King: "Tremendously fine work you all have done"

The three day visit to tsunami-struck Thailand is over for the Royal Couple. It contained many meetings with people who worked in the first chaotic weeks after the tidal wave disaster. On Saturday, Swedes who live in Thailand received the thanks of the King and Queen. For example, they met people in the garden of the Swedish Church in Bangkok.

-We have tried to meet as many people as possible said the King during a conference with the media. It is one extraordinary job that everybody has done together. It has been fascinating to see what can all be done here when things really count.

Hospital and Fishing Village

The Royal Couple also visited a Samaritan hospital which is the hospital in Bangkok where the most severely hurt Swedes were located. 109 Swedes were treated there but many of them have since left. Many impressions have been made on the trip especially on Friday when the Royal Couple visited the tsunami-ravaged areas of southwest Thailand. They visited a completely destroyed fishing village, a camp for the homeless, saw the devastated beaches in Khao Lak, and they are now staying at a hotel where they will hear all about the work to identify those who have died.

For Queen Silvia there was a small ceremony at the Blue Village in Khao Lak, the area that affected her the most on this journey. When the tsunami came, 250 Swedes were at the hotel, none have been found alive.

-It was an incredibly moving ceremony and it was appropiately so for such a place for so many Swedes have lost their lives here said Queen Silvia.

Also, the King saw the catastrophic results of the tsunami and made the purpose of the visit to thank the many Thais for their help to the Swedish people during this disaster. Among the Thai people, there is a special relationship with their own Royal House and the Royal Couple´s visit brought attention and appreciation to the Royal House as well.

This appreciation of royalty in Thailand was also shown by the fishermen in Ban Nam Khem, north of Khao Lak, where the King presented a gift of 1 million kronor. The money will go to buy 100 boats for the fishermen. They also received the same amount of money which friends of the King had collected.
