Belgium won't be split into two ..... if anything, it might be a four way split :-))

So the split is within the realms of possibility.

Discussions are still underway, but there were one or two glimpses of hope...

However, while the political wrangling is underway, the ultra-right French politician Marine Le Pen is intervening in the Belgians' problems !

She suggests that, if Flanders wants to become independent, the French Republic would be honoured to "swallow up" Wallonia ....

Sorry - took a bit of time out of the Belgian Politics thread :-)

The Formateur, Elio di Rupo, is still in negotiations: "This wasn't easy for anyone" (Ce n'était facile pour personne").

Nothing's decided, but at least they're talking......

Whilst Elio Di Rupo carries on with his discussions, I've been looking at some of the "vox pop" and forums.

Here's an example - in translation:
"The French-speaking community of Belgium shall from now on be called the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles....."

...but at the same time, "the Flemish Minister-President wants to keep Bruxelles as a sub-region....."

I'm losing the will to live..... :-(

Hopefully the powers that be will reach an amicable solution.

Well, they have to. I can understand only too well that each of the party-political and linguistic groupings have genuine reasons for their stances.
But there has to come a cut-off point, I think...

Sssssssh .... they're still cogitating, and Elio di Rupo is still Formateur....

...but the Presidents of the eight parties ready to form a government have brought forward the date for their next meeting (and first full meeting) - to August 19th.

Another newsflash from lesoir.be, confirming that Di Rupo will begin talks again with Yves Leterme on the 16th, and three days later with The Eight.

That's very good news, but one can't count one's chickens before they're hatched.....

In the last two weeks or so, nothing much has occurred, although there was supposed to be a meeting on the 19th.

The word "conclave" has been mentioned, though it has nothing to do with popes and cardinals !

I suppose lots of people have been on their holidays, so let's hope we can make a bit more progress, now that we're in September.

Interim Prime minister Leterme announced that he will leave his post by the end of the year so he can start a new job. Informateur DiRupo is about ready to call it a day and give the task back to the king, who in turn can look for another informateur. Really too idiotic.

King Albert: "Hurry up and strike a deal on state reforms"

AP
Tue 13/09/2011 - 10:59 King Albert has asked the representatives of the eight parties struggling to form a new Federal Government to increase their efforts to reach an agreement on state reforms. The king spoke with the Francophone socialist leader Elio Di Rupo, who is leading the talks, on Monday evening.
