Thanks for all the sharing. So many lovely pictures and moments. It's much more relaxed at Marselisborg.

This picture. The Queen in front and behind her the heir to the throne with his wife in his hand and their four children beside them. That's a nice picture.

"Crown Princess Mary saw one of the attendants who had taken a bouquet of flowers to the queen. She discreetly made the queen aware of it. It did not take the grandchildren much more than a few seconds before they had jumped into the park to pick up the bouquet - to the great surprise of the security people. The queen received the bouquet with a flag with great enthusiasm."

Beautiful photos! The kids are so grown up. Goodness me Christian will be very tall! He already is!

Lovely to see the photos. The children have all shot up since we last saw them. I also thought Vincent looked a lot like Mary here. This part of the family seems to be very warm and close - I love this photo of Frederik with his arm around Josephine.
It was rather disappointing not to see Joachim and his family there. I wonder why they were all absent.

Prince Christian used to look the image of his father; now, he's looking more like his mom. Also, will Queen Margrethe abdicate when she's 80 years old? Anyway, the family looks very happy and that's good.

Joachim's entire family was absent. They better have some legitimate reasons (other than they are holidaying somewhere else).

(Joachim & Marie & Co. are moving to France in the summer. The course starts in September. It's only April now so that's not good enough for me. And I have no idea what Nikolai & Felix are doing.)

Better or legitimate to whom? There's no law saying that you have to spend your mum's birthday at her house you know.

There are many things expected in this world that's not written in LAW. And they are not just ANYBODY, they are not US; they are a part of the DRF. Everything they do, intentionally or unintentionally, will attract attention.

But that's just my opinion, you don't have to agree with me, as I don't agree with you.

Summary of article in Billed Bladet #17, 2019.
Written by Trine Larsen.

Who were present when the DRF went out on the terrace at Marselisborg on her birthday recently.

The weather was cold but otherwise clear at noon on that day. The locals had gathered in the garden behind Marselisborg where the terrace is located. The Music Corps played and there, the DRF came out and waved the best they could. Moving around freely, as there is considerably more room to do that, than on the balconies at Amalienborg.
Not present were Joachim and our Marie and their children. They had started their Easter holiday abroad somewhere (presumably France, why should Marie always celebrate Easter in DK?) a few days earlier.

At some point Mary noticed someone in the crowd holding a bouquet of flowers they seemed eager to hand over. Mary then, according to our reporter, suggested to QMII that the children should pick up the bouquet. Mary quickly persuaded her four children to fetch the bouquet, even though Josephine initially appealed to mother to go with them.
With Bella in front and Josephine staying close to Christian the children completed the task, and somehow Christian ended up handing over the bouquet to QMII.

While waving their arms off there was time for some loving interaction between Mary and Vincent. Frederik and Mary. Mary and Bella and a small fight between Christian and Vincent.
Apparently Christian wanted to pad his kid brother on the cheek, but accidentally slapped him instead. Vincent was not pleased! But that was soon forgotten.

But see for yourselves here:

There is also a large, as in very large, interview with Benedikte, that I will summarize tomorrow.

Thank you Muhler for the summary (I'd be fascinated to see the interview with Benedikte!). The anecdote about Christian and Vincent made me smile, as it shows that the royals are regular folks and have the same family disputes and dynamics as us (bar the fact the perks of their lifestyles, of course!).

The Palace made an announcement prior to Queen Margrethe's 81st birthday in around 3 weeks (April 16).

It will be like last year due to the corona virus situation:

The Majesty and the royal family will thus not come out on the balcony this year during the change of guard at Amalienborg at 12.00. Instead, the Queen celebrates the day privately at Fredensborg Castle. ⁣

However, it will still be possible to send the Queen a birthday greeting on the Royal House's digital platforms.

** kongehuset: H.M. Dronningens 81-års fødselsdag **

It may be a disappointment for the nation not to get the show but If I was turning 81 and not always in the best of health I would silently be kinda thankful for a nice small family party.

Wonderful to see the queen's birthday being marked and I miss the balcony scenes.

She always looks kind and cheerful:) Happy Birthday Queen Margrethe!

Like last year, I still think it's a bit detrimental to essentially tell people to stay away and then entertain the people who show up anyway. But then, I can sympathise with QMII not wanting to disappoint people who've come for her sake.

Later a little surprise concert was given.

It's good to be the Queen, and even her dog seems to know it. If only they took requests! (And what a beautiful coat/wrap.)

Does anyone know what they were actually playing?

The (Danish) birthday song.
A gallop (I can't place it off hand though.)
The theme to Matador. (An extremely popular TV-series, which Mary and our Marie used when learning Danish, and get acquainted with Danish culture, history and mindset.)
Svante's Happy Day. (The lyrics defines Danish mindset and offers a very good explanation as to why we seemingly are so happy.)
A mixed medley I couldn't make out.

As always around QMIIs birthdays various anecdotes with her are published.

This is from the TV-journalist, Janni Pedersen.
Back in 2005 her husband, who is a journalist and author, had written a book about a Ugandan woman, Esther Tibasiimas, who was suffering from AIDS and who lived in the slum of Kampala - the capital of Uganda.
In connection with that book and because she was to receive an award, the Pedersen family was visited by Esther, and Janni was taking Esther for a tour of Fredensborg Palace.
While looking at the place Janni told that it was here Mary and Frederik got married. (Their wedding was shown on TV in various African countries. So was the wedding between Alexandra and Joachim. Taking place on a snowy day it could hardly be more exotic from an African point of view I guess.)
That was something that really impressed Esther: "Here stands an AIDS-afflicted woman from the slum of Kampala looking at a royal palace. The contrast is fantastic and I am myself very moved by the situation."
In fact Esther has tears in her eyes, when one of the security around the palace comes up and says, that is they keep an appropriate distance, they will see QMII coming out to inspect the memorial set up for Queen Ingrid, located near the palace.
They accept this most unexpected invitation.
Here is the memorial: https://bt.bmcdn.dk/media/cache/resolve/image_1240/image/164/1647025/23721678-.jpg
They watch QMII paying her respects to Queen Ingrid and when QMII pass them on the way back, Esther sits down greeting QMII reverently as is custom in Africa when showing deep respect for an elder.
"The the Queen looks at Esther, places her hand on her heart, bow to her, smiles and walk on. All the Queen's attention was directed towards Esther. It was such a fine moment, that I enjoyed immensely."

Esther also got to meet the then PM, Anders Fogh. Esther accompanied Janni to Christiansborg (The Parliament) where she was to do an interview. And here they met the PM, whom Janni approached and asked to say hello to Esther.
It impressed Esther a lot that you could just meet both the Queen and the PM.

- A heartwarming story, that shows both the wisdom and knowledge of QMII as well as her personality - she could after all just have walked on.

That is a lovely little story. It is often the small fleeting moments with a Royal that become so irreverent and long lasting in ones memory. A moment of awe becomes an inspiring thought.

:previous: So true.

BB reports in some details from QMII being celebrated in the evening of her birthday, Friday.
https://www.billedbladet.dk/kongeli...t-i-fredensborg-se-hvem-der-dansede-margrethe

As we already know M&F came and so did Benedikte.
We also know that QMII is very fond of ballet and often attend performances in the Royal Theater. But the theater has pretty much been closed down for most of this past year, due to Corona, so a group of ballet dancers came and danced a part from two ballets, that QMII has not been able to see.

The Palace made an announcement about the upcoming 82th birthday of Queen Margrethe next month.

It will be the "first time in three years that the Queen's birthday is marked with a birthday parade" and the royal family greeting the well-wishers.

11.20
The public will have access to Slotshaven in front of and east of Marselisborg Castle.
(..) 11.45
The Royal Life Guards Music Corps and the incoming guard march from Gardergården to the castle.
(..) 12.00
The queen and the royal family appear on the veranda and the birthday parade takes place. This is done by the Music Corps marching up next to the castle

I'm delighted.

The atmosphere at Amalienborg is special, but from a photo-point of view Marselisborg is better.
It's closer to the public and more eye to eye, and the whole family can fit into one photo, not to mention that they can move about. I hope we will see Athena and Josephine together, And I hope they are still up to a little mischief or at least prepared to entertain the crowd.

I wonder if we are going to see some Ukrainian flags this year?
Thousands of Ukrainian refugees are coming in and being housed, send to school/kindergarten and getting a job these days. It might be a nice diversion for some of them to take part in a public celebration. It doesn't really matter what it is, I'd say. It's taking part in something joyful that matters.

Video by the Palace:

"This year, the Aarhus castle Marselisborg forms the setting for Her Majesty the Queen's 82nd birthday

Around the castle, the spring flowers sprout up, and at 8.00 this morning, the Royal Flag was hoisted on the castle's flagpole. At the same time, the Royal Life Guard wore the red guard gala"
