Some people felt that it was inappropriate to take an informal photo of the off-duty Emperor and Empress (they were on their way back to Tokyo). The Emperor and Empress do not appear too distressed by coming face to face with a teenage girl and her iPhone, so I don't think the photo itself is really the problem.

But to see the photo on Twitter did unsettle some conservative Japanese. One lady said that “Imperial family members are not TV personalities. It is not polite to casually post photos on the Internet. It makes me uncomfortable.” There seems to be a bit of tension between two views of the Emperor; that of the dignified symbol of the state, versus the informal, kindly grandfather.
 
I realize. In Japan people look at the Royal family differently.

Empress Michiko, wearing Ueda's clothes, attended the farewell service of late designer Itsuko Ueda in Tokyo on July 15, 2014 in Tokyo. Ueda had been the Empress' clothes designer for 36 years, he had died aged 85 on June 3.

Empress Michiko attended the music concert 'Flavio Ferri Benedetti Ensemble Il Profondo' celebrating the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Japan in Tokyo on September 7:

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited an apple orchard in the city of Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture, today, September 25, as part of a two-day visit to inspect the reconstruction situation following the 2011 devastating quake and tsunami.

One day before her birthday, Empress Michiko and Emperor Akihito attended a reception for an annual meeting of the International Bar Association in Tokyo.

Yes, the portraits are nice this year. Sometimes the ones taken inside the Imperial Palace, with its subdued tones and minimalist design, can appear a bit uninspired. But this year the splash of colour, and the perspective from the various horizontal lines, makes them very successful.

The Imperial Household Agency hosted a tea party to celebrate the Emperor and Empress' birthdays at the Imperial Palace on November 10:

The Emperor succeeded immediately upon the death of Emperor Showa early in the morning of 7 January 1989. Later that day at the Imperial Palace the new Emperor received two of the Three Sacred Treasures, symbolising his accession. At midnight the Showa era officially ended and the Heisei era began. This was all in accordance with the Imperial Household Law, Article 4:

Upon the demise of the Emperor, the Imperial Heir shall immediately accede to the Throne.​

The Accession Ceremonies held in 1990 confirmed what had already occurred in 1989. Some of the ceremonies, such as the Daijosai were relatively private because of sensitivities over the Government's involvement with Shinto rituals. State support was justified on the grounds that the ceremonies were primarily cultural, not religious. But it was not an entirely convincing argument, and opponents of the monarchy claimed that the ceremonies were unconstitutional. A few years ago I discovered that the Japanese Consulate had a couple of old VHS videos of the Enthronement Ceremonies, with English commentary. I borrowed them, and very fascinating they were too (so much so that I copied them to DVD and still watch them every now and then).

Three years ago I went on a tour of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto, where the Imperial Thrones of the Emperor and Empress are housed in the Shishin-den (Hall of State Ceremonies). We weren't allowed onto the courtyard in front of the Shishin-den, but, from the gate, you could just make out the Emperor's Throne.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended the International Prize for Biology award ceremony at the Japan Academy headquarters in Tokyo yesterday, December 1st.

Yesterday, December 3, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the disaster-stricken district in Hiroshima. The district was struck by a mudslide triggered by torrential rains on August 20, 74 people were killed.
