On April 26th is the King's anniversary day. Then he beats 14th century king Magnus Eriksson's old record and becomes the Swedish regent who has been the longest time on the throne. The king has then been on the throne for 44 years and 223 days, one day longer than Magnus Eriksson. The director of the press department Margareta Thorgren told this at a press conference held on Thursday at the Royal Palace.
- But there will be no special celebration. The king is likely to be on an airplane on that day, said Margareta Thorgren.

The king and queen broke off their trip to Klosters and returned to Sweden when Madeleine gave birth to Adrianne, they had planned to be in Klosters until 16th March. But on Tuesday they sat on a plane back to Switzerland and are expected to come home this weekend.
- The king loves to go skiing. He wanted to return, tells a person in the family's vicinity.
The director of the press department Margareta Thorgren:
- It's a private trip and because of that nothing the court comments .
The royal couple traveled to Switzerland and returned some days later. And now the same. How do you think about the environment?
- This private trip has been planned for a long time. At the same time, a birth is difficult to plan in detail, and with the official parts, the Council of State and Te Deum, for example, the royal couple had to break their trip and go home.
- The court has a thought of sustainability in everything, even when it comes to travel. In this case, the royal couple has returned to Switzerland with regular flight and they are expected to return this weekend.

I see that the debate on the environmental impact of flying has reached the royals as well.

Today king Carl XVI Gustaf beats 14th century king Magnus Eriksson's old record and becomes the Swedish regent who has been the longest time on the throne. The king has today been on the throne for 44 years and 223 days, one day longer than Magnus Eriksson.

When the king and Victoria attended at National Archives' 400th anniversary celebration last week, they were shown an exhibition. The letter is the first original evidence about King Albrekt of Mecklenburg to succeed King Magnus Eriksson. With the help of this document, the National Archives has been able to determine Magnus Eriksson's reign for 44 years and 222 days. On April 26, 2018, King Carl XVI Gustaf has been Sweden's King for 44 years and 223 days. He then becomes the king who ruled Sweden the longest through history.

The king has no plans to end in his job, he tells when the Expressen met him in the Japanese city Kamakura after three days official visit to Japan.
- Obviously, I've been with everything a very long time. It's because of the health and when you're feeling good and so it is fun to work on, says the king.
How do you celebrate such a record?
- Celebrating? We do not do that at all, says the king with a laugh.
- We are well on the airplane back home to Sweden. It's not something I've been thinking about so very seriously. I think it's better to live in the present and onwards.
At the same time, the king thinks it is important to stop and reflect. He does it himself and realizes that the trip he just finished - to Japan where he is representing Sweden - is what drives him.
- Now we are here and represent Sweden in Japan. It's only three days of all the others during the year. But it feels very fun to be able to work for Sweden in many places in the world, but also in Sweden. Then you become a bit humble that so many years have passed by.
The king tells him that he can sometimes browse photo albums or watch old movie clips from the beginning of his reigning season.
- In fact, you have dome enormous amounts and experienced enormously exciting things. And you should be humble and grateful for that.

Dagny tells that she spends her birthday more or less by herself. But next week she will celebrate properly in Hungary. She and her nieces and nephews go to Budapest, she gets the trip as a birthday present. Dagny loves Budapest with the Danube river and everything. Dagny says also that often hears about her age and can not understand why people think it's so remarkable. There are 30-year-olds who are worse than her. Dagny is a miracle for doctors. She doesn't have to use any medicine at all.

It is nice that the king and queen invited a private citizen to Solliden. I wonder if she has told about her memories of the royal family history. She is old enough to remember when Lennart, Sigvard, Carl junior and Carl Johan renounced the throne, for instance.

Finnish family magazine Apu published this week a special issue of royals.

The magazine tells also how finnish president Urho Kekkonen (born 1900) was a kind of mentor to king Carl Gustaf. King Carl Gustaf was nine years old when Kekkonen became president, and Kekkonen resigned from his work in January 1982.

The mentor of the king
The pension aged finnish president took the swedish crown prince under his wing.
King Carl Gustaf reminisced president Kekkonen at an interview he gave due to Finland's 100th anniversary last year. He said that Kekkonen visited Sweden often, also at the family events, both in happy and sad ones. He became a positive figure to them, and they called him uncle Kekkonen. It wasn't a president who came to visit, but uncle Kekkonen.
King Carl Gustaf met president Kekkonen many times. In 1970 the 24-year-old crown prince came to Lapland to ice fish with the 70-year-old president. Carl Gustaf had a cast in his arm and too thin clothes, but after the ice fishing they were photographed cosily baking thin pancakes on slow-burning log fire.
In 1974 king Carl Gustaf came to Finland to his first state visit. He was welcomed by the friendly president, whose good relationship with Russia made a big impact to the young king during time which was characterized with the cold war. King Carl Gustaf said that president Kekkonen had unbelievably good relations with Kremlin and also Sweden benefited of them.
Kari Lumikero, a longtime finnish correspondent in Sweden, says that in addition to that king Carl Gustaf liked president Kekkonen very much, during their joint hunting and fishing trips he assumed a kind of godfather role to Finland. And that role he has kept all these years.

While it continues to be common for European royals from different countries to serve as mentors for one another, close relationships with foreign presidents are less typical. I find it a bit surprising in light of the changes to the constitution in 1975.

The Swedish singer Barbro Svensson writes in her memoir about a party in Helsingfors during the State Visit of 1975 and how The King told her about his admiration both for President Kekkonen and how he handled his job. She also wrote about Kekkonen's cheeky jokes and how he was very helpful in helping her wipe up some champagne that she'd spilt on her chest. Very helpful.

President Kekkonen was a friend of the swedish royal family, so it isn't so strange that he and Carl Gustaf had a great relatioship despite of their big age difference.

Here is a couple of videos of crown prince and king Carl Gustaf with president Urho Kekkonen in Finland. The first video is from 1975, when Carl Gustaf was hunting pheasants with the president in Janakkala. The second one is from the fishing trip in 1970, which I wrote in my previous post. We can see that president Kekkonen had a fur hat and was perhaps a little better dressed for the cold weather than Carl Gustaf.

Brrr while I'm sure the gift was well intentioned my bet is that it's kept at the back of a kitchen cupboard at Drottningholm. You know, where we all keep those gifts we get from aunts at graduations and on our 30th birthday.

The King's statement due to forest fires
On Tuesday, July 17, the King gave the following statement regarding forest fires throughout Sweden.
"My family and I are worried about the evolution of events around the large number of fires that ravage around our country this unusually hot and dry summer.
At the moment, a lot of work is being done to fight the fires and minimize their damage.
I want to express my and the royal family's support for all of you who are affected by the fires.
To all the people - rescue personnel, staff of the Armed Forces and Home Guard and volunteers - who in this strained situation make great sacrifices to help others, I and my family want to say: thank you. Your commitment and your efforts are invaluable."

The king will be hunting elks next week.

In parts of Skinnskatteberg and Köpings municipalities, the elk hunting is cancelled this year. The reason is that there are too few elks, which according to the Hunters Association in Västmanland is because the wolf's stem in the area is too dense. Therefore, in the elk-care area of Köping-Berg, and in the Skinnskatteberg-Riddarhyttan elk care area, it has been decided not to hunt elks this year.
Just a few miles away, in Sveaskog's ekopark Malingsbo-Kloten in Bergslagen, the annual royal elk hunt is planned as usual, over 100 people will take part.
- It actually looks a bit better than last year so this year the elk hunt is done as usual, says Jimmy Pettersson, who is the leader of the shoot at the king's hunt.
Otto Ramel is the court forester and plans the King's hunt. The royal hunt will start next week and the plan is to shoot 15 animals.
- The area where the King chases is very large, 20,000 hectares, and there are quite a lot of elk. We take four drives in the area, he says.
Traditionally, the King is hosting the event that engages around 100 people. In addition to members of the royal family and invited guests, the company consists of about 50 beaters, leaders of the shoot and kitchen staff.

In two months time Queen Silvia will turn 75. Her 70th birthday was celebrated in grand style, for being Silvia. I wonder if her 75th birthday will be marked someway different from how it's usually done. So far I have found none information or seen any speculations about it.

Thanks a lot, I have missed that, even though it says very little about what the celebrations could be. But I hope she is right, and the day will be celebrated.

Svensk Damtidning told, that after their visit in UN king Carl Gustaf flew back to Sweden, but queen Silvia has a holiday and she went to see Madeleine.

Queen Silvia has had two hectic weeks with several trips on schedule. Now the queen chooses to have a little deserved holiday - and that for Madeleine's sake.
- The king travels home to Stockholm, but the queen will be privately elsewhere, said Margaret Thorgren to Svensk Damtidning.
Is it true that she will visit the Princess Madeleine and her family in Florida?
