So far, all leading German papers have articles on their websites and I'm sure we'll see them in TV today and tomorrow. This is fairly unusual for a presentation of a foreign country in Germany! So it worked what the government wished for - the GREAT Britain tour found a lot of media interest, especially as Beatrice spoke a little bit of German at the press conference.

But how disappointed some journalists are that the York girls so far did not wear hats... I say: good for them!

Thanks for heads up on the coverage by German press, Kataryn! :flowers:

I thought Beatrice made a lovely speech.
Both girls looked calm and composed and, in my opinion, represented Britain really well.

I thought it funny that the papers mention that Ernst August jr., the Heirediary prince of Hanover will be present tomorrow and write that the palace was inhabited by George I. whose descendants Beatrice and Eugenie will be there, but no mentioning that of course EA jr. is a descendant as well (and after his father the most senior male-line one to boot!)...

What a pity that we aren't seeing they more often as representatives of the United Kingdom. They are so lovely.

I personally would've love to see them as official working royals but that's just not the way it is but Beatrice & Eugenie will be doing charity work, opening hospitals and doing great things so we will get a chance to see that.

Very nice pictures indeed.

I'm very surprised and positively so how much dignity, seriousness and friendliness Beatrice was able to convey with her speech. She did it so well, Britain can be proud of their new, lovely ambassadoress. Both girls today really grew on me!

I agree Beatrice did very well. She came across as a very warm and likeable young lady. They can be proud of her.

If it's an official visit the government should be paying for it but if the government are not paying for it because they think the taxpayers would object to funding the trip, which I'm sure most of them would, then why ask them to go? The PM is hardly going to ask them to go and then ask them to pay for it themselves which makes me believe that they volunteered for this or were volunteered by their father.

The interest in, and success of today's events has taken people by surprise.

These 2 girls could take a lot of pressure off Catherine at a difficult time - just an idea. Whether it is what the BRF would want, I'm not sure.

There is no conspircy here. Someone came up with the idea (the GREAT Campaign with the British Embassy in Berlin, I should think) because they thought they would be suitable and it would give the campaign publicity.
They would then check it out with London, who say ok but would they do it? They check with the Royals - who are happy to help and have approval to do it.

But this is not offical - it cannot come from the Royal budget. So the cost is split Berlin embassy put them up, escort them about, taxi them around and Andy says I'll pay for the fare.

I think he was happy to help but the PM would not have said yes if HMQ did not approve.

And it is good publicity for all concerned.

They are basically doing what the Michael's of Kent have always done which is basically doing royal work but paying for the expenses themselves as they are not required to do so in the way prince Charlie's family do. The Kent's have been accused of doing it over the years because they liked the prestige of doing the same things as the official royals whilst they argued they only wanted to help. I suspect it's been a bit of both and I think that's also the case here.

They are basically doing what the Michaels of Kent have always done which is carrying out royal work but paying for it themselves as they are not required to do so in the way Prince William, for example, is. The Kent's have been accused of doing it over the years because they liked the prestige of doing the same things as the official royals whilst they argued they only wanted to help. I suspect it's been a bit of both and I think that's also the case here.

Actually they're not really doing what the Kent's have been doing and whilst Princess Michael might have stuck around in the lime light for "prestige" her husband is a different matter.

I don't see what your issue is here really? They're doing work to give Great Britain some publicity, Andrew and the Berling Embassy paid for it, the government asked them to do. No taxpayer involvement (there wouldn't have been anyway), they haven't broken anything, their mother hasn't come along. It has been announced that this will not be the start of future royal engagements, which is expected considering the girls are in their 20s and their older cousin aren't even pitching in that often. Where's the harm?

I was pleased with the video I saw about Beatrice and Eugenie's trip to Berlin. Princess Beatrice made a good speech and both young women were well-dressed and pleasant. I wouldn't mind seeing more of them at these sorts of events.:flowers:

Beatrice looks stunning in that green dress. :)

It's not an official visit. Yet pics have been posted by BP on Gallery

Such a double standard! Grrr.

it is an official visit on behalf of HM's Government. it isnt an official royal visit. :flowers:

They are doing what I expected them to do. They will have their own careers but they will be doing charity work and possibly doing some traveling. If enough funds are raised, Eugenie will official open a hospital ward in her name. Princess Beatrice is an Ambassador for Children in Crisis and is involved with Springboard for Children, a charity working in socially and economically disadvantaged areas alongside school children who struggle to read and write. As we know Bea suffered from Dyslexia and she's also involved with The Teenage Cancer Trust.

Last year, Beatrice became royal patron of York Musical Society. Also last year, Princess Eugenie became royal patron of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital's Redevelopment Appeal. So the girls will be doing engagments but not really on the big official side as the rest of the royal family.

're 20 something year old daughters going out/ being seen out with their 50 something yo mums.

I (aged in my 50s) quite often go out with my 20 (this year) yo daughter, just as I go out with my 80+yo mum-in-law, just as I also do with my (mid-20s) sons...rather normal, pedestrian family behaviour I would have thought..

Great job by both Beatrice and Eugenie today. I think Beatrice spoke beautifully. Frankly, with William and Catherine being so adamant about being more "private" than "public" for the next few years, I think that Beatrice and Eugenie should be used more often in an official capacity.

They are royal-born and bred, well-educated, attractive, and well-spoken ... can't get much better than that!

The problem is that they aren't needed or wanted as full-time royals so they need to have full-time jobs. That means that they have to do royal duties in their leave time - as happened this time but doing this sort of thing is hardly 'holiday time' so not relaxing and preparing to work hard again for the people who are paying her, and that isn't the British public or government.

I think that this shows that William and Kate need to realise that it is time for them to forget about trying to be a private couple and realise that with the privileged lives they live they have responsibilities to represent their nation.

Well done Ladies!!! Well done indeed!!

My only quibble, and leave it to the DM to show the picture, was that one picture of Bea at the table w/the kids colouring/drawing and when she's leaning forward...We get a wee bit more than we should thanks to the neckline. Which is a shame because it looked incredable on her the rest of the time, but that one time and...A shame.

As for the hat...She was asked about it by a kid, so what else is she going to do? I've actually thought that Beatrice has handled herself regarding that entire mess w/great maturity and dignity over something that is going to follow her from now till time's end. She knows it and I respect her for how she continues to handle it.

I really hope the way TRH have handled themselves will give them more chances to be able to do things like this. As someone else said, they could really help to take some stress off of Kate right now. They really are proving to be two more jewels in the Crown. :)

^^You want William to leave in the middle of his RAF contract to be a full time royal?

How is Beatrice and Eugenie's trip to Germany shows that William and Kate needs to become full time royal now?

William is not 'in the middle' of an RAF contract - he is about to come to the end of his current term and has to make up his mind within weeks as to whether he is going to continue. It is time to leave the military for William and start to take some of the load off his grandparents. He can't expect his 64 year old father to do more than he is doing so it is time for him to accept his responsibilities.

The very fact that the PM asked Beatrice and Eugenie - a couple of girls who from all reports aren't wanted as working royals by their uncle or their cousin - shows that it is time for William and Kate to stop hiding in Wales and start actually working as royals. It is totally unfair to ask them to do this sort of think in their holiday time - as Beatrice had to do - use some of her leave time for this.

Beatrice and Eugenie are good hearted girls but their future isn't in promoting Britain or doing public engagements - William and Kate's is.

William hasn't been hiding in Wales he has been working in the RAF you seem to forget Prince Charles and Andrew had military careers for a long time too. William isn't the next in line he is the next, next in line that is an awful long time to do Royal duties fulltime. He has also done this with with the consent of the Queen and his father. They seem fine with him having some sort of normal life before having to commit fully to public duty. Don't forget there is no retirement age for a King or Queen I think it's great William and Kate have had the chance to have their own lives. Nothing wrong with that. Why people think Beatrice and Eugenie should be fulltime working members of the RF is a little puzzling. What about Peter and Zara they don't have titles but they have the same Grandmother? The public seem to be telling the RF they want it cut down the Queen and Prince Phillip are now the only 2 on the civil list. The Queen pays for everyone else carrying out their duties why on earth would she want to add another two? Charles will be King and he will do things his way the whole we have never heard anything official about it being cutdown is true but it has been around for years never been denied by anyone and is a constant. Charles is the one who will have to pay so I understand why he wouldn't be inviting Beatrice and Eugenie into that lifestyle. Besides Beatrice and Eugenie have both said they want careers and don't want to be fulltime working Royals anyway. It does seem to be Andrew pushing for it at least that is the drama the press are creating.

The quote about the discussing economics is back in one of the reports done on what they will be doing. The Government chose them but won't be giving them any money Andrew is footing the travel bill and Berlin is putting them up so to speak. That is why many are wondering about them being chosen and you have to admit it is a little odd that they want them to represent them but they won't pay for them to go. Andrew doesn't have the best rep and that is because of the way he handled that job. Airmiles Andy didn't exactly endear himself. It will be up to the girls to show they are straight and will work hard without making the same errors their father did. I do think someone else could have done just as a good job as they could. Fashion like it or not is always talked about what the Queen wears what Anne wears and rewears and the girls have both had major blunders over the years and many do remember what they wore to William and Katies wedding. So far they are doing well although the shot of Beatrice leaning over in such a low cut dress was of course picked up and shown. Bea will learn from it and next time she won't wear something so low cut. It's funny I'm in Oz and I get that the Civil list is now only the two but it seems many people are still very confused and are constantly saying what leeches everyone is. I don't get that I also don't think they understand what the RF do for the country. It just wouldn't be the same but it does have to change and the RF themselves seem to understand that. I have no idea how it's going to work but I can't see everyone just stopping I think they will need to carry on but it won't be with Beatrice and Eugenie in an official capacity and if they are fine with that so should everyone else. It's also not fair if they are working on careers to stop to do an engagement that takes time away from their real job. It isn't fair on them or the people working with them.

Beatrice looks stunning in that green dress. :)

It was a nice dress and she is a good public speaker. However to dress is just too low cut for the setting. Princess Eugenia also looked very nice.
