The representative of King Albert II. attends the funeral ceremony of 7-year-old Stacy Lemmens, Monday 03 July 2006 at the Sainte-Foy church in Liege. (anp)

I am struggling with an annotation to this picture. Wish it didn’t exist - like all the other images of all these wreaths they had to send lately. This is for sure one of the most painful royal duties.

What remains is total consternation.

Meanwhile on the Flemish coast… Queen Paola is visting 2006 Beaufort. (anp)

And what's it all about? 2006 Beaufort is a triennial art event on the Flemish Coast. Between April 1st and October 1st 2006 the Flemish coast is the setting for a magnificent art trail. Visual artists from all over the world leave their mark on ten coastal towns and you can discover various works of art along the coast (including the beach). The spider sculpture, for instance, is covering the grave of painter James Ensor in Mariakerke.

King Albert II and Queen Paola attended the Leopoldfeesten in De Panne and visited an exhibition about the arrival of King Leopold I. in Veurne today.
This visit has a historical background: Prince Leopold von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha arrived 175 years ago on 17 July 1831 in De Panne. 4 days later he took in Brussels the oath as first King of Belgium. (BELGA)

The parents of Nathalie Mahy and Stacy Lemmens (=the two murdered girls from Liege) are received in private audience by Albert and Paola at the Castle of Laeken.

And Albert and Paola opened the exhibition “Science at the Palace” at the Royal Palace in Brussels today. They checked out all the “gimmicks” together with several young discoverers. (Belga)

Default Queen Paola injured due to a heavy fall

Paola broke her right shoulder and her right wrist while being on vacation in Sicily. The compound fracture – diagnosed by Italian physicians – had to be operated; therefore the royal couple stopped over their holiday and flew back to Belgium. Paola’s wrist has been operated this midday in Brussels Sint-Jans Hospital. The palace announced that the operation went well. Paola has now regained consciousness and is already able to talk with Albert. She has to stay in hospital for some days and the healing process requires a few weeks of rest. Albert and Paola plan to continue their vacation after some days of recovery. (source: nieuwsblad.be)

That's a really unfortunate news to hear (esp the broken part is shoulder, which is quite serious).. I hope the recovery happens quick for the Queen, and she can go back to her relaxing time during holiday.

http://www.hola.com/casasreales/2006...ano-accidente/

7 AUGUST 2006
(...)
Queen Paola of Belgium had to interrupt the vacations that they enjoyed in Sicily with her husband, King Albert, after suffering a spectacular accident that caused diverse fractures to her in right shoulder and hand. Due to the misfortune, the sovereigns returned immediately to Belgium, where Paola had to be put under an operation in the wrist. According to official sources have informed, the operation concluded satisfactorily and, now, happened hardest, both hope with anxieties that the day arrives in which they can retake the summer rest.
(...)

i'm not sure this picture is taken this year, but it's what accompanied the hola article (but seeing other pictures from the same article were taken on this summer, then, big chance it's a recent holiday pic of Paola)
