The Kingdom of Ryukyu (Okinawa)

The Ryukyu Islands, chief of which is Okinawa, had been independent for many centuries before coming under Japanese rule in 1879. Prior to the 15th century, Okinawa was divided into three kingdoms: Hokuzan, Chuzan and Nanzan. In the 15th century, the Kingdom of Chuzan (in central Okinawa) under the Sho Dynasty conquered the entire island, thus unifying it under its rule for over 450 years. The anji were the nobility of Ryukyu.

The Sho lineage survives to this present day, with Sho Mamoru as head of the house and senior direct descendant of the last king Sho Tai.

After WWII the islands were occupied by American forces, but returned to Japanese rule in 1972. The Okinawans are a culturally distinct group, seen as an intermediary between Chinese and Japanese historically.

The Okinawan Kimono, known as the Bingata, was once wore by the members of the Ryukyuan Royal Family. But now, it is only used as a costume for the Traditional Okinawan slow-moving Dance called Yotsudake.

Beautiful ! Do you know anything about the former Royal Family of Ryukyu today ? I know the last King of Ryukyu was created as a marquess in the Meiji Era.

It really depends on what exactly you want to know. Considering that the dynasty dates back around 1500 years, you´d probably better go get yourself a graduate program, if you literally need "every key point".
But maybe you´d like to make a start here and here. Regarding history, there is, for example, Jerrold M. Packard´s "Sons of Heaven: A Portrait of the Japanese Monarchy" and for the time after 1945:"The People's Emperor: Democracy and the Japanese Monarchy, 1945-1995" (Harvard East Asian Monographs) by Kenneth J. Ruoff.

Besides, there is a lot of info to be found in the threads of this forum.
