Today, The Queen is going to Margaret Thatcher's 80th. Why can I not get the image of the Queen and Margaret Thatcher sitting in party hats with a glass of sherry, singing, "Down at the Old Bull and Bush" accompanied by former Tiller-Girl, Betty Boothroyd on the Piano and Prince Philip on the spoons.

What a historic event and meeting, The Queen herself at Baroness Thatcher's 80th, I'm still a bit stunned by this! :) Great to see, and I heard that President Bush also called to congratulate Thatcher. The Queen looked lovely, this outfit looks wonderful on her, very festive and elegant!
Here's a link to the guest list at The Guardian: http://politics.guardian.co.uk/conse...591677,00.html Here are some watermark-free pictures from AP & Reuters via Yahoo News.

It's a very very rare event. Lady Thatcher is a stickler for tradition and despite being rather frail, insisted on curtseying to the Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Alexandra. She used to drop the lowest curtseys ever seen at court - now she can just manage a little bob.
I personally didn't like the outfit the Queen wore which was more cocktail than evening wear. Speaking to a friend who was actually there, Margaret actually cried when the Queen arrived. She was so touched that she'd made it! I was impressed that Bush phoned her too. A nice way of saying thankyou to the grand dame of British politics! |

I'm glad the Queen made the effort to attend since it seemed to have meant so much to Lady Thatcher.
From those photos in Sara's post, it seems that some people were wearing some rather bizarre outfits. |

HM wore that outfit for 2 events that day. is it the reason why the dress looks more cocktail like? she wore it for the itv anniversary reception.

think this (from a link of sara to the telegraph) is soo funny:Among the guests was Lord Archer, the former vice chairman of the Conservative Party, with his wife Lady Archer. Before they entered, the couple were stopped by a policeman and asked for their invitation.:p
re the clothes: cilla black is according to imbd 62 years old and you can almost see her underwear and shirley bassy, strange to wear boots and they are unflatteringly short. Like the kind interaction between the queen and maggie. In the end that is all that matters. Quote:

Cilla Black caused the Queen great amusement at a recent Royal Variety Performance. Cilla, Barbara Windsor and Paul O'Grady (in his guise as Lily Savage) all performed a number from Gypsy. Cilla had hearts on her breasts, bum and indeed - front bottom. Complete with a basque and a God knows what else, the hearts lit up as she sang - the Queen was apparantly chuckling like mad up in the Royal Box.
