Isn't William already involved with several charities, such as Centrepoint? I would think that would be a point in his favor...

I wonder why Harry's wearing his iPod headphones at the game.

Oh, of course, he not only is busy with the army, polo playing, pub crawling, and shooting things at Granny's estate, but he is also so busy watching rugby! He should watch himself - it wouldn't do to overwork at such a tender age.

I know I am being sarcastic, but it is for a purpose...it just seems that his life is so centred around personal pleasures. Juxtapose this with the present Queen's words when she was younger than him: ""I cannot lead you into battle, I do not give you laws or administer justice but I can do something else, I can give you my heart and my devotion to these old islands and to all the peoples of our brotherhood of nations."

This devotion to her kingdom is admirable; she has been self-sacrificing for so many years, and the young Royals seem so self-centred.

I hope they change - but if they don't, I fear for the monarchy.

The problem is, what exactly is Prince William's function? We have a Queen, who still does more duties then most members of the Royal Family. We have the Prince of Wales, who fulfils all possible duties of the Prince of Wales, plus his own charities (like the Prince's Trust), we have the Queen's children (especially Princess Anne, one of the most hard-working royals), who each fulfil their public functions most admirably. And we have a young man, who's destinied to become King one day, but he isn't even the Prince of Wales.

Naturally, Prince William and Prince Harry (both training in the army, by the way, which is quite hard) are going to have very limited public functions these days. And I suppose Prince William is living his life to the fullest, until the time he is next in the line.
It's just my opinion.

Aww William and Kate look so cute. I love it when people get into sports.

Nice to see them out together, is it just the light in the picture or is Kate's hair darker?

Not even Prince William could get me to watch Rugby, glad Kate shares his interest.

I think her hair look the usual. :)

I would love to watch one of the Six Nations games, with or without Prince William. Preferably without, because I'm cheering, hmm, too loudly and too passionately.

Harry has iPod earpieces in his ears, I think. :)

In the British Army, William will certainly not be working 8.15 to 16.45. He won't be entitled to every weekend or every evening off either. Polo will be played for the army team or charity, during the season. He is entitled to have a life away from the army, with more retrictions than any 'ordinary' officer would tolerate.
I understand this bit about the work schedule. I can't see him working for the army on a daily basis, not with him undertaking engagements. With Charles, he was on a ship for months at a time and did nothing except Navy work and training. I guess William might be like a reserve officer, training troops some weekends, and maybe doing a weeks-long stretch twice or thrice a year.
They go out when they are able, together, to a nightclub, so what, I would worry if he was stood around on street corners!
He's a fairly productive guy, indeed. He doesn't take so many vacations when you compared them to other royals' vacations. The polo, I've long felt, is excessive, but I can live with it. I always felt Prince Charles played too much polo too, but what can you do?

Also, he's going to have to do the walkabout-factory visit-public speaking-charity work stuff with a smile perma-frozen to his face when it's his turn to be PoW. I don't see why he has to lock himself into the routine when he's still in his 20s. He should do some, yes, just to start forming the work-life balance, but balance takes a lot of time. If it didn't, self-help wouldn't be a multibillion dollar industry.

I could not have said it so well. The irony in this statement has me shaking my head, smiling with approval and admiration. :flowers:

So, William, if The Seven Habits does not help thou in thy quest for a balanced life, try some pills! The pharmaceutical industry surely profits as high as self-help literature.:whistling

Combined with a hardback edition of Who Moved My Cheese?, he could be unstoppable!

They are NOT a normal couple - my point exactly. So, why are they acting like any other bar hopping, egocentric, silly twenty-somethings? Why don't they devote themselves, (and not just for photo-ops,) to some worthy volunteer cause? To me, they just look like a couple of spoiled rich kids who have nothing else to do.

Hardly like the self sacrificing people that William's paternal grandmother, great grandparents and great great grandparents were at his age.

I am ashamed of their behaviour, and can't say too much in their defense to the republicans who want to get rid of the monarchy.

Barhooping wasn't the thing when Edward and Alexandra were Prince and Princess of Wales but they did have a social life that scandalized Queen Victoria. The Queen thought they were too frivolous and pleasure seeking. In contrast William and Kate seem quite tame. They go out seldom.

I think Harry is probably listening to the radio commentary of the match on his ipod. I do the same at the tennis and the cricket.

It's interesting to look at these pictures, as well as others at rugby or soccer matches. I have always pondered if they have 'season' tickets and thus get the same seats. And, do they sit in a private area of the stadium? Do those around them know they are there? Or, even care? And, do they get approached by others to get their pictures taken? And, do they arrive at the game in some sort of disguise and just walk to their seats or do they come in through a locker room? Anybody with any answers?:)

All army officers are entitled to a certain amount of days off per year, excluding weekends, of which, so far he has probably used some for the official events he has taken part in. A lot of the Polo he will be playing will be representing the army and/or his regiment. The army isn't a 9 to 5, 5 days a week job.

William and Clarence House have already said that he will be a normal full time officer, continuing his training and the general or specific duties all army officers are subjected to. He is not qualified in any discipline and therefore cannot be an instructor.

I doubt they will stop their fun for people who thinks like you. Silly¿ how¿! and what is wrong with being 20 something. If you think that is all they do, you probably hadnt seen Kate going to work or those pics of William runin several miles... Why dont you write to Wills and tell him exactly what to do¿

You're right. Normally at sports stadium, there's no overall commentary for spectators (unlike on TV), so to first-timers at a major stadium it seems quiet (if you ignore the crowd). Plus, commentary just makes it more interesting.

Again - all one has to do is look through this thread and realize that most of the pictures are of them 'relaxing.' I really don't think they work that hard. Period.

And, no one has been able to counter my claim that the two Princes don't appear as self-sacrificing as their grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great grandparents.

Period.

And exactly why does he need to appear as self-sacrificing as them?

And if he did appear to be as self-sacrificing would that make him a better King in the future? I mean to appear to be one thing while being something else is way worse in my opinion.

It is 2007 and the world has changed alot since his great-grandfather and great-great grandfather where young.

As they are both in the Army, it would make sense that most of their public time is spent relaxing.

I think we're most familiar with George V and George VI as kings, especially as leaders during wartime, so of course they appear hard-working and self-sacrificing. And the Queen was already the monarch in her mid-20s so there's no real parallel there. However, in biographies of George VI and Queen Elizabeth, it didn't seem as though they performed a whole lot of duties or anything while they were Duke and Duchess of York - I gather they were criticised for spending a lot of time dancing and otherwise socialising. Same for George V: one of his biographers said something along the lines that although there was a lot of official stuff to talk about once he became King, his life before that seemed to consist mostly of killing animals and sticking stamps into his albums.

I don't think the press have very easy access to William while he's on duty, so of course they're going to mostly be photographing him during his leisure time. That doesn't mean he isn't doing other stuff in between the times he's being photographed.

Okay, what would you prefer William and Harry do when they are not working in the Army? Dig ditches? Pick up garbage along the roadway? Paint fences? If I'm in the armed forces and I get a spare moment to myself, you best believe I'll be relaxing and doing nothing. I'm sure they don't get many moments like that, and what we see is an accumulation of photos that make it appear like it's all the time, but it's really not.

The boys are living in a different time than their grandparents, great-grandparents and their great-great grandparents did, so one can expect them to behave differently than they did. It doesn't mean they work any more or any less.

May I ask what you do when you are not at work - in general terms only by the way?

Presumably you spend your time relaxing, being with your family and friends, playing sports, going out, etc.

As the princes are full time army officers that is their work - to train and to perform the tasks associated with being full time commissioned officers. Accordingly the photographers don't have access to them to take photos of them, except doing runs. Would you really like to see photos of them doing administrative duty in the guard room, inspecting their troops, firing a weapon, training themselves etc.

When not doing that - their full time job - they seem to spend their time relaxing, being with their family and friends, playing sports, going out etc - exactly as I do and I assume that most of us do when not doing our full time jobs.

Unfortunately, as they are second and third in line to the throne, when they do these sorts of things the photographers are there and publish these photos.

I see nothing wrong with these young men spending their off duty time with their friends, doing the sorts of things I do (admittedly I don't go to clubs but I do spend time with my friends and family).

What would you have them do when not doing their full time job?

Do you have any idea of the difficulty of being a full time army officer? If so you would understand why they relax so much away from their duty.

I hope you are doing exactly what your grandparents, great grandparents and great great grandparents did with their lives.
Have you ever been in the armed forces, have you ever been a British officer, if not how can you possibly say they don't work that hard? The media is unable to get many photo's of them while they are working, are you saying they do nothing the rest of the time, but come out for occasional weekend or evening photo ops?
Times have moved on since their grandparents day for a lot of people!

Awesome post Skydragon. Well, some people want to nail William and Harry to the cross because they don't get up every morning, genuflect at their mother's shrine, self-flaggelate, then pray for 4 hours before they go out in their monks robes to feed the hungry for 16 hours 7 days per week. William, take Kate & come on over to the US. You'd love it. And no one here would recognize either of you. Except for me, and I ain't talkin'. LOL
