She is who she is and there's not much point pretending to potential sponsors that she isn't. Her birth has given her name recognition and public awareness beyond her field of endeavour. That makes her very marketable. If she changed her name to Jane Smith she'd still be the daughter of the Princess Royal and granddaughter of the Queen. The alternative solution to this "issue" would be for her to decline sponsorships and/or take them cut-price to her market value. Why should she deliberately sell herself short?

We really can't answer that question but we can look at the sponsorships that other equestriennes who have won what she has won and other sportsmen and women who have been the BBC Sportsperson of the Year have received. How do her sponsorships compare say to Freddie Flintoff, who was the BBC Sportsperson of the Year the year before Zara? What about the year after - Joe Calzaghe?

What sort of sponsorhips does Nicholas Touzaint have (he was the Eventing Champion both before and after Zara)?

If she is getting considerably more than these people then yes her royal connection is a factor but if not then she is getting there on her sporting ability, surely.

I don't know what these other people are getting. I am simply pointing out that we might be making an assumption that it is because she is a good looking granddaughter of the monarch and that alone rather than really looking at genuine comparisons to determine whether that connection is the reason she is getting this sponsorhip.

Personally I feel sure that some of the sponsorship is because she is the granddaughter of The Queen but that a lot is because she is darned good at what she does on a horse.

Naturally, that's true. It's not only about her ability but also about her name. Zara is famous for both, being the Queen's granddaughter and an accomplished rider. And it's probably more her name what helps getting her these deals in a sport that is notoriously short of money, rather than the title of a world champion she achieved.

As long as there is no "Anna-Kurnikowa situation", achieving zero in sport but getting lots of ad deals because of looks or relatives etc I don't have a problem with Zara's sponsorship deals as she has done her part to earn them.

As the European Champion, regardless of her of her family connections, she would have been offered a very good sponsorship, whether corporate or private. In North America, there are many private sponsors such as the Singer Sewing Machine heiress (Jane Forbes Clark), the Dana Auto parts heiress (Sandra O'donnell) whose family owns the patent on the automobile axel, The Von Heiddegers (Kiehls), the Southerns (CN Rail) who will sponsor a top rider, or underwrite a competition. Zara earned every sposorship euro by working every day of her whole life to get where she is. While she has been lucky with her horses, just remember that the horses neither know nor care who her Grandmother is.

Here in the states...

It really is tough to gauge the impact of a sponsorship deal. The championship winners often have to out pay those who will pay more year after year...leaving everyone in a bargaining game of sorts. So, if Zara has more sponsors/money coming from her achievements, because she is a World Champion, than others, it is likely because of her marketability. Zara can sell these companies probably better than anyone...it's up to her to make the decision of who is a legit sponsor for herself.

You guys seem to have the wrong end of the stick as to how equestrian sponsors work. A major sponsor such as Range Rover would only sponsor someone who is European Champion/AGA Rider of the Year/Olympic medalist. Zara, by virtue of being the European Champion, as opposed to her Mother's daughter, earned the sponsorship. Zara delivered the European Championship in what is arguably the most difficult and dangerous equestrian disciple. No one handed them to her because of her family.

I agree, I think it is both. I don't know if it is Zara exploiting her royal connection, more likely the sponsors are doing that. Would William Fox Pitt receive any coverage if Land Rover were his sponsor, I doubt it!

There are many very talented riders who simply drop off the circuit because they cannot find the sponsors to enable them to continue, if they had the same financial deals, they, not Zara might have been champions.

With one of her top horses dead, another with continuing injury and so far no rising star, I was surprised that the sponsorship has continued, that does then beg the question of do they want her as a good rider or as the Queens granddaughter.

I've been away from here, picking up riding, and learning from others who compete in the various horse sports.

From what I've seen, Zara is pretty respected by all types of riders in Britain and the U.S. not just the wealthy.

I just wrote a blog post about Zara and her eventing sponsorships on The Royal Forums blog http://www.theroyalforums.com/5670-z...p-controversy/ and like to know what you think of it.

They come from opposite ends of the social spectrum.
Zara Phillips is the world eventing champion and a member of the royal family, with big money sponsors and powerful contacts behind her.

Zara Phillips blamed her horse Ardfield Magic Star for her lacklustre performance at the Badminton Horse trials claiming he was too tense to look at ease during the dressage section.

I am sure that she is still grieving for her favourite horse but it is not good form to blame your "tools".
Perhaps she will be able to make him feel more relaxed in future.

A competition like this is stressful enough, so one can
understand her reaction, she could of course have
chosen other words than these

Here are the pics from today:

Badminton Horse Trials at Badminton on May 9, 2009 in Acton

The country-country phase didn't go so well today for Zara Philips in the Badminton Horse Trials. She had to retire both of her horses from the competition: Ardfield Magic Star and Toytown.

Better luck next time, Zara.
