Wills acted as an usher at his old friend's wedding

6 JUNE 2005

It was a sight royal fans the world over have been longing for for quite some time. Prince William, with a broad smile on his face, standing side by side with Kate Middleton as the wedding march played in the background.

Those already anticipating the day Wills makes his vows will have to wait a little longer, though - he and his girlfriend were simply guests at the nuptials of two close friends. The second-in-line acted as an usher at the marriage of his chum Hugh van Cutsem to landowner's daughter Rose Astor.

With a light drizzle falling over the church in Burford, Oxfordshire, the 30-year-old groom escorted his fiancée, who wore an ivory gown with lace sleeves, into the church under an umbrella. Once inside, the couple made their vows in front of a who's-who of British society. Among those in attendance for the ceremony were advertising mogul Maurice Saatchi and banking heir Zac Goldsmith.

William's girlfriend of two years might have been forgiven for feeling a little awkward, since her beau's ex-girlfriend Jessica Craig was present too. Conspicuous by their absence, however, were Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, who likewise stayed away from the wedding of elder brother Edward van Cutsem to Lady Tamara Windsor after finding out they were to be seated separately.

Prince Harry wasn't able to make it either, as he is currently in the thick of combat training at Sandhurst. And it seems the young royal is feeling the strain of military life, because he has been forced to trade his army boots for trainers after developing painful blisters on his feet.

is this source trustworthy

from mail on sunday:

But is a Southern belle William's real love?

By SHARON CHURCHER and CAROLINE GRAHAM, Mail on Sunday 16:25pm 5th June 2005 Behind William and Kate's smiles at the wedding there was an undercurrent of uncertainty.

For as he approaches the end of his student days at St Andrews this month, William's own relationship with Kate has reached a crossroads and they do not know if they have a future together beyond university.

Despite their show of happiness, their relationship seemed devoid of the joyful bounce of Prince Harry and his girlfriend Chelsy Davy.

William has maintained he is too young to consider settling down and recently said he would not marry before he was 30. But a close university friend revealed the real reason behind his reluctance to commit to Kate: dazzling blonde Southern belle Anna Sloan, 22.

The Mail on Sunday has learned she is the girl who set herself apart from countless others by turning down William's offer of a date.

"He is tantalised by Anna," said the friend. "She is beautiful and brilliant and the girl who said 'No' to him. He actually cast his net in her direction before he went out with Kate but she rejected him. His chat-up line is, 'I'm the future King. Do you want to pull?' He really didn't think it would fail with Anna."

But fail it did when the wealthy student at Edinburgh University told him she just wanted to be friends. According to well placed sources, the thunderbolt of attraction William felt for Anna has never been matched by the relationship he has with Kate - a girl he values for her loyalty and discretion.

Though he has accepted that romance is not on the cards, an intriguing friendship has developed between the second in line to the throne and the charming girl from Tennessee. And it is based on a tragic bond. For both know the pain of losing a parent in a horrific accident and speculation about their families' personal lives in its wake.

Anna's father, George, was killed in a bizarre accident in which he shot himself out walking on his 360-acre estate. Although it was an accident, there were rumours that he had committed suicide because the farm wasn't making money and had staged the accident to protect Anna and her sister Wendy's financial future. His life insurance has left them extremely wealthy through a trust fund.

According to friends, a deep friendship has grown between William and Anna from that shared knowledge. Last August, William was one of a group of friends who visited Anna at the estate.

Now he has told friends he wants to include a trip to America to see Anna after he graduates, despite a hectic summer schedule. At her Nashville mansion, Anna's grandmother, Margaret Sloan, said: "Anna and the Prince have a very private friendship." Asked about the tragic bond between them, she said: "Anna does not want to discuss it. They are friends and that is all we have to say."

WILLS VISIT THE LAND OF PC PLUM

9 JUNE 2005

Having recently completed his finals at St Andrews University, Prince William is enjoying a well-earned break in The Hebrides. The second-in-line, along with several friends, has travelled to the Isle of Mull where he is now ensconced in a self-catering cottage.

Residents in the harbour town of Tobermory might be forgiven for feeling a little star-struck, but the royal visit is not their first brush with celebrity. Young TV fans will already be familiar with the village's pretty bungalows, as it was here that the popular children's series Balamory was filmed.

Wills is unlikely to join PC Plum and Josie Jump for any of their adventures, though, because he is intent on taking things easy until his graduation in two weeks' time. He and his chums were spotted chatting on the ferry from the Scottish mainland on Monday evening and they likewise turned heads when they visited a local pub to watch the British Lions play New Zealand team Taranaki on satellite TV.

Not everyone was aware of the 22-year-old's arrival, however. According to local reports, restaurant manager Hannah Haddock got quite a surprise when she noticed the future king was standing behind her in the queue at the town's grocery store. When the cashier asked whether they would be paying together, she could only smile and say: "No, separately will be fine."

1. The Prince is taking an early summer break following four years of study at Scotland's St Andrews University
2. Picturesque Tobermory is located on the Isle of Mull off the coast of Scotland

William and Camilla share carriage

The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince William will share a carriage in the Trooping the Colour procession on Saturday, royal aides said.

It is the first time that both William and Camilla, his stepmother, have ridden in the official procession.

They will share the first barouche - an 18th-century landau formerly used by the Queen Mother - with the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

William, 22, who is expecting his degree results on Saturday, famously crossed swords with the Earl when his uncle Edward's TV production company broke a media agreement and filmed him at university in St Andrews.

The Duke of York, with daughters Princess Beatrice, 16, and Princess Eugenie, 15, will follow behind in the second barouche with the Princess Royal's husband, Rear Admiral Timothy Laurence.

Prince William and Camilla will watch the Trooping the Colour parade from the window of the Major-General Office's overlooking Horse Guards.

Others in the carriage procession will join them at the vantage point favoured by the Queen Mother and where the Duke of Wellington's desk is kept.

Camilla is expected to appear on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony with the Queen and other senior members of the royal family to watch an RAF flypast following Trooping the Colour. The flypast will include the Typhoon Eurofighter aircraft for the first time. The RAF say the formation will fly at 280 knots - approximately 310mph - and will pass over the Palace at a height of 1,500ft at 1pm precisely. If the weather postpones the Trooping of the Colour ceremony to the afternoon, the flypast will take place at 5pm.

Nailbiting Time for William

By Laura Elston, PA Deputy Court Correspondent

Prince William gets his degree results tomorrow after spending four years studying at St Andrews University.

The second in line to the throne will be able to access his final grade online from 9am.

Britain’s most famous undergraduate said last year that he was on track to get an upper second class honours (2:1) in his geography MA (Master of Arts), providing his dissertation and final exams went well.

The Prince, who celebrates his 23rd birthday later this month, had a somewhat rocky start to his life in the isolated Scottish town in Fife.

In his first term, he struggled to adjust but eventually settled down after switching his course from history of art to geography.

In the end, St Andrews became a haven where the locals grew used to having a royal pin-up around town.

William found a sanctuary away from the media, even sharing a house with girlfriend Kate Middleton.

Tomorrow morning, the Prince and hundreds of other students at the university will be able to access their degree classifications though a secure website.

From Monday, they will also receive a confirmation letter by post.

With his university experience at an end and military training beckoning, William is preparing to fly to New Zealand, without Kate, to join the British Lions squad on their rugby tour.

During his stay on the islands, he will also carry out his first solo engagements on behalf of the Queen to celebrate the end of the Second World War – marking a new era of royal duties for the Prince.

William, who plans to sign up for the Army and join Sandhurst like his younger brother Prince Harry, has spoken about being “wary” of developing his public role too soon.

He will be one of about 1,400 St Andrews students who graduate in the town at the end of June.

His father the Prince of Wales got a lower second class honours (2:2) from Trinity College, Cambridge, for his history degree.

He also swapped courses, having initially picked archaeology and anthropology.

Charles was the first heir to the throne to take a degree.

The Earl of Wessex, who studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, was also awarded a 2:2.

William, who had seven lectures a week in his final year, wrote his 10,000 word dissertation on the coral reefs of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean.

Sounds as though he'd be better off sticking with Kate in that case.

'William the Wise' as Prince's degree is crowning glory
PRINCE WILLIAM is expected to make history twice today, by sharing an official carriage with the Duchess of Cornwall and by gaining an upper second-class honours degree from St Andrews University, which would make him Britain’s brainiest royal.

The Prince and his stepmother will share the first barouche, an 18th-century landau formerly used by the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, during Trooping the Colour. It will be their first official procession together. In addition, it is widely expected that he will be awarded a 2:1 for his four-year geography MA.

NI_MPU('middle');The Prince, whose mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, left school with a CSE in domestic science, will be able to access his degree result through a secure university website from 9am — before the official procession. He will be sent written confirmation on Monday morning. He has said in the past that he was on track to get an upper second. It is understood that he learnt last week that his course work had been graded 2:1 and that his final result would depend on his dissertation and exams.

The Prince, 22, who is second in line to the throne, initially struggled to settle at St Andrews. At one point he even considered dropping out, but was persuaded to stay by his father. After switching courses from history of art to geography, he began to enjoy life as an undergraduate in the picturesque coastal town of Fife. For some of his four years at St Andrews he shared a house with Kate Middleton, his girlfriend. His father, the Prince of Wales, left Gordonstoun School, near Elgin, with six O levels and two A levels and was the first British heir to the throne to attend university. With the exception of his own father, who also attended Gordonstoun, all royals before Charles.

Prince Charles left Trinity College, Cambridge, with a second-class degree (2:2) in history. Like his son, he also swapped courses, having initially chosen to study archaeology and anthropology.

Prince William’s uncle, the Earl of Wessex, also left Cambridge with a second-class degree, in history, from Jesus College. The Duke of York chose a military career over an academic one and spent 22 years in the Royal Navy.

Prince Harry appears to be following in his uncle’s footsteps, having recently scraped into Sandhurst with the minimum entrance requirement of two A levels.

Prince William had seven lectures a week in his final year and wrote his 10,000-word dissertation on the coral reefs of Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean. He will graduate on June 23, after which he is expected to travel to New Zealand to represent the Royal Family during the Lions rugby tour. While there he will represent the Queen at wreath-laying ceremonies to commemorate the end of the Second World War.
Prince Harry was twice given a dressing down at Sandhurst this week. The first time he failed to stand up when senior officers walked past. Then on Thursday he was admonished while on the drill square practising for the “passing off the square” parade ROYAL RESULTS

Prince Charles left Gordonstoun with six O levels and two A levels. He gained a second-class honours degree (2:2) in history at Cambridge

Diana, Princess of Wales, left school at 16 with a CSE in domestic science

Prince Andrew left Gordonstoun with six O levels and two A levels

Prince Edward gained nine O levels, three A levels and one S level, and a second-class history degree from Jesus College, Cambridge

The Princess Royal gained six 0 levels and two A levels

Prince William gained 12 GCSEs and three A levels at Eton

Prince Harry gained 11 GCSEs and two A levels

will's undergrad marks

for those of us not from the uk, what does at 2:1 mean? is it actually a good score? also, is an MA in the UK equivalent to an MA in North America? It seems sort of unlikely seeing as he only did 4 years of university.
