Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended the second Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize awards ceremony on the sidelines of the five-yearly Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama, suburban Tokyo, on June 1, 2013.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended the awards ceremony of the Japan Academy Prize at the Academy's headquarters in Tokyo on June 17, 2013. Empress Michiko resumed her official duties on June 17 as she suspended her official duties for a week to rest and recover from a bout of fatigue.

On June 22 Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended a tea party to celebrate Empress Michiko's 77th birthday at Kyoto Imperial Palace and they visited the Myosinji Temple in Kyoto.

On June 23 Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended the opening ceremony of the World Congress of Biological Psychiatry at the Kyoto International Conference Center in Kyoto.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended a tea party hosted by the Imperial Household Agency to celebrate Empress' 77th birthday at the Imperial Palace on June 27, 2013.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the 'Japanese Forest Restoration' exhibition at Tokyo University of Agriculture on July 10, 2013.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are on a two-day visit to areas of Fukushima Prefecture to meet people still suffering from the aftermath of the nuclear plant accident triggered by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

I know that the Emperor and Empress are not getting any younger and have had a tough schedule in the past, but it always good to see them out and about and I am always appreciative of people posting updates and images on their current events.
It is not always easy to find clear images of them.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended the annual memorial service for war victims in Tokyo on August 15, 2013 as the country marked the 68th anniversary of its surrender in World War II.

On August 20 Empress Michiko viewed the 'Love Exhibition' at the Mori Art Museum in Minato Ward, Tokyo.

On August 24 Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the Former Kaichi School in Matsumoto:

And on August 25 they viewed artworks by Kiichiro Mizumura during their visit to the Kiichiro Mizumura Museum in Toumi. Kiichiro Mizumura, who lost both his arms in an accident as a child, paints with a brush in his mouth. The Emperor and Empress have purchased two of Mizumura's works in 1981 and have them displayed in the Imperial Palace.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko were pictured playing tennis at the mountain resort Karuizawa in Nagano prefecture on August 27. Great to see them with that much joy and energy!

It was a lovely picture. A picture of them playing tennis, doing something active than the usual pictures (no offense to anyone-i hope).
A couple of questions-- how did Akihito's interest in tennis begin, and does the whole family play (i.e. grandchildren, cousins, etc)?

Thank you for posting these pictures - it is so heartening to see the Emperor and Empress playing tennis and enjoying a sport they love - especially considering their age and the health issues they have suffered in recent years! It seems that they are both in much better health these days and I am glad for it.
