Despite outbursts, Prince Philip is queen's 'strength and stay'
When Queen Elizabeth II turns 80 this week, Prince Philip will be, as always, by her side as lifelong consort and confidant, someone she calls her "strength and stay." http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060416...p_060416081401 |

Since the Queen's 80th birthday is today, just a reminder that events relating to that momentous event should be discussed in Queen Elizabeth's 80th Birthday Celebration 2006 thread, not here. Thanks.

HAS OUR QUEEN FAILED TO MAKE HER MARK ON HISTORY?
I'VE always felt warm towards the Queen. I don't specifically remember her succeeding to the throne in February 1952, but I clearly recall the day of her coronation 16 months later.

Despite hard image, Prince Philip is queen's loyal consort
LONDON (AFP) - As Queen Elizabeth II turned 80 in Windsor Castle, Prince Philip was, as always, at her side as lifelong consort and confidant. His reliable presence seems to belie his tabloid newspaper image as a callous man who has been a bully to family members and prone to uttering offensive or even racist remarks during the couple's travels abroad. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060421...p_060421154039

Prince Philip to visit Ireland
DUBLIN (AFP) - Prince Philip is to visit Ireland this week, the government said, renewing speculation about a historic first-ever visit by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II. The office of Irish President Mary McAleese said the queen's consort would be a guest of honour Wednesday at a ceremony in Dublin to mark the 21st anniversary of the Gaisce (presidential challenge for 15 to 25 year olds) awards and the 50th anniversary of his Duke of Edinburgh awards. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060425...l_060425191720

Prince Philip gets warm welcome from Irish president
DUBLIN (AFP) - President Mary McAleese welcomed Britain's Prince Philip to Ireland for a trip that has renewed speculation about a first-ever visit there by his wife Queen Elizabeth. The prince joined a youth ceremony for the 21st anniversary of Ireland's presidential youth awards programme and the 50th anniversary of his own Duke of Edinburgh scheme. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060426...l_060426140722
