Oh well.
So am I. I was really looking forward to a nice tiara event. It is always so nice to see not only the royals, but also the relatives and aristocratic friend trotting out their tiaras.

Today BT has an article on PH, on this being his birthday. (It's also the Devil's birthday today BTW. - And being the Devil he has birthday twice a year, the two days the mortgage is due...).

Prins Henrik fylder 80 i dag: Så højt elsker vi ham - Royale | www.bt.dk

With a few delightful pics: http://www.bt.dk/sites/default/files...433594---2.jpg
Here as snake charmer.

http://www.bt.dk/sites/default/files...433593---1.jpg
At the hippie and hashis-enclave Christiania.

http://www.bt.dk/sites/default/files...433597---5.jpg
At a hunt. - He's certain to be noticed! And if you can't hit the deers you can at least stun them...

The article deals with PH's popularity and he has indeed become pretty popular in recent years.
From a low point around the time, when he grumped about being relegated to number three in the royal pecking order, simply because Frederik has certain functions as a Crown Prince.
I understand this may be based in a cultural difference. While a Danish father would beam with pride over seeing his son taking over, a French (and perhaps a very conservative Frenchman at that) would frown at being "usurped" by his son.
Running off to Cayz complaining about being demoted and wishing to be equal with his wife, wasn't exactly endearing either.
His mastery of spoken Danish (his understanding of Danish is nothing short of brilliant) wasn't something to write home about either! Accent is forgivable but consistent basic gramattical mistakes are an irritant. - You are seen as not doing an effort to join and fit in with the tribe/village. The tribe being the opposite of cosmopolitan, so if you don't fit in, you are out. It's 0 or 1.

That has changed, not least helped by the portrait book some years back, which gave us a deeper insight to the man.
Now he's the somewhat excentric but endearing grandad who has his faults like everyone else.

But back to the article. It is claimed that he has become something of a cult figure among young peolpe, I don't know if that's true, but his excentricity is certainly appreciated and so is his habit of goofing around from time to time. His visit to Christiania (I guess every country has a weed-enclave somewhere, so imagine your own royals or first lady strolling about in suce a neighborhood and the reaction that would get) earned him a lot of credits!

He has become a popular item in a radio satire show, Monte Carlo, where his recipies have been read aloud with veneration and the host weren't mocking him, it's more a kind of endearing teasing.
To quote one: "We love Prince Henrik, because he in every way rests within himself (is in harmony). Some may think it's for the fun of it or with an ironic distance. But nothing could be more wrong. We are are very fond of his good mood, his lust for knowledge and in particular his behavior/way to be.
He's never afrais to step out of the role as Prince Consort and play the entertainer. And then we have to bow in admiration of a man who speaks five languages".

- In other words, he has been fully accepted by the tribe. Or perhaps rather, the tribe has gotten used to him and embraced him.

Exactly.

The so-called royal expert and historian Lars Hovbakke Sørensen says to Ekstra Bladet: "Although Prince Henrik can't measure his popularity with neither the Queen or the Crown Prince Couple, there is a growing recognition of his qualities."

And that's exactly how it is. Henrik is special and no, his popularity in the various polls is not even close to the Queen or the Crown Prince couple, but he is loved anyway. In his own unique way I think. And I would say it has come over the last year ...

I need to highlight these pictures...

Because a man with his daugther is always... Frederik with Josephine
http://cache3.asset-cache.net/gc/450...bSl71VNA%3d%3d

Just because it's a nice pic
http://cache4.asset-cache.net/gc/450...3EpRqMZw%3d%3d

Because I think there re two little ones who should have slept an hour longer
http://cache1.asset-cache.net/gc/450...ydbe%2fQ%3d%3d

Because Henrik is Henrik, but maybe he still should have buttoned all the buttons of his shirt
http://cache3.asset-cache.net/gc/450...yEQ04VCQ%3d%3d

Because Mary looks amazing and IMO perhaps pregnant (probably most wishful thinking) ;smile:
http://cache3.asset-cache.net/gc/450...%2b%2bvg%3d%3d
http://cache1.asset-cache.net/gc/450...WBZb9h5w%3d%3d

Because Christian, as opposed to 99% of the Danes, isn't afraid of Grandpapa's dachshunds
http://cache2.asset-cache.net/gc/450...WaBr%2bg%3d%3d

Some very lovely pics of the familiy, hope they enjoy the day at Caix.

Josephine's little white dress is similar to that dress Isabella wore on the official pictures at F&M's 10th anniversary

And we have a nine picture gallery from BT: Se billederne: Her fejrer Prins Henrik fødselsdagen med alle børnebørnene | www.bt.dk

The Danish press appears to be waking up from their midday-slumber, we have, wait for it, a video from DR1: VIDEO Prins Henrik fejrer 80-års fødselsdag i familiens skød | Nyheder | DR

The bottom video is nice. PH is welcoming Danish tourists to his estate and being congratulated.

Nikolai has suddenly grown up!

I noticed our Marie made sure Athena sat and her dress was pulled down in a way, so there would be no upskirt views, even though she's very young.

Bella appears to have a very close bond with her grandpapa, just as QMII appears to have a close bond with Christian. Very typical - farmors little boy and farfars little girl.

The photographer Jacob Jørgensen has created this...eeh-I'm-not-quite-sure-what-it-is-but-it-sure-is-aah-novel picture of PH on his 80th birthday: http://royalista.com/wp-content/cach...ox500@1.5x.jpg

A unicorn-goat?!? Okay, now I've lived to see that...

Thank you for posting the video and pictures. Because my Danish is not what it should be, I wonder if Danish speakers could give a quick overview of what is being said, particularly the jokes!

Le prince Joachim en famille avec sa femme la princesse Marie, le prince Henrik, la princesse Athena...

I like these two pics of Athena, she looks decidedly mischievious.

And who can resist this one: Vue du château de Cayx, propriété de la reine Margrethe II depuis 1974, où le prince consort Henrik ...

I noticed in quite a number of pics that bette Henrik was rubbing his eyes.
It's well known that Joachim suffers from pollen allergy (grass) and I wonder if bette Henrik has got a touch of that as well?
The grass pollen level here in DK has been very high recently.

I considered translating what was said on the video, Gerry, but I simply couldn't hear what was said. (Old and ancient and half deaf, you know...). Perhaps someone with better ears can help?

And another thanks from me to those who shared some photos and videos with us. It appears that the DRF get along nicely and that there isn't any tension between them, like some other European RFs.
I like how Margarethe wore a daisy brooch and earrings - I must admit that I did have to think twice about Margarethe's connection with daisies, but then my brain started working again. It's nice to see little Athena again, she's very cute. I love her curly hair! It's a pity that no one wore sunglasses, because then she could do this! And Josephine is adorable too, she makes me melt every time I see a new photo of her.

Nice pictures - lovely families. Makes me wish I had grandchildren! And how nice to see Nikolai helping his grandmother (Farmor?) down the stairs. I'm sure she appreciated that.

Neither can I hear much in the video, Muhler... I do can hear a reporter ask Henrik: "You are very gastronomic, do you then have the perfect recipe how to fill 80 years?" Which Henrik, Margrethe and Mary find quite funny.

And then I can hear that Margrethe says to Christian: "Come and stand here with me, oh you big boy..." As always, it's unavoidable to notice the special bond Margrethe and Christian has. They are always walking hand in hand and never more than max a step from each other at those events. The same thing with Henrik and his first little girl Isabella ...
