The Imperial Household Agency has said the late Emperor Hirohito and Emperor Akihito have not visited Yasukuni Shrine since 1975, "considering various social situations" and other factors of the times, Abe said. Emperor Hirohito, posthumously known as Showa, visited Yasukuni Shrine, which honors 2.47 million war dead, eight times after World War II, making the last trip in fall 1975..................

TOKYO: Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso backed away today from a remark that it would be appropriate for the emperor to visit a Tokyo war shrine, saying he was not calling for a visit at this time, Kyodo news agency reported.

71-year-old has been suffering dizzy spells since October

TOKYO - Japan’s Empress Michiko, suffering from dizzy spells, has cancelled her official duties for a week, a palace spokeswoman said on Sunday.
Michiko, 71, has had dizzy spells for unknown reasons since October, the spokeswoman for the Imperial Household Agency said.
“The Majesty the Empress plans to return to official duties after taking a sufficient rest for a week,” she said.

Off Topic: Why is that whenever I see The Emperor and The Empress addressed, they only address them as HM instead of HIM?

Mainichi news says that Empress Michiko is going to return in doing official duties this week after feeling unwell about a week ago and stayed at the Imperial Residence to rest. She and Emperor Akihito also cancelled their visit to the Hayama Imperial Villa which was scheduled last Monday.

A newly appointed foreign ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary presents his/her credentials to His Majesty the Emperor. The Minister for Foreign Affairs or another Minister of State must be present.
A horse-drawn carriage or automobile owned by the Imperial Household may be provided to the Ambassador and his/her party for transportation to and from the Imperial Palace according to the Ambassador's wishes.

Kyodo news reported that the Emperor and Empress are going to visit Miyake island on March 7, 2006. If the weather is unsuitable for them, they'll reschedule their visit to March 13, 2006.
