I can't quite give you any concrete information about Queen Paola but here is some gossip I found out recently from the Benelux Royals message board. Apparently Queen Paola was quite the ladies man back in the day and had numerous affairs. (She was also known as la dolce Paola.) At some point it was believed that Prince Laurent wasn't even King Albert's son but the result of an affair of Queen Paola's!
How's that for some tid bit of info on the beautiful queen!
Who knows? King Albert does admit to having a grown daughter born out of wedlock, after he married Queen Paola. I wonder why the crown was suppose to go directly to Prince Philippe and bypass his father, and why that changed?
King Albert got the crown because upon the death of his brother, in 1993, there was a lot of tensions regarding the language and cultural differences in Belgium. There was tension among the French-speaking and Dutch-speaking groups and the government felt the country need a "more experienced" leader to become the King.
I didn't know that they both had affairs though....
