There has been a conflict between the two countries over the island for the past 30 so years but there has been good communication and semi-strong ties between the two countries. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed was in Iran a couple of months ago.

Like he was going to be absent from his sons wedding...
Sheikh Suror..The chamberlain of the presidential court and an important member of the "Bani Mohammad bin Khalifa".
The fact that the leader of the "Bani Fatima" is marrying his son to Surors daughter will not go unnoticed.

It seems they thought it more important (and the perfect opportunity) to cement an internal Al Nahyan family alliance rather than another Al Nahyan-Al Maktoum alliance.

Given that there just exists two powerful fractions within the family it makes a lot of sense.
The Al-Maktoums and Al-Nahyans are connected enough..Heck, Sheikh Mo´s mum was Al-Nahyan. Both clans come from the same oasis (Al-Ain)

It was, a bunch of small villages surrounding it, no wonder the Maktoums raised 800 warriors and opted for taking over Dubai instead.
Not that Dubai was anything remarkable those days..
