Moroccan princess Lalla Amina received special prize from international Olympic committee

Morocco, Politics, 3/8/2004

Morocco's Princess Lalla Amina, chairperson of the Moroccan Royal Federation of Equestrian Sports, received this Sunday a special prize from the International Olympic Committee which is holding this March 7-9 its 3rd conference on "women and sports, new strategies and new commitments."

The princess, aunt of king Mohammed VI, highlighted in an acceptance address the brilliant performance of Moroccan female athletes in various athletics events, stressing that women "have thus achieved equality with men, a fact which has recently been enshrined by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in a modern Family Law which preserves, in an exemplary and unprecedented way, the rights of women and children alike."

She also considered the honorary prize as "a tribute to the efforts made by Morocco for the advancement of sport, under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and thanks to his active support for all athletes, especially women."

The IOC conference held under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI is attended by IOC president, Count Jacque Rogge, president of the Moroccan Olympic Committee (CNOM), General Hosni Benslimane, president of the African Football Federation and IOC member, Issa Hayatou, and several other foreign and Moroccan figures.

A record 44% of athletes will be women in the Athens Olympic games. The IOC expects an equal number of men and women to compete in future Games. "Our ultimate goal must be 50-50 participation," Rogge said in his speech.

Princess Lalla Amina underscore Sunday at an acceptance address of the International Olympic Committee's Special prize that "Morocco has become a key player in various international athletics events, thanks to many champions, especially in women's competitions, where Moroccan women have performed outstandingly."

Speaking at the IOC World Conference on Women and Sport held in Marrakesh this March 7-9, the princess who is chairwoman of the Moroccan royal federation of equestrian sports, stressed that Moroccan female champions reflects women's integration in all walks of life. "They have thus achieved equality with men, a fact which has recently been enshrined by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in a modern Family Law which preserves, in an exemplary and unprecedented way, the rights of women and children alike," she went on.

"I feel particularly proud that Moroccan women managed to come out of the shackles of exclusion and marginalization. They are now contributing to building a prosperous, modern and democratic Morocco, alongside their male fellow citizens, under the guidance of the glorious Alawite Throne, which has immensely contributed to the emancipation of Moroccan women from all forms of backwardness," said the princess.

The Moroccan princess also said "I also wish to express my gratitude and say how touched I was by the honorary prize kindly awarded to me." She added that the prize of "a tribute to the efforts made by Morocco for the advancement of sport, under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and thanks to his active support for all athletes, especially women."

Morocco
Royal speech Addressed to the Special session of the
General assembly
On HIV/AIDS

Delivered by

Lalla Joumala Alaoui
Head of the delegation of the Kingdom of Morocco
To the Special Session

New York, 25 Juin 2001

Mr. Chairman,

His Majesty Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, has entrusted me with the honour of reading out the following royal speech on his behalf and conveying His
Majesty's greetings and consideration for this important gathering.

Mr. Chairman
Your Majesty, your Excellencies, your Highnesses Your Excellency, the Secretary General
Ladies and Gentlemen

I am pleased to say how much the Kingdom of Morocco appreciates the decision taken by the United Nations General Assembly to convene a special session on the subject of AIDs/HIV. This is a commendable initiative for which I wish full success. I also hope this UN gathering will manage to mobilize resources which are necessary to fight this deadly epidemic and thus overcome the blatant contradiction which consists in hailing health as one of the human rights, while there is actual discrimination between developed countries which have been able to contain the spread of AIDs thanks to their potentialities and to the use they make of medical research, on one hand, and the developing countries which are powerless to check the spread of the disease, because they lack minimum prevention and treatment capacity. This is particularly true for the African continent which is facing this ominous danger.

We are trying to cope with the constraints of globalization and to keep abreast of the developments taking place around the world. In addition, we are endeavouring to keep up with the migration flows which have now made it impossible for any nation to remain immune from this epidemic.

In this context, providing medical protection as well as supplying the necessary drugs and medical hardware, require susbstantial resources from the national budgets, in addition to exemptions from taxes and customs duties for those medical supplies which are deemed necessary, especially drugs on which depends the citizens' health, without any discrimation based on social, geographic or ethnic grounds.

In this regard, we commend the praiseworthy steps taken by the Secretary General of the United Nations to set up an international fund in order to enable AIDs - afflicted nations among developing countries to secure antiretroviral drugs.

Morocco has developed, as part of its effort to fight AIDs, a comprehensive strategy based on detection, therapy and prevention. It calls for the involvement of all actors, including government agencies and the civil society, in large - scale awareness - raising campaigns through the media and among young people and risk populations at large.

At the same time, we are responding to the concerns set out in the draft UN Pledge, being considered at the current session.
In expressing satisfaction with the UN initiatives, Morocco hopes to get the preferential prices granted to other countries. It also calls for the setting up of additional international cooperation and coordination mechanisms to fight this epidemic which poses a threat not only to our development effort, but also to health safety in the world.

Given the experience, skills and know-how accumulated by Morocco and its professional labour force over the years, and considering its continuous monitoring, evaluation and adaptation effort with respect to the initiatives and actions undertaken in this field, Morocco is ready to put its modest experience at the disposal of the international community, and more particularly the African nations, in confirmation of its strong commitment to the principles of effective solidarity which should guide us all in our endeavours.

Wassalamu Alaiku?.

It is nice from KM6 that he pays attention to AIDS/HIV. Although Morocco has a low rate of AIDS they have to pay attention to it.

In fact, it was really late Princess Lalla Fatima Zohra (Princess of the Poor) who spoke as a first about AIDS back in 90’s and Arab world was in quite shock. She simply cared about the well-being of people. :flower:

can muslimah talk about taboo issues, for example AIDS
why not. We can talk about everything but just some people are very conservative and such people do live in the West too.

can you talk about everything publicly like West?.
yes we can !! in the islam there is no shame to talk about sex in public if you ever heard an imam talking about men and woman , and when some one asked them a question about this they just answer this question openly. But you may not bother the world with stories about having sex with many boys or something like that. . i hope you understand what i mean.

have you heard about 'cities of salt?'

they are being sold as the new 'palace walk trilogy'. they are about a bedioun village during the discovery oil in the arabian desert. it is a thinly veiled story about saudi arabia. supposedly the books have been banned all over the middle east.

i am dieing to read them.

Malika Oufkir

Born in 1953, Malika Oufkir was the eldest daughter of General Oufkir, the king of Morocco's closest aide. Adopted by the king at the age of five, Malika was one of the most elgible heiresses in the kingdom and had spent most of her childhood and adolescence in the seclusion of the court harem, surrounded by luxury and extraordinary privilege. Then on August 16, 1972, her father was arrested and executed after an attempt to assassinate the king. Malika, her five younger brothers and sisters, and her mother were immediately imprisoned in a desert penal colony. After 15 years, the last 10 of which they spent locked up in solitary cells, the Oufkir children managed to dig a tunnel with their bare hands and make an audacious escape. Recaptured after five days, Malika was finally able to leave Morocco and begin a new life in exile in 1996.
