No, that was a missed chance. It was just one of the various celebrations in various cities. There was a short program with music, dance and art (fashion) and then a symposium. The royal guests then mingled on a gastronomic festival in the city, that was the plan.

Of course there has been a fair amount of critisism on the celebrations, especially among historians - since the comittee forgets the shortlived kingdom of Holland under Louis Napoleon.
.

The "Kingdom of Holland" was a puppet regime installed by a foreign power that had invaded and occupied the Low Countries. It would be odd to celebrate it considering that the modern Kingdom of the Netherlands under the House of Orange-Nassau was born precisely out of the struggle to free the country from French occupation.

-
Anyway, it was nice to see the Benelux monarchs all together. It seems the Dutch king has a new hairstyle.
.

Belgium was originally part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Luxembourg, although not technically part of the kingdom, was nonetheless in personal union with it. It makes sense then that the neighboring BENELUX sovereigns should attend the ceremony.

In the PPE Gallery of pictures, Max is hungry, she is putting food in her mouth like she is starving..............:lol::lol::lol::lol: and I bet that is really great food, wish I had some of that.......:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Max looks so beautiful, I love her dress and want some of that fabric so I can make a dress for me........just gorgeous. MT, she is pretty in that shade of green, nice color on her, yet she needs to just stop the calories at some point. Mathilda, that hat is still broken and damaged and not a good hat if that is what it's called. Love her dress, not the hat. Men, the same as usual, nothing different............

Max?? Why not call Queen Mathilde "Mat" then? Made up names for people whether royal or not is rude.

There was an enthusiast reception of the royals at the Preuvenemint (the Fête Gastronomique) at the Vrijthof square. Here a picture of Queen Máxima mingling with the public:

Apparently the royal company was welcomed in the pavillion of the Struys Commitee, the organisators of the event, named to the centuries old café In Den Ouden Vogelstruys (In Ye Olde Ostrich Bird) where the idea of an annual Fête Gastronomique was born. See picture of that café http://www.mediapersoon.nl/.cm4all/iproc.php/voorbeelden/image.jpeg/scale_584_0;donotenlarge/

There were specialities as Merengue Máxima... :chef:

At RTL boulevard it was noted that all three monarchs who were present and who rule over the territory that was handed to Willem I after the Napoleontic wars, actually all descend from that same king. The presentor also remarked how the royals seem to know each other very well - not surprising of course- and that it seemed a meeting of old friends.

I wonder why the German president was invited, perhaps because parts of the country used to belong to the German Bund when the kingdom started? If it is for historical connections: the West used to be much 'closer' to Britain and it was Britain who actually took the initiative to unite the Northern and Southern Netherlands and make it a kingdom.

The German president gave a rather nice speech, and when he finished, he received a hug from the king and a kiss from the queen. The president also referred to the MH17 attack.

Yes, the Dukedom of Limbourg as well the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg were memberstates of the German Bund. The King of the Netherlands was also Duke of Limbourg resp. Grand Duke of Luxembourg. I am not sure that was the reason for the invitation of the German President.

Another reason can be that the Benelux and Germany are in the stream area of the Meuse river, which crosses Maastricht (Mosa ad Trajectam) but then the President of France should have been in Maastricht as well.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima attended the festival "Long Live the Club", a festival celebrating the right of freedom of assembly and association in Zwolle today, April 25:

I was impressed by the diamond earhangers worn by Princess Irene. Wowza, carat power!

I was impressed overall by the princess Irene. The most elegant presence of the evening.

No that was Princess Beatrix in my opinion, very, very glittering. The picture does no justice, on TV it was very glitzy and glammy and the citrine earrings and broche were impressive too.

Princess Irene looks really nice. She's always been the most attractive of Queen Juliana's daughters anyway, at least IMHO.
