I read Kent was put forward because he was more popular and more seemingly able to handle the stress of being monarch (we all know about his drugs and affairs now, but that was hushed up then) than York and Gloucester, not because he had a son. In the end, of course, hereditary principle won out.

You're welcome, Tatiana!

Kelly, I'd heard that too, about doubts whether the Dukes of York or Gloucester would have been considered to be up to the job, but the people in a position to decide whether to try and promote the Duke of Kent as the next monarch would have been aware of his problems, even if the general public wasn't.

I assume that even if the rumours were true, it would have done more damage to the monarchy to not go with the next in line; once you set the precedent of being able to pick and choose, you might almost do away with a hereditary head of state anyway.

ROYAL WEDDING FEVOR GRIPS BRITAIN

The excitement is building for a Gisborne family who have packed their bags and are heading to London for a royal wedding.

Gary Lewis, a former shearer from Gisborne, is preparing to wed British royal Lady Davina Windsor at Kensington Palace on Saturday.

His family left the country on Monday where they will rub shoulders with several senior royals. But Lewis told his family not to divulge any details about the wedding. "It's all in respect for Gary, so we have to respect his wishes," his aunt Lillian Horsefall said.

Lewis met Lady Windsor, who is 20th in line to the throne, during a surfing holiday in Bali. She is regarded as a rebel who shuns publicity.

The pair lived a quiet life in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn for several months before they became engaged.

The wedding will have all the pomp and ceremony of a royal event, albeit on a smaller scale. The family are among 70 invited guests.

From Hello!

Lady Davina marries Maori Surfer

2 AUGUST 2004

The Royal Family welcomed its first Maori on Saturday when Lady Davina Windsor walked down the aisle with Gary Lewis. The 26-year-old royal married the former sheep-shearer after a four-year romance.

Davina, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, met her Kiwi beau in Indonesia in 2000. The pair decided on an understated wedding at Kensington Palace, attended only by close family and friends. "They just wanted a really low-key intimate affair," said a royal aide.

Gary, a keen surfer, is described as a "renovator" by the papers in his home country. The 33-year-old originally hails from Gisborne on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. His father was a champion sheep-shearer in the Eighties, while his mother worked as maid. The handsome builder also has an 11-year-old son from a previous relationship.

Davina meanwhile grew up in an 11-bedroom apartment at Kensington Palace. The pretty royal, who is 20th in line to the throne, prefers to keep a low profile and does not carry out any official royal engagements. Her parents are said to be "delighted" with their new son-in-law and have given the happy couple their blessings.

The Earl and Countess of Ulster don't look happy. I hope it's just an unfortunate photo and not a symptom of anything.

Is lady d financially sound?I heard somewhere she had never worked. Living down under would be cheaper than in UK if her husband is not rich.

Is it just me or is Lady Davina's husband really handsome. Lucky girl! In the picture of The Duchess and Gary's father, are those Gary's brother's behind him? And where exactly can I meet them? New Zealand perhaps?

Top Honour for Mandela

By Peter Archer, PA Court Correspondent

Nelson Mandela today collected his latest honour when he was invested by the Duke of Gloucester as a Bailiff Grand Cross of the Order of St John.

The 86-year-old former President of South Africa received his insignia – an eight-pointed cross – at a ceremony at St James’s Palace, London.

The Order of St John, headed by the Queen, is an historic Christian charity connected with the St John Ambulance. The Duke of Gloucester is the Order’s Grand Prior.

Mr Mandela’s honour is the highest the Order can bestow.

The Order’s secretary general, Andrew Gough, said: “It is with enormous pleasure that we bestow this honour upon Mr Mandela in recognition of his dedicated services to the work of the Order in South Africa and beyond.”

Craig Troeburg, from the Order’s South African organisation, added: “Nelson Mandela has exercised with distinction both the leadership of the Republic of South Africa and his subsequent position as a champion of peace.

“He has demonstrated integrity, loyalty and devotion to the benefit of mankind, not only in South Africa but internationally, which has resulted in support for the Order.”

Mr Mandela is a member of the Order in the Priory of South Africa and, in 2003, was promoted by the Queen to the highest grade within the Order.

He was first appointed to the Order as a Knight in 1996.

Around the world, there are five Orders of St John which run numerous programmes, ranging from ambulance corps to schemes for young people, care for the elderly, the disabled, children and the homeless.

They also provide first-aid training, and disaster and humanitarian relief worldwide.

The British Order of St John is an Order of Chivalry of the Crown.

Reaffirmed in Britain in the mid-19th century by Queen Victoria, the Order traces its origins back 900 years to the Knights Hospitaller who cared for the sick in Jerusalem.

Mr Mandela already holds the high honour of Order of Merit which was awarded to him by the Queen.
