The heir to the throne studied for four years at St Andrew's University
Prince William gains 2:1
2.38PM, Sat Jun 11 2005

Prince William achieved a 2:1 honours in his geography MA degree from St Andrews University, Clarence House has announced.

Britain's most famous undergraduate said last year that he was on track to get the upper second class honours in his geography MA (Master of Arts), providing his dissertation and final exams went well.

He did better than his father, the Prince of Wales, who received a lower second class honours from Trinity College, Cambridge, in history.

The Prince and hundreds of other students at the university accessed their degree results though a secure website.

The heir to the throne studied for four years at St Andrew's University but got off to an unsure start.

He originally signed up for history of art but then switched.

Prince William gets a 2:1 in his degree

Prince William has been awarded a 2:1 in his geography degree from St Andrews University, Clarence House has announced.

Prince William grew to love his time at St AndrewsBritain's most famous undergraduate said last year that he was hoping to get a 2:1 but said a lot depended on his 10,000-word dissertation on the coral reefs of Rodrigues.

A Clarence House spokesman said: "William got an upper second class honours. He's delighted. Everyone is absolutely delighted. His father's very proud."

The Prince, who celebrates his 23rd birthday later this month, had a somewhat rocky start to his life in the isolated Scottish town in Fife.

In his first term, he struggled to adjust but eventually settled down after switching his course from history of art to geography.

In the end, St Andrews became a haven where the locals grew used to having a royal pin-up around town.

William found a sanctuary away from the media, even sharing a house with girlfriend Kate Middleton.

With his university experience at an end and military training beckoning, William is preparing to fly to New Zealand to join the British Lions squad on their rugby tour.

During his stay on the islands, he will also carry out his first solo engagements on behalf of the Queen to celebrate the end of the Second World War - marking a new era of royal duties for the Prince.

William, who plans to sign up for the Army and join Sandhurst like his younger brother Prince Harry, has spoken about being "wary" of developing his public role too soon.

His father the Prince of Wales got a lower second class honours (2:2) from Trinity College, Cambridge, for his history degree.

He also swapped courses, having initially picked archaeology and anthropology.

Charles was the first heir to the throne to take a degree.

'William the Wise' as Prince's degree is crowning glory
PRINCE WILLIAM is expected to make history twice today, by sharing an official carriage with the Duchess of Cornwall and by gaining an upper second-class honours degree from St Andrews University, which would make him Britain’s brainiest royal.

The Prince and his stepmother will share the first barouche, an 18th-century landau formerly used by the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, during Trooping the Colour. It will be their first official procession together. In addition, it is widely expected that he will be awarded a 2:1 for his four-year geography MA.

NI_MPU('middle');The Prince, whose mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, left school with a CSE in domestic science, will be able to access his degree result through a secure university website from 9am — before the official procession. He will be sent written confirmation on Monday morning. He has said in the past that he was on track to get an upper second. It is understood that he learnt last week that his course work had been graded 2:1 and that his final result would depend on his dissertation and exams.

The Prince, 22, who is second in line to the throne, initially struggled to settle at St Andrews. At one point he even considered dropping out, but was persuaded to stay by his father. After switching courses from history of art to geography, he began to enjoy life as an undergraduate in the picturesque coastal town of Fife. For some of his four years at St Andrews he shared a house with Kate Middleton, his girlfriend. His father, the Prince of Wales, left Gordonstoun School, near Elgin, with six O levels and two A levels and was the first British heir to the throne to attend university.

With the exception of his own father, who also attended Gordonstoun, all royals before Charles, including his mother, the Queen, were taught at home by governesses.

Prince Charles left Trinity College, Cambridge, with a second-class degree (2:2) in history. Like his son, he also swapped courses, having initially chosen to study archaeology and anthropology.

Prince William’s uncle, the Earl of Wessex, also left Cambridge with a second-class degree, in history, from Jesus College. The Duke of York chose a military career over an academic one and spent 22 years in the Royal Navy.

Prince Harry appears to be following in his uncle’s footsteps, having recently scraped into Sandhurst with the minimum entrance requirement of two A levels.

Prince William had seven lectures a week in his final year and wrote his 10,000-word dissertation on the coral reefs of Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean. He will graduate on June 23, after which he is expected to travel to New Zealand to represent the Royal Family during the Lions rugby tour. While there he will represent the Queen at wreath-laying ceremonies to commemorate the end of the Second World War. <LI>Prince Harry was twice given a dressing down at Sandhurst this week. The first time he failed to stand up when senior officers walked past. Then on Thursday he was admonished while on the drill square practising for the “passing off the square” parade ROYAL RESULTS

Prince William gains 2:1 degree

Prince William studied for four years in Scotland

Prince William has achieved a 2:1 honours in his geography MA degree from St Andrews University, Clarence House has announced.

The announcement was made as the prince attended the annual Trooping the Colour with other members of the Royal Family.

William, 22, logged on to a secure internet site to find out his Master of Arts results on Saturday.

He did better than his father who received a lower second class honours in history from Cambridge.

Proud father

"William got an upper second class honours," a Clarence House spokesman said.

"He's delighted. Everyone is absolutely delighted. His father's very proud."

William, second in line to the throne, had earlier said he hoped to get a 2:1 but that a lot depended on his 10,000-word dissertation on the coral reefs of Rodrigues.

Throughout William's four-year degree the public has seen a limited glimpse of his student life in Scotland, including footage of him relaxing and pursuing his sporting interests.

Newspapers agreed to show restraint in their coverage of the prince to allow him to enjoy as normal a student life as possible.

Solo engagement

In interviews to mark his 21st birthday in June 2003, the prince said he had had initial doubts about staying at the university, but eventually settled down.

H also changed his degree from history of art to geography. William intends to join the Armed Forces, but will first travel to New Zealand for the Lions rugby tour and perform his first solo royal engagement. He will represent the Queen at a commemoration of the end of World War II.

Prince William beats his father's academic record
Sat Jun 11, 2005 3:28 PM BST

LONDON (Reuters) - Prince William has gone some way to restoring the royal family's academic reputation by earning a 2:1 honours degree in geography from St Andrews University in Scotland.

The result, announced on Saturday by William's press office, means he has overhauled his father, heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, who managed a lower second class honours degree in history from his time at Trinity College, Cambridge.

William's younger brother Harry decided not to study at university after leaving school with two A-levels in geography and art and is now training to be an army officer.

William is expected to join around 1,400 other students for a graduation ceremony at St Andrews later this month.

The 22-year-old prince celebrated his degree result by taking part in the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony in London to mark his grandmother the Queen's official birthday.

In most universities in the UK, an MA is a postgraduate degree like in the USA, but the old universities (Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews) grant MA degrees as the undergraduate degrees. I'm not sure about the other Scottish universities.

Degrees are awarded with three classes of honours (first, second, and third); because most students get second-class degrees, that class is split into two divisions; a 2:1 is the upper division of a second-class degree and is a very respectable result. First-class honours degrees are fairly rare, especially in arts subjects (as are third-class degrees), so Prince William did well. It's a result that would easily let him go on to do postgraduate work if he wanted to.

I agree. Congratulations! I've recently completed my degree too, so I know how hard he must have worked to be awarded with such a grade. Well done!!

Prince William Gets Master's in Geography

Sat Jun 11, 8:46 PM ET

LONDON - Prince William learned Saturday that he had achieved a master of arts degree in geography. The 22-year-old son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana logged onto the Internet to discover that he had received a 2:1 grade for his four-year course at St. Andrews University, Scotland.

A 2:1 denotes an upper second-class degree, a very respectable achievement.

The prince, who is second in line to the British throne, did better than his father, who received a 2:2, or lower second class degree for his honors degree in history at Trinity College, Cambridge.

"William got an upper second class honors (degree). He's delighted. Everyone is absolutely delighted. His father's very proud," said a spokesman for Charles's Clarence House office.

William said last year that he was hoping to get a 2:1 but a lot depended on his 10,000-word dissertation on coral reefs.

The prince, who turns 23 later this month, had a somewhat rocky start to his academic life in the isolated Scottish town in Fife.

In his first term, he struggled to adjust but eventually settled down after switching his course from history of art to geography.

St. Andrews became a haven for the prince, with the media largely adhering to his father's request that he be left alone during his studies. Locals grew used to having a royal around town.

William, who will graduate at the end of June, plans to sign up for military training at Sandhurst, the prestigious military academy south of London where his younger brother, Harry, began his studies last month.
