This seems like a small celebration for a silver jubilee. Twenty five years on the throne is quite an accomplishment. Perhaps I've only seen the blowouts the British royals have done on Elizabeth's jubilees and I'm measuring unfairly on that yardstick. However, I do look forward to the celebrations. Congratulations, Your Majesty.

This celebration program mirrors how i have always seen the norwegian King and Queen. Not pompous, intimate, familiar and close to the people.

All royal families should be like that but aren't.

Congratulations Harald and Sonja to your first 25 years on the throne :)

The Royal couple (according to NTB/the press) didn't want a grand celebration with gala dinners and parties at the castle, but rather an down to earth celebration with the people. I agree with them in that, but when they celebrate their 80th birthdays next year (also according to the press) there will be much more celebrations with grand dinners, as we saw for their 70th birthdays.

The same can be said about the Queen (Elizabeth II) she didn't want grand gala dinners and big parties at the palaces, although she celebrated her jubilees with big festivities, but that was for the people.

And that's why i like Harald and Sonja so much (even though i like the grander parties too).

Carl Gustaf also said no to a lot of gala and glitter when he celebrated 40 years on the throne but i (sadly) feels that Harald and Sonja is much more connected to their people than my King Carl Gustaf even though he is not as impopular as he is sometimes described in the media.

Albert and Charlene of Monaco could not attend this ceremony, they are in holidays in the Maldives
I believed that King Felipe and Queen Letizia would be present.

I think that only the scandinavia royals will attend this celebration perhaps the Wessex couple , prince Edward and princess Sophie

Helt konge! Snart feirer kong Harald 25-årsjubileum - TV2.no
Quote:
January 17 marks a very special day in the King's life. There is 25 years since his father, King Olav, died, and also 25 years since he started his life as king.

''One of my most important milestones was laid in 1991. When my father, King Olav V, passed away in the night of January 17, 1991, my reign began. In the dark January night nearly 25 years ago, the Palace Square was filled with light. People came from near and far to commemorate a beloved king'' King Harald said in his New Year speech 2015.

The people's King

''When King Harald was born, he was the first prince born in Norway in 567 years. He grew up at Skaugum, and spent the war years in the United States and began at the regular elementary school when he returned to Norway. He grew up to be a king of the people.

Harald V is the new People's King - and he has in a very good way viewed our Norwegian common values. He is a unifying figure for the people and the nation, and I think he has in many ways evolved to be a moral guide for his people, says Totland.

They have made made the monarchy modern

Unlike previous kings, Harald has reigned together with his Queen. King Olav was a widower when he reigned, while Queen Maud remained in the background when King Haakon sat on the throne.

''Together Harald and Sonja has modernized the Norwegian monarchy - and brought it closer to the people. Among other things, the monarchy is far less male and militarily dominated than before. A clear sign of this is that the royal couple in 2015 employed Europe's first female hofmarschall - without military background'', says Totland.

An important symbol

''Harald has been a role model and symbol for Norway ever since he became king in 1991. He has spoken to the people both in good and bad times, and will probably be remembered especially for the touching way he met the Norwegian people after the terrorist attack on 22 July 2011.

He has not been king in times of war - but he has ruled during major crises.

In Oslo spectrum he spoke tearfully to us all - "not only as king of the land, but also as a father, husband and grandfather." I think many with me will always carry this moment. The King who mourned and wept with us - and became a symbol just as his father and grandfather were there during the war'', says Totland.

King Harald:
He is a kind, caring, compassionate and loving person who has been and still is an amazing King who almost everyone here in Norway love/like and respects.

He is (according to journalists/experts and I agree with them) Scandinavia's most beloved/popular monarch, and is now more popular than his father. His approval ratings has been on 90/93% in the last years.

Queen Sonja:
She is also a kind and caring person, and she did not deserve the criticism she received throughout the 1990s.

The Crown Prince couple:
I am sure that Haakon and Mette-Marit (which I really like, but who has made some mistakes) will do a great job as King and Queen when the time comes.

King Olav:
He had (according to Harald, Sonja and most of the grandchildren) a bad temper and insulted the family several times. Wibeke Lie a journalist who was present during a photo shooting at Skaugum in the 1980s told the media in 2014 that King Olav was furious when he come in and noticed that Sonja had moved some of the furniture.

He was very old-fashioned and conservative (even Queen Margrethe II have said he was difficult, and that her father Frederik IX thought that he was more modern than Olav).

King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrates 25 years on the throne this weekend and share new photos with the people.

TV2 royal expert Kjell Arne Totland speak about the new images.

''I think it's both beautiful and worthy images of the five that now constitute the Norwegian Royal House- The Royal Couple, Crown Prince couple and iPrincess Ingrid Alexandra. In various constellations. A nice photo of three generations, and gala picture of father and son together is perhaps the best we have of them together.

'Such official photos are also important time images. And now they go into the history books as pictures taken on the occasion of the Royal Couple's anniversary'' says Totland to VG.

I liked the three generations picture to, and my father wept when he saw them on the news.

More pictures of Norway's beloved King and his family.
