Royal courtiers are caught in the middle of a battle of wills between the Queen and Prince Philip over what to do for his 90th birthday.

Her Majesty is understood to want ‘something special’ while Philip – in typically modest fashion – doesn’t want much fuss for the milestone birthday next June.

‘There is a bit of a battle going on,’ says a Palace aide.

Once can understand the conflict. There economic environment is pretty dismal, and this is probably just not the time to have a party for 600 people, or for a large national celebration, however momentous the occassion.

I think the solution may well be a service of thanksgiving at St George's, and a gathering of close friends and family, including the other European royals, at a private dinner / ball at Windsor.

The Queen will name Cunard’s new liner, the Queen Elizabeth, it has been announced.

On 1st September 2010 Cunard Cruise Lines officially confirmed that Her Majesty, The Queen will be naming Cunard's new ship. The ceremony will be held in Southampton on Monday 11 October 2010 before the Queen Elizabeth 2,092 passenger ship sets sail for her maiden voyage to the Canary Islands. The Queen Elizabeth has also been the Godmother for the now retired Queen Elizabeth II in 1967 and Cunard's flagship Queen Mary II in 2004.

This is touching.. the painting isn't that great but...

Perhaps this is one area both father and son dabble in.. Phil in oils and Charles in watercolors.

As bad as Philip's painting is.. its a whole lot better than he is with words sometimes.

It isn't bad at all, nor he is bad with words. But each to their own. Prince Philip has also designed the windows of the chapel at Windsor after the fire.

Many people said that it's ugly, but I think that if it had being painted by a famous artist, they would say it's a masterpiece.

I think DoE is quite talented. We must remember that "talent" is subjective. I would hang it over my fireplace. Now if you want to talk about ugly, cast your mind to the monumental hoax perpetrated on the art world by the "talent" of the likes of Picasso.

Picasso's work is something people either like or loathe. Personally I think it is junk and if I had one I would burn it as rubbish. I think all of that sort of painting belongs on the garbage tip - but I also recognise that some people see it as art. It isn't a matter of knowing about him but of what people like to look at or dislike. I like the painting Philip did of his wife eating breakfast.

Agree with Iluvbertie. I liked the painting Philip did. It's easy on the eyes and pleasant to look at. Picasso's work is undoubtedly brilliant...but it's so ugly! At least to me, it is.

I couldn't agree more with the comment's about Picasso. If I had talent I would prefer a thousand times to make something like the DOE, i'd actually put it up on a wall in my house. Picasso, well I appreciate his work as I appreciate all art, but it's not pleasant to my eyes to put it mildly. This painting by DOE is lovely, it's different, more intimate obviously, than any other painting of the queen probably. I would love to see it in person.

Prince Philip has called in experts from Italy to help him establish a truffle plantation at Sandringham.
The Duke of Edinburgh has been desperate to set up a one-acre ‘truffiere’ since 2007. He even spent £5,000 on special truffle-impregnated trees but they failed to produce.
Now specialists Giorgio Remedia and Gianluigi Gregori from Acqualagna in central Italy have been called in.
