On May 31st, GD Maria Teresa met with 15 year old Assiatou, a survivor from Boko Haram terrorists. Assiatou was 14 when she was kidnapped, forced into marriage, raped and then escaped after 45 days. She has written a book "Enlevée par Boko Haram, Assiatou" with a journalist from L'Humanité about her ordeal and to draw attention to the still missing girls in Nigeria. GD Maria Teresa first met Assiatou at a UNESCO conference.

Constitutional reform was discussed on July 6th to bring more legal clarity between Parliament, Government, and Head of State. The amendments are expected to be finalized for a referendum in 2018. The Grand Duke’s inviolability remains intact and he "will continue to play more of a symbolic role in the constitution. It should be clarified that it has no political powers."

Volksfreund’s article seems more gossipy although it has more information:
  • The current constitution, despite being amended 37 times, is basically a copy of the Belgian Constitution
  • "The role of the Chamber of Deputies is enhanced"
  • The Grand Duke as head of state is reduced to a symbol of unity and "should not be allowed to dissolve parliament"
  • Reputation of the GDF has suffered
  • The many Nassau royals is a costly affair
  • Family disputes don’t belong in public

how very exciting. i am looking forward to reading the book.

On September 1st, GD Henri and GD Maria Teresa attended a reception for "Meet Luxembourg 2016" at the Grand Ducal Palace.
Most of the "Meet Luxembourg 2016" event happens at the European Convention Center Luxembourg (ECCL) in Kirchberg from Sep. 1-3, and aims to promote Luxembourg as an ideal destination for business tourism MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Events).

Grumbles about GD Henri's upcoming attendance at the informal meeting of German-speaking countries.

"Given the historical weight of two world wars and mistrust maintained for a long time vis-à-vis the German origins of the House of Nassau, such a step seemed unthinkable just a few years. Especially since the 1984 Law on the use of languages is not a German-Luxembourg State. It is therefore surprising that the difficult decision to join the German heads of state was taken in 2014 without consultation within the government," writes Lëtzebuerger Land. It notes that "the Grand Duke, however, tends to shun the Francophone Summit which takes place every two years."

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel responded "there's nothing to invoke Article 45 of the Constitution," which states that "the provisions of the Grand Duke must be countersigned by a member of responsible government." and that an "informal meeting does not bind Luxembourg politically." GD Henri informed the PM about going each time and PM Bettel doesn't see anything wrong with this approach.

Gouvernement : une reprise presque symbolique

I'm puzzled. I've read the GDF has been criticized for being too Francophone so wouldn't GD Henri's attendance at a German focused event be a good thing? There certainly isn't going to be a gathering of Lëtzebuergesch countries...

:previous:
I am also puzzled, given that the Grand Duke attended the meeting in 2014 and 2015, and it is surprising to me that Luxembourg is allegedly anti-German more than 70 years after World War Two.

Maybe it was slow news day? :whistling:

On September 6th, GD Henri and Mr. Claude Meisch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth, had an audience with deserving students leaving classic and technical secondary education.
