Prince Andrew visits Toronto, dedicates rose garden to Queen, opens school

By STEPHANIE LEVITZ

TORONTO (CP) - Prince Andrew celebrated the lessons he has learned from life as a royal on Friday, telling monarchists young and old to value the power of leadership, responsibility and respect.

The prince, the third child of the Queen, spoke of the lessons of faith, power, failure, etiquette and the nature of public service that he has learned from his mother. "We live in a new age where the age of deference has been superseded by the age of reference," the prince said at a luncheon speech to the Empire Club at a posh downtown hotel.

"Perhaps we are in danger of losing sight of one or two fundamental building blocks of democracy if this is misunderstood. Respect is one of these blocks. It is not only our respect for the faith, service and responsibility of our monarch but also her respect for us."

Attendees of the luncheon expressed delight at the prince's remarks, with several noting that the speech was much better than they had thought it would be.

"The monarchy seems very far removed from our daily lives," said Nadia Mattiuzzi. "But when you think about the elements of leadership, responsibility and service and how he applied those traditions to what we face every day, it makes it relevant."

Earlier in the day, hundreds of monarchists jostled for a good viewing spot outside the Ontario legislature as Prince Andrew dedicated a rose garden planted in honour of the Queen's Golden Jubilee, a celebration of the 50th anniversary of her reign.

"The garden was very conveniently planted," joked Prince Andrew. "I'm not sure how you inaugurate a rose garden - at least if you're planting a tree there is some soil to throw."

Planted by the Toronto Monarchist League, the garden lies next to a circle of shrubbery planted to honour the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Women and men of all ages mobbed the prince as he exited the legislature, climbing on the steps - and each other - to snap pictures.

Stopping to chat with two young girls, he admonished them for not being in school and then dictated that their homework for the evening was to write a paper on what they had experienced that day.

Leadership and responsibility were the lessons that the prince also tried to instil at his last visit of the day, the opening of Greenwood College School, a private school that focuses on students learning as much from books as from the outdoors.

To a group of students in Grades 7 and 9, the prince spoke warmly of the lessons he learned over two semesters as a student at Lakefield College, outside of Peterborough, Ont., and the value of learning by experiencing, not just watching.

"If you don't actively take any risk at all in your life you are not going to grow and develop," the prince said.

The prince left for Montreal later Friday to attend a dinner. On Saturday he was to address the graduating class of Lakefield College before flying to Victoria for an education conference.

Prince Andrew last visited Canada in May, when he travelled across the country on an unofficial visit, meeting with children, members of the armed forces and opening several hospitals and schools. He is fourth in line for the throne of England.

Prince Andrew visits Toronto, dedicates garden

With Union Jacks tucked into purses and massive umbrellas protecting fresh hairdos, a crowd of royal enthusiasts gathered at the Ontario legislature today to welcome Prince Andrew.

The prince was in Toronto for several private events, stopping at the legislature to dedicate a rose garden in honour of his mother Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee, a celebration of the 50th anniversary of her reign.

As he approached the garden, the prince noted that all of the yellow roses had already been planted.

"I'm not sure how you inaugurate a rose garden — at least if you're planting a tree there is some soil to throw," the prince joked.

"As long as you will all come back and make sure the flowers are looked after."

The garden was sponsored by Toronto's Monarchist League, which also planted one to honour the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

"We looked over then and realized there was space for a garden for the Queen's Golden Jubilee," said Arthur Bousfield, 59, a member of the league and a historian who wrote a book about the Queen.

"We see that there is still space, so maybe we'll get one for the Diamond Jubilee (75 years)."

Prince Andrew has made dozens of visits to Canada since his time as a student at Lakefield College near Peterborough in 1977.

"He doesn't come to Canada as a stranger," said John Aimers, organizer of the morning event. "He comes as one of us. He is a Canadian."

While at the legislature, the prince also met with young monarchists.

"I was so nervous," said Evan Elford, 22, a University of Guelph student. "It was the first time I'd ever met a member of the monarchy, but it was quite a comfortable experience."

While the young monarchists would not elaborate, they said the prince joked with them and talked about sports.

Prince Andrew's Toronto itinerary also included a luncheon with the Empire Club and the opening of a school.

He was also to visit Lakefield to preside over closing exercises.

Prince Andrew, Duke of York, is the third child of the Queen and Prince Philip. He is fourth in line to the throne.

He last visited Canada in May, when he travelled across the country on an unofficial visit, meeting with children, members of the armed forces and opening several hospitals and schools.

THE JOLLY JAUNTS OF PRINCE FREEBIE

STEVE DOUGHTY AND RICHARD KAY
DAILY MAIL, June 27, 2003

The 'Prince of Freebies' was at the centre of new concern last night over his lavish taxpayer-funded journeys abroad.

The Duke of York, already under fire for taking publicly-funded trips to glamorous locations, staged the most costly royal visit of all last year, the royal accounts revealed.

An eight-day trip to Uruguay, Chile and the Falkland Islands cost the taxpayer GBP 130,211 - more than any of the engagements carried out by more senior royals.

His first-class travels also took him to the most prestigious sporting events at public expense, but with little apparent benefit to the public. Prince Andrew carries the unpaid title of Special Representative for British Trade and Investment, under which he is required to promote the interests of British companies.

However, during the South American trip he accepted an invitation from Swedish tycoon Johan Eliasch for a weekend in a fashionable resort near Rio de Janeiro - even though Brazil was not on his official itinerary.

He went by helicopter to Palmeiras Island to visit the waterside mansion of Brazilian TV presenter Luciano Huck. While there, he boarded a speedboat with a Playboy model, Alexia Deschamps, and a number of other bikini-clad girls. One of them, 33-year-old Ana Paula Junqueira, said later: 'Andrew became friends of the whole group, and even exchanged phone numbers.'

The Brazilian jaunt took place while the Prince's daughter Eugenie was recovering from a spinal operation and while the Queen was coping with the backwash of the Paul Burrell trial.

Some critics also felt Andrew was misguided to indulge in what looked like playboy behaviour just before visiting the Falkland Islands for a remembrance service for servicemen killed in the conflict 20 years beforehand.

During the year Andrew flew twice to Japan to watch the England football team's progress in the World Cup - at a cost to the taxpayer of GBP 34,521.

He went as President of the Football Association. But yesterday the FA said that was purely an honorary title. He was fulfilling no official function and there was no reason for him to go other than his own interest.

The Prince spent four days in Japan in late May and early June. The financial report says this was a 'visit to Japan to promote trade links and, as Football Association President, attend England's first World Cup match'.

The price was GBP 17,905, paid by the taxpayer.

Three weeks later he was back, again flying first class at public
expense though there was no trade element to the trip. The royal report listed it: 'As Football Association President, attend England v Brazil World Cup quarter final.' The cost for the Prince and an aide was GBP 16,616.

Andrew's love of golf has also taken him out and about.
Last night it was revealed that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club has agreed to contribute to his travel expenses as its honorary 'captain'. And earlier this year he was criticised for taking a royal flight in a BAe 146 jet to RAF Leuchars in Scotland to spend a day on the links at St Andrews.

Yesterday's accounts also show another taxpayer-funded day out, by helicopter to Silverstone race track on the practice day before the Grand Prix, at a cost of GBP 845.

Hi Jalmey,

That's an interesting article, but they leave out how the royals are criticised for working and earning their own money? How much is Andrew actually paid for not working, and instead representing Britain's trade interests? Is there an exact agenda already in place as to how a royal should represent Britains trade interests?

I'm starting to see a damn if they do and damn if they don't approach to this news article.

Agreed Thissal. I think this criticism might be a little high-strung considering that Andrew is fourth in line to the throne.

WARSAW (AFP) - Britain's Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II, began a two-day visit to Poland, meeting Polish leaders and business executives in his capacity as Britain's special representative for international trade and investment.

The prince met President Aleksander Kwasniewski, Prime Minister Leszek Miller, addressed the British-Polish Chamber of Commerce and met a group of British businessmen established in Poland.
He told the meeting with British businessmen the EU's forthcoming enlargement to include Poland and nine other new countries would create new challenges and opportunities for businesses.

"There are very many challenges for individual companies faced with greater domestic and international competition. It would be better to call these new opportunities as new markets open up," he said.

On Thursday Prince Andrew was due to visit Wroclaw in western Poland.

Duke of York Tees off as Head of UK's Oldest Golf Course

19 SEPTEMBER 2003
Prince Andrew assumed the captaincy of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews on Thursday, becoming the sixth member of the Royal Family to do so.

To mark his new role as the head of the UK's oldest golf course, the Prince hit an opening drive on the first tee as a cannon shot rang out. Caddies rushed to retrieve the ball, which travelled an estimated 265 yards, and the man who found it – St Andrews employee Ian Reddie – received a gold sovereign from the Prince, in line with a tradition which began in 1922 with the future King Edward VIII.

Prince Andrew said he has high aims for his stint in the course's top post. "I hope that throughout my captaincy there will be an air of celebration for the game of golf – not only here but throughout the golfing word," he said.

The Royal and Ancient, widely considered the most famous golf club in the world, was founded 250 years ago. Other members of the Royal Family who have served in the captain role included, in the 19th century, the Prince of Wales and Prince Leopold, and in the 20th century, the Prince of Wales, Duke of York and Duke of Kent.

The Duke of York attends the christening of ex-girlfriend Aurelia Cecil's first child

There was a typically festive atmosphere when Aurelia Cecil , former PR queenpin and professional party-giver extraordinaire, celebrated her own happy event, baptising new daughter Saskia before some 200 friends and family.

Baby Saskia Elisabeth Jane Amherst Stephenson, born on July 13 , is Aurelia's first child with husband Rupert Stephenson. Her middle names are in honour of her grandmother and her first surname is inherited from Aurelia's father, Lord Amherst of Hackney.

"This is a beautiful and happy occasion," said the rev Sandy Railton, who officiated at the ceremony in the couple's local church in Froxfield, Wiltshire. And both Saskia's parents did indeed look overwhelmingly happy as they chatted with friends after the ceremony, during which Saskia behaved beautifully.

Among the guests was the Duke of York, who read a lesson during the service. He and Aurelia, 36, have remained close friends since the break-up of their nine-month romance five years ago, and he attended her wedding to old Etonian Rupert,39, in 2000. It was Aurelia who brought Andrew on board to spearhead the NCPCC's Heap Of Change campaign.

Having suffered a miscarriage last year, as soon as she knew that she was pregnant again Aurelia gave up work at the high-profile PR company she had founded.

Rupert, too, has been careful to fit his job around parenthood, spending less time commuting to the south of France, where his elite villa-rental agency, Kestrel Travel, is based, and more at home in Wiltshire.

After the christening everyone, including Saskia's godmothers Lady Dalmeny and Lucy Sangster, were served lunch in the autumn sunshine in the garden of Aurelia and Rupert's home.

Then the Duke of York took off to visit his daughter Princess Eugenie at nearby Marlborough College, where she has recently started studying.

While Aurelia has given up the heady world of PR for now, she's still keeping very busy. As well ad being a new mum, she's also thrown herself into writing a romantic novel. Prince Andrew needn't worry about its content, however, as she says it's set during World War 1 and based on the life of a distant relative who married a suffragette.

I don't think he'll remarry . I still think Sarah has a BIG influence on Andrew and i don't think she would really want him to get married cause that would mean she would be pretty much out of the picture.

I think she won't like it either that her girls will be living with Andrew's new wife cause they will live with Andrew when he moves to royal lodge.
