the bodyguard story sounds pretty serious. i was wondering if perhaps her parents had made the arrangements but i think if that were the case it would be through a private security firm and not scotland yard...IF it's true.

My first thought was the same - that her parents had hired a bodyguard for her nights out. However if it is true that she is now receiving protection at the taxpayer expense, I would think that there will be a forthcoming announcement perhaps in the spring or summer otherwise I think the royal family will have a lot of explaining to do about the cost. There have already been stories about Beatrice and Eugenie running up protection services bills.

i agree...i think there will be an announcement coming sooner rather than later.

Well there's nothing to clash with in 2008 so it would make sense. I'd say once Williams out of the RAF we'll hear something.

One of the most difficult things in the world to do these days, is find a suitable girlfriend if you are heir to the throne. Who can Prince William trust? He has known Kate a long time, and she is safe. She's been discreet so far, and never blabbed. But then again, Diana was like that before her marriage, and look where that took us... That's my humble opinion. I have the impression that Kate is a user. I wish that she would get herself a job.

Provided that the story is true I'd find it quite absurd. Either Kate is Wills' fiancee and therefore is entitled to the stuff that goes with it or she is not. Very simple. Besides, in her case I'd see a minder more as an "I am important" *** statement rather than a protection issue. I doubt Daniel Westling enjoys the service of a bodyguard payed for by the swedish taxpayers - and he's dating the heiress, not the 2nd in line.

***sorry, Kate, you are not.

Aren't we the bearer of brutal honesty?! Welcome back.... ;)

The article does specify that the bodyguard(s) come from Scotland Yard (Metropolitan Police of London), not from a private protection firm. As a citizen and resident of the metro London area, Kate is always entitled to Scotland Yard protection, however I would assume the regular entitlement is on an 'as needed' basis, not a round-the-clock personal shadow. HRH's and government or diplomatic officials, etc. get round-the-clock personal shadows, not the average joe citizens. Kate has already been seen using her right to a police escort in some iffy paparazzi situations, but she has not been seen yet with a personal protection officer. If she is going to be now accompanied 24/7 by a PPO from Scotland Yard, I'd guess that's coming from Clarence House, not her parents, and it would be a sign of a coming announcement.

I admit I wasn't expecting an announcement this year. I thought maybe next year it would come.

I believe the bodyguard story...and that an announcement about those 2 is coming soon. She must be excited and extremely nervous...

 I have never been away! ;)

You are right CT, 24/7 must come from Clarence House and if it does there better is an announcement around the corner. It's true that in theory the Joe Average resident - and that applies to Kate who is a private citizen without announcement - is entitled to protection but that remains theory. In times when it has almost become habitual that the police is unable to protect private citizens in residential London areas from getting mugged or stabbed a special treatment for Ms Middleton would certainly bring the Met into hot waters, again after a controversial year 2007.

Clarence House says four months. Then almost immediately, the Royal Navy training begins.

Oh the Navy as well?! How jolly. Anything to put off work. Maybe they're waiting for the engagement till they unleash his dull as ditchwater personality on the world. Kate might bring some glamour to combat the sleep-inducing quality this 'young' man seeps.

It has been my understanding that Miss Middleton's mother is keen on becoming relatives with the British Royal Family. Let us hope that the mother in question does fully realize the pros and cons of being married into the Royal family.

Agreed...anyone who thinks it's some kind of fairytale is seriously delusional. It's not an easy life to be a royal...it can force the most sane person to crack. I think she's been groomed these past years, hopefully she rises to expectations...it will be interesting to see her interviewed.

People just need to calm down! They cannot announce their engagement within a next few months because, although nobody really cares, his cousin is getting married in a couple of months and the royal family does not work that.I think the royals need a little breathin break before the "Big Wedding". Don't hold your breath you know what happened last year, everybody was getting hyped up around her birthday, then they split. Just Sayin!

Kate may very well have bodyguards from the Royal Protection Service (if The Queen approved and received consent from Brown), but you can be sure William or Charles is reimbursing the Government for the cost from their private money.

Only Royal Highnesses are automatically entitled to Scotland Yard protection on the taxpayer's dime. Everyone else in the RF is on their own or The Queen pays for it.

If Kate does get her own bodyguard then an engagement announcement is on the cards. There is bo way that the Queen, who has been trying in the last few years not to waste taxpayers money, will allow money to be spent on a bodyguard for Kate unless she is to become a member of the Royal Family. I am watching this space especially once William completes his flying training.

Here is Abbie's two-cents' worth ...

I know that no one here can know for sure, but since we are expressing our personal beliefs, here's mine: I believe that William and Kate do care about each other and have a kind of love for each other ("whatever love means"). :D However, Kate is a very "safe" girlfriend for William. She is willing to put up with the crap (which is good) and happy to accept the perks (why not?) and she is just an all-around safe person to commit to.
But honestly, if William had the option of being with a Jessica Craig, if Jessica would have him, I have to wonder ......... would he be with Kate now? I don't know. But I wonder. And, I must confess, a tiny part of me hopes, because I always rooted for Jecca.... but mostly, I hope I am wrong, because Kate seems to be the one he will marry, and I want him to marry the one he truly loves and not just the "safe one".

I would love to see their relationship become permanent!

Cheers to William and Kate getting "hitched" one day ...

I like her too...she just seems genuinely likable. In every picture...it's effortless...

I agree, his cousin is getting married this year. The RF won't overshadow him. At best they might announce something after his wedding, maybe late 2008.
This seems like 'birthday hype'. They did a version of this last year and last year they also claimed she was getting bodyguards.

No one cares about Peter's wedding though...do they? Certainly not the media. They seem too private to do some huge wedding to be covered by the press...I wouldn't be surprised if it happens quietly somewhere with a small number of people...

I don't believe the bodyguard story any more than I believed it when they printed it last year. Isn't the Daily Mail not exactly known for its accuracy?

This story is just a re-harsh from last year and reading all the reactions of other members here, it obviously sells well.

I think the media will care just to a certain extent, but not so much because of Peter & Autumn; more because of who:rolleyes: will be there, as happens with anonymous people who happen to know/be related to "great" people. (Think: Tom Parker Bowles wedding; did the press care about him or that he is Camilla's son/Charles's stepson?) I think it is pretty much confirmed that the wedding will be at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, so I'd expect some pictures of the Who's Who arrivals. It probably will be low key as far as royal weddings go, but still ..... he is still The Queen's grandson, after all.

you're right about the reputation of the daily mail, but because they're quoting the evening standard, which is a very reputable paper, people are paying attention.

Err, the Evening Standard is owned by Associated Newspapers, who publish the same tripe as the Dirty Mail. Most of the time, if you have read the ES, you will find all the main stories, with the same wording in the Mail. It is classed as a tabloid. :flowers:

Wouldn't security arrangements be officially announced by Scotland Yard? Not the details of course but who is entitled to protection etc.? At least in her birthday pics she wasn't accompanied by securities. And to be quite honest she seems to manage quite well recently to keep a low profile the days of daily pictures of her simply walking down the street seem to be gone.

The tabloids in Britain always seem more on point than anywhere else in the world anyway......except News of the World...:ermm:

If they have decided they're going to get married, even if it won't be till next year, I wish The Powers That Be would just say so, so all this speculation can stop and everyone can get on with whatever they're getting on with.

I don't think there will be anywhere near the interest there was with Charles & Diana's wedding, and there need not be as much fuss. The-blushing-virgin-bride-fairytale-wedding scenario is not in play here. They can go on living together quietly at BP or wherever, and William can go on doing Prince-of-Wales-in-waiting things and Kate can have the protection she needs and get on with the business of learning how to be a member of the RF in peace, and start doing charity things and people can stop talking about whether she should or should have a job, etc.
