts' world headquarters of the World Scout Bureau, where meetings and seminars were held.
On Saturday the king will be in the city of Tacloban, Philippines. The city was severely affected by Typhoon Haiyan 8 November 2013. In January 2014 King visited the city along with the World Scout Foundation to take part in the community activities the scouts made in connection with rescue work and rebuilding of the city.

Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf: “Make scouting a family affair”
It is in scouting where family members could best invest their bonding time, according to King Carl Gustaf XVI of Sweden who arrived in this city yesterday.
King Gustaf, a chief scout and top contributor to the World Scout Foundation and Messenger of Peace, told reporters, during a conference at the DZR Airport VIP Lounge upon his arrival, about his love for scouting that started during his childhood days, as his parents were also active scouts.
“Scouting is my family’s affair,” and the main reason for his passion and commitment to help the organization, said the visiting king. “We want to help young girls and boys develop their skills especially during disasters.”
King Gustaf visited this city to inspect personally and partially assess the assistance he had extended for the construction of the Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Scouting Training Center, as well as livelihood of parents of Boy Scouts who were affected by super typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

“I’m glad to be back to Tacloban after nearly two years. I’m happy to see the tremendous changes,” the King told reporters in a short press briefing at the airport.
During his first visit in January 2014, the King has pledged to donate funds for post-Yolanda recovery in Leyte province, including the rehabilitation of the BSP Leyte building in this city that was devastated by the 2013 catastrophe. The cost of reconstruction is P7 million.
“The building is intended not only to train scouts to become good citizens, but to prepare them for future disaster,” the King added.
He checked the ongoing rehabilitation of the BSP building, which is up for completion in February 2016. During his six-hour visit, the King met some local BSP and government officials led by Leyte Gov. Leopoldo Dominico Petilla. He also made a short visit to the shipwreck located in Anibong district that has been converted into a memorial park.

The king asked that this visit be kept private except for a 30-minute press briefing at the Daniel Z. Romualdez airport on his arrival after 9 a.m. on Saturday morning on a private plane.
He said he wanted to check on the progress of the construction of a two-story Boy Scouts of the Philippines-Leyte Council building. The building will not only be used for boy scout activities but also during times of disaster.
During the briefing, the King stressed the importance of teaching the young the value of protecting the environment. (The) scout movement is one of the world’s oldest environmental movements; we help educate people on climate change, he said. After the briefing, Gustaf unveiled a marker on the new boy scout building which will be completed next year. The King, who is honorary chair of the World Scout Foundation, donated P7 million toward the building construction.
He also met with the parents of the boy scouts who were beneficiaries of a livelihood project he had sponsored. The families were given carabaos and sari-sari stores.

It was an exciting Friday for the 1st Caroline Springs Scouts Group, which hosted royalty to celebrate the commencement of works on its new activity centre
World Scout Foundation chairman His Majesty King Carl the sixteenth Gustaf of Sweden was on hand when the sod was turned for a $100 million regional Scout Adventure Activity Centre at the Burnside Recreation Reserve. The centre will be the new home for 1st Caroline Springs Scouts Group’s 150 members.
The King heard of the Scouts grand plans for the western suburbs, and planted a birch sapling in the hopes it will “grow as the Caroline Springs Scout Group grows”.
King Carl also visited the Catholic Regional College Sydenham campus where he lunched with student leaders in the school’s restaurant, which is used for hospitality training.

Massive day!
It started with the launch of the hall project for 1st Caroline Springs, with the most magnificent investiture of a Joey scout with the Secretary General of WOSM presenting the world badge, Chief Commissioner of Australia presenting the Scouts Australia Badge before His Majesty and I shared the honour of shaking our newest members hand and presenting her new membership certificate. Oh and the investiture was in Auslan as this Joey Scout has cochlear implants so the Joey Mob had to learn the promise using sign language.

Viasat interiewed the king:
- I've been here for three days and spent time with the scouts to see how they build their business. It has been a very positive spirit.
The king has been involved in Scouting in different ways since the age of four and is today among other honorary chairman of the World Scout Foundation.
- He has over the years raised over $ 100 million to our operations worldwide. In this way he is totally unique, said John Geoghegan, director of the World Scout Foundation.
But when the king is still in Australia, he was also able to attend at another of his interests: Sport cars.
- I think you can combine the two interests. There will be a number of youth from Scouts here today showing things up and have a nice time.
The king thinks it is great that there is now Swedish interest in Formula 1 scene.
- Marcus has been in F1 for a few years and it's fun. As we know, it's tough competition, but you learn every year and have to be lucky, have good cars and good teams. And one gets safer with everything over the years, so it will be exciting to follow him. We have many other talented young people in other classes, I try to follow. It is just some years to go until we find some new guys, I promise.

Garry Rogers Motorsport welcomed a very special guest on Sunday at the Australian Grand Prix with the King of Sweden popping into the garage for a visit.
Visiting Melbourne in his role as Chairman of the World Scout Foundation, His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden toured the Volvo garage with some Scouts, watched Sunday’s V8 Supercars race with the team and impressed Rogers with his knowledge of the sport.
“He had a headset, he was listening in and he knows a little bit about it actually, he is quite well informed on our Supercar business,” Rogers told v8supercars.com.
“He certainly surprised me with his knowledge of it and he absolutely loved them. It was very, very good.”
“He wasn’t specifically here for the grand prix but when he found out it was on he came out … there were close to 80 or 90 scouts there. They all met outside the garage, all the scouts came in and surrounded the car, spoke to the King, the King spoke to them. He was he was very open, such a normal, lovely person … like I say, his knowledge of motorsport and in particular V8 Supercars – he really follows it, he really liked it, it was very good for our brand.”
