The live interview was quite funny, but having seen DR's documentary "Dronning Margrethe" last Sunday + Monday, I was disappointed to see a lot of the same questions being asked. On the other hand, it might be limited what kinda stuff Ulla Terkelsen was allowed to ask the Queen about.

The painting is rather ghastly, but I like the idea of Margrethe, Frederik and little Christian all in one painting.
 
This artwork reminds me of bad wax figures. But I know Fredrik & Mary favor some pretty cutting edge contemporary artists, so maybe that could serve as an explaination?
 
I think the artist captured Prince Christian very well, myself.

I'd have liked to have seen Margrethe wear the black tulle evening gown for an official portrait. It is quite theatrical and would maintain an impressive presence. It suited her very well, imo.

The painter, Niels Strøbæk, has painted the queen before (http://www.lisahoyrup.dk/jk/dronningemaleren-der-ikke-h%C3%B8rte-efter-i-timen/ - plus another one where she wears a pink/salmon coloured dress); it might have been the queen's wish to use Strøbæk's 'super realism' again.
As far as I remember, Strøbæk has also painted at least one of the portraits of politicians hanging at Christiansborg.
 
Terrible painting. I don't understand why Prince christian never wears a tie in formal events? I have never seen him wear a tie, at that age, bow-tie?
 
I don't like the painting either...Crown Prince Frederik is far more handsome than how he is portrayed in that painting!

I thought this is wire! she does not have a cell phone! in todays life it seems stange for soembody in this position to be in touch at least with her sons!....

Oh please no, no tie or bow-tie for little boys! He's just that, a little boy, and he is dressed just fine as he is. It's just my opinion of course.
 
I think he looks just fine... and adorable ;) I agree with UserDane... no ties and definatly no bowties... yuck.

He's done at least three paintings of HM! Here's a link to a photo of the one with the pink/salmon/coral (or red ? ;)) coloured gown, which dates from approx. the mid 1990s. Dronning Margrethe kommer op på nyt lærred .
IMO the best of the three is a portrait owned by HM, which depicts a mirror with a mirror image of HM holding a sketchpad and a pencil. The mirrorframe is adorned with bits and pieces typical of HM, like embroidery threads and letters. It's from 1977. I've not been able to find anything about it online.

The painting is just horrible, I think. But then the other paintings he has made of the queen is pretty bad as well, so maybe she likes his style.

I am happy to see her wear the emeralds for once though.
 
I agree with everyone else and feel that the painting is a bit of a let down!

I wonder whether Joachim enjoys these events or if his mind is somewhere else when his wife is probably due any day now!
 
The painting is just childish IMO but you do get portraits in such style. I do like the 3 generations and its kind of cute that Christian is looking up to the Queen but I think I would prefer if Christian was looking ahead.
Lovely pictures of the family but a pity that the Queen sisters aren't in attendance but I know that th actually festival starts tomorrow so more likely you will see them. Also sad Marie is attending but thats due to her pregnancy.

Is that by Strøbek as well? That is definitely the best of the lot; I remember it well - it's of a very young Margrethe. I couldn't find it online either. But it is one of the paintings I like best - that and the paintings by Thomas Kluge - Galleri | Thomas Kluge

The queen reportedly drily commented one of Kluge's paintings of her, "You certainly didn't miss a thing, did you?"

Agree!!These children,any children,are not sitting up walking talking dolls dressed by an imbecile who wants her kids to win a fashion contest.They already are top of the bill but no need at this age,or ever,to emphasize that.Royalty doesn't need it,and the kids can remain kids as long as that might take...Thank goodness for that.....!:)
 
TV-schedule of the coverage of the celebrations.

DR1, which you will probably be able to watch live via the Net, will basically show the celebrations non-stop Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday.

The coverage starts at 09.00.

At 09.50 the DRF will board the royal waggon and go by train to the town of Roskilde. Once there they will drive to the cathedral and lay down a wreath at the graves of Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid. (they are placed in an enclosure outside the cathedral).

At 12.30 the Regent Couple will ride in a carriage from Amalienborg, through the narrow streets of Copenhagen escorted by the Guards Hussars, to Copenhagen Townhall.
In the mean time the other members of the DRF will be driven to the townhall. I don't know whether the SRF and NRF will be present as well.
The official reception will take place at 13.00.
14.30: QMII will step out on the balcony at the townhall.
15.00: The townhall show ends.

17.50: Coverage from the DR1 Concert Hall.
From around 19.00 the higher ranking guests will starts to arrive. The more grander guest will arrive as the last, they should include the SRF, NRF and the DRF, as I understand it.
20.00: The show starts.
It ends at some point late in the evening.

Sunday.

The TV coverage starts at 11.00. Here they will send live from Amalienborg.
At 12.00 QMII and probably the rest of the DRF as well, will step out on the balcony.

14.30: Live feed from the celebratory service at the chapel at Christiansborg, where all the big wigs of DK will be present as well. Presumably also the SRF and NRF.

16.00: A rerun of the gala show from Saturday.

19.00: The guests start to arrive at Christiansborg for the galadinner. We are talknig gala uniforms, long dresses and major bling, bling!
20.00: The gala dinner starts. Frederik will be among those who will give a speech for QMII.

The peinting is in my opinion just as hideous in the magazine. I did howver notice on TV that the painting contains a lot of minute details, that become visible when you look at it up close. - Stil don't like the perspective and composition though.

Aaanyway, Niels Strøbek painted it. The setting is the Knights Hall/Great Hall in the palai, where the Regent Couple reside. Through the window you can see the palais where M&F has their home. (*) He is among QMII's favorite artists and he has indeed portrayed her three times before. It is however the first time he has painted Frederik and it's the first painting Christian is in at all.

The three royals took turn in going to the atelier of Niels Strøbek to pose.
He said about Christian that he handled the task as a model very well: "Christian is as children should be. There were no problems".

QMII is for once portrayed with her glasses on. Niels Strøbek explains: "The Queen is the main character in my painting, because the occasion for why it is even painted is the 40th jubilee of the Queen. That's why Crown Prince Frederik is standing behind his mother and is looking in the same direction as her, while Christian looks trustingly up at his farmor (paternal grandmother). It's the monarchy and it's continuation we see".

The painting is 2.50 meters X 1.75 and it took a year to complete. The painting will now be exhibited at Frederiksborg Slot (not Fredensborg Slot).

(*) Aren't those tho palais placed directly opposite? Which means that it would be impossible to see Frederik VIII's Palais in that angle?

QMII is 182 centimeters tall or 6 feet.

QMII is the 221st in line for the British throne. - The same rules do not apply for the Danish throne. There is no 221st in line for the Danish Throne.

In 1972 QMII became Allied-Colonel-in-Chief of the then The Queen's Regiment, later Princess of Wales Royal Regiment.
in 1997 she became Colonel-in-chief of The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment.

Today, January 12, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik hosted a lunch for the EU Commission at Amalienborg
Palace in Copenhagen to celebrate both Denmark's current EU chairmanship and the Queen's jubilee.

A couple of more personal details fom the TV2 interview:

About her faith. her religion really started to come into play whan she became Queen: "I had of course Christianity at school and I had been confirmed and went to church with father and mother at Christmas, New Year and Easter.
It really came in connection with me becoming Queen. Then I suddenly knew/realised that it wasn't something I could handle on my own.
My father was a devout man in a straight forward way. He believed in his God and went to church. And he cursed like all sailors, certainly back then, did.
But when I stood with the responsibillity alone, it became obvious that it wasn't something you could carry alone. It took something more".


About loving your country: "I think we all need something that keeps us upright. Just like a buoy in the water. What you call love of your country is one of the things that is very significant to have in a globalized world. Otherwise you become rootless/loose your roots. You need to know. where you come from.
It's very important that we don't think we can do without our connection to our fatherland/motherland. Globalization is not necessarily the same as being rootless/having no roots".


About her going out in the public streets, shopping or whatever she is doing. She does notice the odd whipser to tourists: "That's our Queen".
But apart from that: "People aren't exactly jeering. They notice it's me and perhaps they say howdy (*) or hi. But it's always in a very discreet way. I don't feel gawked at, as you might be in other countries".

(*) Davs = Howdy = informal, perhaps somewhat rural greeting.
Hej = Hi = informal greeting.
G'dag or 'dag = G'day or 'day = informal greeting. (I use these four mentioned here all the time myself).
Goddag = Good day = formal greeting.

I just cannot say how hoorified and embarrased I was to see that painting unveiled. It is so shocking and Christian should have been more formally dressed as it is a formal and well !!!! IMPORTANT PORTRAIT. What a stupid thing to have done.

Christian's a little boy. I'm glad to see him in a smart outfit. He didn't need to decked out in a mini three piece suit or tuxedo. He's not in the military, he's just a kid.
 
I don't have a problem with how Christian is dressed either since he's a young child and is actually garbed quite nicely. I even like how he's posed. But I just find the figures to be very stiff, flat and wax-like, although depicted with great skill.
