Wonderful pictures with Zara and the horse! I wonder what World Cup they are meaning here, I guess they mean she wants to qualify for riding in the World Cup and then tour with them and earn points and all that. The World Cup finals in dressage are being held in Las Vegas this weekend! :)

As her father and mother competed for Britain at the Olympics (father in 1972 and mother in 1976) in the three day event team I have always assumed that that is what Zara would be doing. That event of course involves dressage, cross country and showjumping over three days.

As the first lot of photos were from a dressage event and the next lot come from a cross country event I am more convinced that what she is competing in is called a Three Day Event.

It is a combination of the main equestrian skills but over three days on the one horse.

Day 1 is dressage (sometimes at the Olympics this stage takes two days)
Day 2 is cross country
Day 3 is showjumping

The person and horse with the best accumulated score (lowest total actually) over the three events is declared the winner.

Points in dressage are judged by experts sitting at various vantage places around the dressage square; Cross country points are a combination of time (outside the allowed time limit costs points) and penalty points for things like having a horse refuse a jump; in the showjumping there are penalty points for going overtime, knocking down jumps and refusing a jump.

Generally Three Day Eventers are all rounders who do not specialise in one of the three main events specifically - a bit like a medlay swimmer or decathlon/heptathlon athlete.

Equestrian is also the only major sport in which men and women compete equally against each other.

Royal patron for Kiwi charity

From www.stuff.co.nz
A charity dedicated to helping people in wheelchairs walk again has been given the royal stamp of approval with Zara Phillips becoming its overseas patron.

Ms Phillips – the Queen's granddaughter – has agreed to take on her first patronage role by becoming the face of CatWalk Trust.

The trust was set up by former international equestrian Catriona Williams who has been in a wheelchair since a horse riding accident in 2002.

Mrs Williams, based in Masterton, said launching the trust and securing equestrian Ms Phillips as a patron had been "pretty exciting".

The idea for a trust came about when friends said they would like to raise money for Mrs Williams' treatment.

"But I just thought why not raise money for everyone in chairs, not just me. So, we thought: let's set up a trust dedicated to research and information."

It is hoped CatWalk will raise money for research into a cure for spinal cord injuries.

Mrs Williams said she was delighted Ms Phillips, who just missed out on a place in the British Olympic equestrian team to Athens, had agreed to support the trust and credited veteran equestrian Mark Todd for helping to convince her.

"We thought she would be just perfect: young, funky, gorgeous and talented. So we asked Mark if he would call her up and ask her to consider it and she said yes. It's very exciting."

As a tetraplegic, Mrs Williams said her ultimate goal was to walk and dance again. "I don't believe it's finite. I'm sure there's a cure out there and it's just a matter of time before we break the code."

Since the accident Mrs Williamson has undergone radical alternative treatment in the United States at the Project Walk centre, made famous by actor Christopher Reeve who was paralysed after falling off a horse.

With help from friends and family, she has continued the Project Walk exercises at home and had gained "a huge amount of strength". She could now swim 12 lengths on her own and ride a horse.

"Nothing gets done by sitting around. You've got to keep moving and using the muscles."
Ms Phillips – who was once romantically linked to All Black Caleb Ralph – is to visit New Zealand for a black-tie fundraising dinner on June 23.

Mrs Williams was not sure whether she would bring her current boyfriend, England rugby player Mike Tindall.

In a press release, Ms Phillips said she was "extremely happy" to be involved in the trust.

CatWalk charitable trust launched

Another story on the same topic:
A new charitable trust with strong links to the New Zealand equestrian codes has been launched to fund research into spinal cord injury.

Adding spice to the efforts of the CatWalk Trust, royal grandchild Zara Phillips is to be the international face of the organization - her first ever patronage role – and will visit New Zealand later this year as part of her involvement.

Founded by former New Zealand showjumping and eventing international Catriona Williams, herself confined to a wheelchair following a riding accident in 2002, the CatWalk Trust is committed to helping find a cure for spinal cord injury.

Williams says CatWalk has been 10 months in the making.

“We are absolutely dedicated to raising the funds necessary to carry out this research and we’re delighted that Zara has agreed to be our international patron and help us achieve our goals.

“Zara is an avid and accomplished horse rider and has seen the devastating effects of spinal cord injury. She also loves New Zealand, and is looking forward to coming here for the CatWalk Trust Dinner in June.”

Williams says the Trust has an important mission.

“We plan to play a major role in helping the 70 plus New Zealanders affected by spinal cord injury every year to walk again,” she says.

Zara, the second child of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, says she was keen to be involved with the CatWalk Trust when she heard about it from friend and New Zealand Olympic gold medallist Mark Todd.

“The CatWalk Trust’s cause is a very good one and they have my full support. I am extremely happy to be involved and I’m looking forward to spending time in New Zealand to help raise funds for it,” she says.

While a number of New Zealand based organisations provide valuable rehabilitative support to those with spinal cord injuries, the CatWalk Trust believes there is an on-going need for research funding generated in New Zealand.

And with a high number of spinal cord injuries occurring in the sporting arena, the Trust is receiving major support from the sports, racing and equestrian fraternities.

“New Zealand based patrons include a number of sporting greats – Sir Brian Lochore, Dion Nash, Aaron Slight and Lance O’Sullivan – and we are extremely grateful for their support,” Williams says.

The 23 June black tie fundraising dinner attended by Zara Phillips is expected to earn a substantial sum for the Trust through the auction of a range of unique and high value items.

High profile sponsors of the dinner include Cathay Pacific (who will fly Zara Phillips to New Zealand) and Sir Patrick Hogan, who has provided a service fee to super sire Zabeel.

Funds raised will pay for research into finding a cure for spinal cord injuries. Dr. Leanne Parker of Burwood Hospital’s spinal unit is the Trust’s medical advisor.

“We know the research will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars so we’ll just continue to raise funds until there’s a cure,” says Catriona. The trust’s website is www.CatWalk.org.nz
