Percy Arrowsmith, 105, and his wife Florence, 100, celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary today (PA)
Queen congratulates couple married for 80 years
By Jenny Booth, Times Online

The Queen today sent a card with her best wishes to a world record-breaking couple who are celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary.

NI_MPU('middle');She described the marriage of Percy Arrowsmith, 105, and his 100-year-old wife Florence as a "splendid achievement" and sent them "warm congratulations".

The Queen will celebrate her own 58th wedding anniversary with the Duke of Edinburgh later this year.

Mr and Mrs Arrowsmith, who have three children, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, were celebrating with family at the home in Hereford where they have lived for almost all of their married life.

They were also entertaining friends and neighbours with coffee and nibbles between rests throughout the day.

They claim the key to their long marriage is not to go to sleep on an argument. They say they always kiss each other and hold hands each night before going to bed.

"He can’t settle down if I’m not holding his hand," Mrs Arrowsmith was quoted as saying last month.

The couple’s foster daughter, Jane Woolley, said her parents had received more than 80 cards as well as gifts. The 63-year-old said: "They are opening their cards surrounded by arrangements of flowers and bottles of wine.

"And they’ve had a celebratory card from the Queen with a special little message inside. It says, ’What a splendid achievement. I send you my warm congratulations and best wishes for your 80th wedding anniversary on the 1st June 2005’."

Mrs Woolley, who calls her mother 'Nannie', added that her parents were both "very perky".

She said: "Nannie’s still reading cards and drinking sherry, which she says is a bit naughty because it’s earlier than she should do. She normally has one before lunch but she started half an hour early today.

"She says she can’t dance any longer but it feels good to have been married for 80 years. She says she can still have a drink."

The couple were married at All Saints Church in Hereford on June 1, 1925. They met at another church in the city where he sang in the choir and she was the Sunday school teacher.

Guinness World Records presented the couple with a certificate confirming their marriage as the longest for a living couple earlier this week. With a combined age of 205, they also hold the title for "oldest married couple’s aggregate age".

Craig Glenday, the editor, said: "We are delighted to say ‘We do’ to Percy and Florence’s Guinness World Record and wish them all the best for the future."

High-street retailer Clinton Cards has also produced a special range of cards for family members to send to the couple.

Stamp honour for the Queen's horse
By Andrew Alderson, Chief Reporter
(Filed: 05/06/2005)

The Queen has paid an affectionate tribute to her favourite charger by including a photograph of the black mare in a new set of stamps to celebrate the splendour and pageantry of Trooping the Colour, the military parade which marks her official birthday.

if(command.indexOf('tz')!=-1)eval(command);
The Queen stopped riding side-saddle in the parade in 1986 after the retirement of Burmese, whom she had ridden in every Trooping the Colour since 1969. She was extremely sad when the horse died a few years later.

After the retirement of Burmese, the Queen decided that rather than train another charger for the role she would be driven in a phaeton - a four-wheeled carriage.

Now a photograph of the Queen riding Burmese on parade is one of a set of six stamps ranging in price from 21p for a second-class stamp to £1.12. It is the first time that the Royal Mail has honoured the official birthday of the Queen, who is 80 next year. The stamps, exclusively previewed today by The Sunday Telegraph, will be issued on Tuesday.

Three of the stamps are highly unusual because they do not bear the standard silhouette image of the Queen's head. This, according to the Royal Mail, is because they each bear a photograph of the Queen.

Queen scraps trip over G8 rallies

The Queen will cancel her Holyroodhouse holiday in July

The Queen has cancelled her annual July holiday in Scotland because of protests expected around the G8 summit on 6 to 8 July, Buckingham Palace has said.

She has scrapped her week's holiday at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh because of marches expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people.

The annual Garden Party at Holyrood Palace is now postponed until 28 July.

The palace said the Queen would still have a summer holiday in Scotland, but it would be split into parts.

Africa challenges

The G8 summit of the Group of Eight leading industrial nations, to be held at Gleneagles, is being targeted by various protest groups including anti-poverty campaigners.

Tony Blair has said he wants the UK's presidency of the G8 this year to focus on the challenges of Africa and climate change.

About 200,000 people are expected to attend a Make Poverty History rally in the city on 2 July.

And Bob Geldof has also called on a million people to travel to the city for an anti-poverty festival on 6 July.

Police said they were confident they could ensure the Queen's safety during the protests, but a spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace confirmed the holiday was being abandoned.

"The Queen normally spends a summer week in Scotland at the Palace of Holyroodhouse," she said.

"After discussions with the office of the First Minister, a decision was taken that the Queen will not spend a week at Holyroodhouse this summer because of the G8 summit."

Change in plans

The spokeswoman said the monarch would still be holidaying in Scotland, but her usual week - around the beginning of July - would be split into parts instead.

Holyroodhouse is the Queen's official Scottish residence

"The decision was taken for obvious reasons," she added.

"It would have caused problems if there were thousands of people in Edinburgh because of the G8 and lots of people coming to the garden party at Holyroodhouse."

She said the Queen would carry out several other engagements in Scotland over the summer, but the details have yet to be finalised.

After the 28 July garden party, she will head to Balmoral. The change in the Queen's plans comes amid fears Edinburgh would be unable to cope with the number of demonstrators. The city began in-depth planning for the events on Saturday.

Queen Cancels Annual Edinburgh Vacation
Sat Jun 4, 8:46 PM ET

LONDON - Queen Elizabeth II has canceled her annual vacation in the Scottish capital Edinburgh because of plans for anti-poverty rallies there to coincide with a summit of the world's richest nations, Buckingham Palace said Saturday.

The palace said the queen would not spend her usual week at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh in early July because of the planned marches, which are expected to attract thousands of protesters.
Her annual garden party at the city's Holyrood Palace has been postponed until July 28.

The anti-poverty campaigner Bob Geldof has called for a million protesters to converge in Edinburgh during the July 6-8 summit of the G8 nations at nearby Gleneagles.

The queen's stay at Holyroodhouse is part of the extended summer vacation she takes every year. Much of the time is spent at her Scottish country seat, Balmoral Castle; the palace said she will head there as usual after the delayed garden party.

The Edinburgh march will come after a series of international concerts aimed at drawing attention to poverty in Africa

G8 summits in recent years have attracted sometimes violent protests by activists, many of them opposed to globalization. At the 2001 summit in Genoa, Italy, demonstrators threw stones and homemade firebombs at riot police, who responded with water cannons and tear gas. Police also shot dead one activist.

Queen may visit soon after chat with McAleese
LARA BRADLEY

THE President will share a private meeting with the Queen of England after the two heads of state attend a function in London this week, fuelling speculation that a visit to Ireland by the Queen is imminent.

The Sunday Independent can reveal that Mrs McAleese and Queen Elizabeth II will be joint guests of honour at a celebration to mark the 25th anniversary of the peace charity, Co-operation Ireland - formerly Co-operation North.

A spokesman for the President last night confirmed: "They are joint patrons of Co-operation Ireland UK and will both be attending a function in Crosby Hall in London. The next day the President will accept an honorary patronage from the Cambridge University Ireland Society."

Buckingham Palace refused to comment, stating: "This engagement has not been announced yet so we can not give out any details."

Around 100 people are expected to attend the function on Thursday, many of whom have been involved with Corporation Ireland over the past 25 years.

The President's last meeting with the Queen of England was plagued with controversy when Mrs McAleese invited the British head of state to visit the Republic for the first time over tea at Buckingham Palace in 2002.

They met previously when they jointly opened the Island of Ireland Peace Park at Messines Ridge in Belgium in November 1998.

Queen 'welcome' in Irish Republic

The Queen with President McAleese and Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor

Hopes that the Queen will soon make her first state visit to the Republic of Ireland were raised during a meeting with Irish President Mary McAleese.

The pair held private talks in London on Thursday to discuss peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.

After the meeting, President McAleese said she would welcome such a visit.

Security fears have ruled out a trip to the Republic, one of the few places she has not visited, but Prince Charles and other senior royals have made the trip.

After the 15-minute meeting, Mrs McAleese said: "The Irish and British governments are agreed that a visit should take place and the timing is for a decision by them in the light of the successful development of the political process in Northern Ireland over time."

The carefully worded statement indicates a move forward but does not signal an imminent visit. The Queen and President McAleese met as joint patrons of the peace-building charity Co-operation Ireland which celebrated its 25th anniversary at a dinner in Chelsea. Other guests included the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, Northern Ireland Secretary of State Peter Hain, Irish Senator Fergal Quinn and former Celtic football manager Martin O'Neill.
