Duchess is cheered as she samples Devon cider

Crowds at the Devon County Show cheered and applauded yesterday as the Duchess of Cornwall inspected cattle, sheep and pigs and sampled the local cider.

The duchess was accompanying the Prince of Wales, the show's patron, on their first visit to the South-West since their marriage last month. As Duke of Cornwall, the prince is one of the largest landowners in the region.

The duchess, dressed in a coral dress and matching coat, also tasted locally made lemon and Pimms pudding, bread and ice cream.

After she inspected some Bluefaced Leicester sheep, their owner, Tom Turner, a farmer, said: "She is one of us - a country person."

Yvonne Isaacs, an exhibitor from Winkleigh, Devon, said: "People are pleased that Charles and Camilla have found happiness at last. They are a charming couple. She is so relaxed with people. I think she will be a great success."

During the pig judging, the duchess asked how the Large Blacks were made to look so black and shiny. "I told her I used baby oil," the breeder, Vicky Mills, said.

Before the couple left, they were presented with a late wedding present, a garden seat hand made by a local craftsman, Martin Symes. The duchess inspected the seat and said: "If I sat down I would be out for the afternoon - it looks far too comfortable."

The couple later travelled on to Cornwall for a reception at Restormel Castle, which is owned by the Prince's Duchy of Cornwall. They are due to fly today to the Isles of Scilly.

• The Duchy expressed "disappointment" last night after a complex of 26 flats, two shops, four office units and parking proposed for the prince's model Dorset village of Poundbury was refused planning permission.

West Dorset district council said it would create an "overpowering relationship" with adjoining homes.

The Duchess of Cornwall seems to have slipped comfortably into her new duties, receiving cheers and applause as she attended a Devon livestock event at the side of her husband Prince Charles.

Greeting members of the public with a smile, Camilla appeared to be getting accustomed to a busy royal schedule. And the newly-minted Duchess will see her agenda go into full swing soon as she joins the Queen at ceremonies marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar on June 28. Also on the Duchess' calendar in June are high profile events Royal Ascot and Trooping the Colour.

While apparently settling in to her new role, Camilla hasn't shed all aspects of her prior life. The Daily Mail reports that the royal has decided to keep Raymill House, her own home near Highgrove. While it was expected Camilla would sell the mansion, with the money put aside in trust for her two children, Tom and Laura Parker Bowles, it looks like the newlywed has had a change of heart.

A source tells the newspaper the Duchess is "infinitely more comfortable" at her longtime home, adding: "There are no servants and she feels she can relax more easily with her friends… She also feels that it is Tom and Laura's home, too. Somewhere they can come back to."

So why is the newlywed Duchess of Cornwall so ecstatically happy?

CHARLES and Camilla have never exactly been rated as a laugh-a-minute comedy double act.

Since their wedding, however, something strange has happened, a transformation so extraordinary that questions are being asked.

Not so long ago, misery guts Charles wore a permanent frown. And Camilla's notoriously glum glare was enough to send Coco the Clown into deep depression.

But for our future King and Queen, it's clear that the tittering times they are a-changin'.

So say goodbye to the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall...and a hilarious hello to Chas and Cam, the dizzy duo who tied the knot and went straight into a round-the-clock fit of non-stop giggling. After one of the longest affairs in romantic history, married life is cheering them up to such an extent the whole thing's getting beyond a joke.

Those wacky Windsors seem incapable of wiping away those mile-wide smiles.

But as they guffawed around the Scilly Isles yesterday, the cackling couple's constant chortling sparked speculation there must be more to this than merely marital bliss.

Royal watchers were last night pondering a series of shocking theories as to why Charlie and his darling keep cracking up.

Prince Charles stole my idea for local produce, claims Cornish baker

It is a tale of the prince, the baker and the saffron cake that never made it on to supermarket shelves.

The Prince of Wales was accused yesterday of stealing a Cornish trader's idea and launching a royal food range that has since become a multi-million pound enterprise.

Prince Charles's Duchy Originals brand has more than 130 productsAccording to one former employee of Tesco, Martyn Hawkins was "royally sold down the river" by Prince Charles when the baker was on the verge of signing a lucrative new contract with the supermarket chain worth an estimated £200,000 a year.

Last week, Mr Hawkins and Sue Wolstenholme, who handled the marketing negotiations with Tesco, said they had been shocked and disappointed by the way he was treated.

Mr Hawkins had come up with the idea of providing Tesco with a wholesome, country brand to fill a gap in the supermarket's bread and cake products. He had invested £20,000 in the project and had even designed the packaging for the new brand. After 18 months of negotiations, Tesco was poised to take 4,000 saffron cakes a week for its shelves.

The supermarket, however, told Mr Hawkins at "the eleventh hour" that it had decided not to sell his product which had been due to be marketed as Cornish "Sunshine Cake".

Instead, Tesco announced in 1990 that it was going to sell Prince Charles's Highgrove bread, a sliced wholemeal loaf made from organic wheat from his estate in Gloucestershire.

There was only one gap on the supermarket's bread and cake shelves for a new country brand and so Cornish Sunshine Cake was never marketed. The Highgrove bread, however, was the forerunner of the Duchy Originals brand, which sells more than 130 products and makes more than £1 million a year for Prince Charles's chosen charities.

The allegations emerged last week when the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Cornwall for the first time since their wedding last month. It jogged memories of the supposedly unsavoury episode for Mr Hawkins 15 years ago. Clarence House, however, has put it down to a "misunderstanding".

Back in 1990, Mr Hawkins was convinced that he was on the verge of fame and fortune with a project that would also provide extra jobs for Britain's poorest county. The design for packaging included the chough, the rare bird widely associated with Cornwall.

Miss Wolstenholme said yesterday that she had first told Prince Charles about her client's intention to market the saffron cake at a lunch in Cornwall attended by 300 guests. The function, at the Headland Hotel in Newquay, was called "Cornwall - the Way Ahead" and was an attempt to promote Cornish products.

"Prince Charles was interested in the project and we discussed it," she said. "When he left, he asked me to update him on how it was going so we did. We hoped the Prince might become involved in promoting Martyn's new brand.

"Then, out of the blue, at the eleventh hour, the Tesco's executive rang me to say they wouldn't be taking Cornish Sunshine because it had decided to take the Highgrove loaf instead. He said they would be selling Prince Charles's bread. His comment to me was, 'I think you've been royally sold down the river'.

"It was a difficult situation. I was very surprised that the Prince put one of his own products before Martyn's because I thought he was behind the idea of getting Cornish products sold nationally."

Mr Hawkins, 54, who has run Martin's bakers in St Austell, Cornwall, since 1978, said: "At the time, I was very disappointed. Sue had put a lot of work into it, I had put a lot of money into it and we were on the verge of signing a deal to expand the brand nationwide.

"I was certainly surprised - no, shocked - to learn that the space that had been preliminarily allocated to us was instead being given to Prince Charles for his Highgrove range. I don't know whether Prince Charles actually used information that he had gathered from Sue to his advantage but it was all a bit rich."

A former senior employee at Tesco confirmed Mr Hawkins' and Miss Wolstenholme's version of events. "It was quite amazing. This baker had come up with a concept for selling a pure Cornish product with the connotations of quality and homeliness that are now synonymous with the Duchy Originals brand.

"As I remember, it was being sorted out by one of our senior staff and out of the blue he was summoned to the palace [St James's Palace, where the Prince used to have his private office]. In any event, after that meeting [with the Prince], Cornish Sunshine cakes were binned and Highgrove loaves were on the shelves. Everyone felt sympathy for the baker."

The website for Duchy Originals says: "In 1990 the Prince of Wales commissioned some research into the feasibility of a small range of agricultural marketing initiatives." Duchy Originals, which now markets five different breads among its range, was launched in 1992. Last year it announced its first £1 million annual profit for its charities from a turnover of £35 million.

This weekend Tesco said that the member of staff who had negotiated the deal was no longer with the company and it could not comment. A spokesman for Clarence House said: "I am sure there has been a misunderstanding and that there is an innocent explanation to all this. The Prince of Wales is a well known supporter of small businesses and would never knowingly do down a small baker."

I agree.

I was never a Camilla fan, but since she has began official engagements and we are seeing her out and about more, and getting to know her more, I think she is doing a wonderful job. I think one of the problems before the marriage was that we never really knew Camilla Parker-Bowles, so branded her merely on newspaper articles. I think she is looking very radiant at the moment, but most of all, so happy - and Charles is beaming! It's a pleasure to see them together.

I was never a supporter of their marriage when I first heard of their engagement, but they have definately proved me wrong! I was, an still am, a great admirer of Princess Diana, but why should Charles have to suffer for the rest of his life, and remain single, for making a mistake? I suppose Charles will one day be king, and Camilla is the 'perfect' partner for him, but most of all, she makes him happy and supports him, which is what he needs when he does become king.

Camilla on first solo engagement

Camilla will visit Southampton General Hospital

The Duchess of Cornwall is due to carry out her first solo engagement as a member of the Royal Family.

Camilla, who married the Prince of Wales last month, will visit Southampton General Hospital for a tour of the osteoporosis unit.

She became president of the National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) after her mother died from the bone disease.

The visit was postponed in April because it was considered inappropriate in the run-up to the general election.

It will be the Duchess' first official appearance without the Prince of Wales since their wedding in Windsor on April 9.

During her trip, she will also open the hospital's Medical Research Council Epidemiology Resource Centre.

Camilla's mother, Rosalind Shand, suffered from osteoporosis before her death in 1994, and her grandmother also died from the disease.

The Duchess told an international summit on osteoporosis in 2002 that she "watched in horror" as her mother "shrank before our eyes".

Quality of life

"She lost about eight inches in height and became so bent that she was unable to digest her food properly, leaving her with no appetite at all.

"In her latter years, she could not breathe without oxygen or even totter round her beloved garden on her Zimmer frame. "I believe that the quality of her life became so dismal and her suffering so unbearable that she just gave up the fight and lost the will to live." One in three women and one in 12 men in the UK develops osteoporosis - thinning of the bones - during their lifetime.
