So anyway, back to the fact that you know that Harry will enjoy William saluting him.

I wonder if we will ever really see this.

It won't happen until after Harry graduates in 14 weeks time - assuming that he does and I think he will.

Then they will have to be in a position where they are meeting, in uniform, publicly. Usually when we see them they are coming from one place and going to another place together. How often have we actually seen them meet each other? The Trooping the Colour comes to mind as an occassion on which they could both be together in uniform but they will not be greeting each other in public so a salute would be done in private not public.

I suspect that the best occassion would be on Harry's graduation day - after he actually gets his commission if William comes up then William would have to salute the newly commission officer. They may even do it for the press but I think it would be a private moment between them.

Once William graduates the chances decrease markedly of Harry ever having to salute William as William, being a uni graduate, will reach 1st Lt faster than Harry. Of course after the initial couple of promotions Harry may gain promotion on merit faster than William but I don't think William will be in the army long enough for that to be an issue and when he leaves the army he will get regular promotions in line with his position as 2nd in line to the throne.

Cadet Officers do not attend the Trooping of the Colour, so we won't see it there.
Unless the degree is for a specialist subject ie. Doctor, Vet, a university education does not make a great deal of difference to your climb up the ladder. As I said in an earlier post, a degree can be gained in psychology, Madonna, The Beatles and all manner of subjects, none of which would help you in the Army.
Promotion is usually based on your performance as an officer, although an exception will probably be made for William. That would be unfair to the rest of the recruits and to Harry but, life is rarely fair!:)

No, William was there (obviously not in any uniform). The press were complaining that Harry should have been given time off to attend.
You can't wear a officers uniform until you have passed all the courses and have passed out (graduated) as an officer.:)

harry not was in the trooping colouor 2005 with uniform, he was in world war 60 anniversary in july with uniform

I believe that you are mistaken about Harry being in the 60th anniversary parade.
William was on the balcony, with his step mum, Tim Laurence and Princess Alexandra.
Although various Cadet Corps took part, they are not to be confused with Officer Cadets.
Where did you read that Harry took part?

Harry was on the balcony, he did not take part, he was in his officer cadets uniform, not an officers!.

i think you are right. harry and william 'swapped' balcony appearances this year. willliam was at one, harry at the other.

Thanks Pollyemma, I checked and Harry was on the balcony of BP but certainly did not take part in the parade.

Harry was on the balcony, he did not take part, he was in his officer cadets uniform, not an officers!.

William was in New Zealand when the 60th Anniversary took place.

Harry was definitely on the balcony, laughing with Camilla. He was in his officer cadet's uniform and was certainly in the car that came past me, returning from the celebrations at Horseguards.

As I have never been to the Trooping of the Colour I have never seen William so I know I am not confused.

Sorry I didn't make it clear. I meant if they attended as part of the Royal procession not on the parade ground but of course it will be held while William is still training and not in his break time so he won't be able to attend anyway.

I my personal experience, due to having a degree, I was commissioned as a 2nd Lt but after the commissioning ceremony was immediately given my 2nd pip making me a 1st Lt. Those in my class who didn't have degrees and who had graduated on the same parade had to salute me immediately. Even so my rank wasn't substantive until the same date as theirs and but I was eligible for promotion to Captain 6 months before them. I served in the Australian Army Reserve, which has the same promotion practices as the British at the early levels.


A degree does allow William faster promotion at the earlier ranks than Harry.


Harry has even said comments along the lines that he will only be able to have William salute him for a short period of time as he knows that William will get the extra promotion due to the degree.

After they both make captain then will they have to be judged on their military ability alone and William's degress will have no meaning.

Perhaps if Harry knows that William will be outranking him sooner rather than later, he'll forgo the short-term pleasure of having William salute him, then.

We will have to agree to disagree but with 2 sons who are serving Army Officers, a nephew training at Sandhurst, all with degrees and with the present advertising campaign pointing out that 'you are judged on your abilities not your qualifications', I can only put it down to a difference between the regular army and the reserve (which I believe is like our territorials).

As we have all seen, you can't rely too much on what the papers say.
