No you are not the only one. IMO this is the strangest dresscode for ladies that exists in world of royalty.

Honestly as much as I love tradition, this dresscode could be modified. Either go all out with a tiara event like the UK's State Opening of Parliment or opt for elegant day wear like the Danes and Swedes. IMO, Princess Margriet is the winner of the Dutch fashion parade today.

I think that depends on the hat that they decide to wear. The lunch box of HM, the cowboy hat of Máxima and the weird thing of Laurentien aren't very elegant in combination with long dresses indeed. But there should be options to achieve a more succesful look.

The dresscode was en vogue from the 30-ties to the 70-ties at many royal events in Europe. To wear tiaras at a day event would be a bit too much IMHO, the RF is already overdressed enough as it is.

I did not like the way how Máxima ended up in the middle of the group and is towering over the Queen with her evita-style waves (in the pictures). She isn't queen yet and she should pay attention not to make it a one-(wo)man show. Not that HM seems to mind.

The dress of the queen was beyond rediculous btw. One of the worst she has ever worn.

The Queen stands never in the middle on the balcony. Last year it was Willem-Alexander, this year Máxima.

It is a lovely dress code and a wonderful tradition. One would never think of wearing a hat with a full length evening gown. However, most of royals did look both chic and elegant. Not certain about Princess Maxima's hat though. Definitely not feminine enough for her, although I did love her gown Gorgeous shade too but the way in which she wore the sash was a bit odd. Queen Beatrice also looked lovely but I felt her hat was just far too large for her.

one could think that this is happening on purpose, preparing the Dutch to step aside and being used to team WAX at center stage already

Me too, other royal families have their traditional costumes for certain celebrations and
they have their special dress code, that's also a nice tradition.



I like it, too. In the old days (up to the 1960s) this was the dress code for royal ladies at all major state occasions where no evening dress and tiaras could be worn (due to daytime). It was used for royal weddings that took place in the morning, for instance.
Queen Anne Marie of Greece used it at the Te Deum on greece´s national day or for the christening of her two eldest children.
It gave royal ladies the opportunity to wear their orders and sashes which are only used matching long dresses. I find that fair as royal ladies should be able to wear their orders as often as their male counterparts, who can use them all the time due to their outfits (morning suits, uniforms etc.).

I truely pity that the royal ladies in Norway and Sweden do not use the dutch dress code! The state opening of parliament is one of the most important state occasions for the royal family in the whole year, so everybody who possesses the highest of the country´s orders, should be able to use them, which is not possible with a short dress, as I stated above.
Queen Sonja, for instance, who sits beside her husband, who´s in full uniform, sitting on a throne at the parliament opening, would look lovely with a nice hat, a long dress and her Order of St. Olav!

You are right, it suits her, but the style of the hat does not fit with the style of the outfit.... evening robe meets cowboy

I've wondered about that myself. I noticed that recent photo shoots ie: Lech 2011 shows W-A and Max in the center.

I don't follow the Dutch RF that much but Maxima is among those people I genuinely like. It's her attitude. She's always cheerful and positive to look at, but I also like her because she has a figure and looks like a women.
Fortunately she has never fallen victim for the "fashion gurus" who insist that women should preferably resemble anorexia cases.
