More on that.

Prince Andrew to abseil down the Shard
Shard day's fright: Prince Andrew to climb down 1,016ft from top of new London landmark for charity
Quote:
Daring Prince Andrew will abseil down the Shard, leaping from the 1,016ft London landmark to raise cash for charity. He will join Foreign Secretary William Hague’s wife, Ffion, on Europe’s tallest building on September 3. The pair will be among 40 abseilers raising funds for The Outward Bound Trust and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. They will join the 20 bravest on an 820ft drop from the summit of the 87th floor to the 20th, while 20 others do a shorter descent – from the 87th to 78th floor.

I remember when Andrew did all the adventurous stuff back in the 80s and it seems that that Andrew is back.

The cause is a good one as well so hopefully he will also get some good press for this effort.

I hope so too.

From somewhat recent photos I've seen of Andrew, it kind of looked to me like he was starting to look paunchy and out of shape but if he's going to do something like this, he's in better shape than I thought he was.

He does seem to like the adventurous stuff although he's most known for loving golf. He's gone on wilderness trips too if I remember correctly in Alaska.

He did some adventurous stuff in Alaska but he still does it in Canada regularly with his old school friends from his time at Lakeland School there.

He still loves his gold of course but the adventurous side is still there as well.

What a lot of people don't know is that is it Andrew that has taken over his father's role with the Outward Bound Scheme - everyone knows that Edward took over The DoE Award Scheme but Andrew took on the other scheme. Both encourage adventurous spirit in young people.

Maybe it's less of Andrew being in shape to do abseiling and more his adventurous side beckoning him. I hope he exercises caution if he's not in good physical form to do this.

I wonder whether he is actually in shape but looks larger than his brothers so we assume he is out of shape. Not everyone who is larger than normal is actually out of shape.

I am sure that he will train properly and not undertake the activity if he isn't up to it - the Health and Safety people will see to that.

It could be the push he needs to get back into shape. Some people need a goal and this is a good one. He plays golf a lot and that is a fair bit of walking so hopefully he is going to work on other parts that need stregnthening for this I would think his arms etc. Glad to see Andrew back to Action Man mode.

Airmiles Andy gets ready for The Open: Prince takes £3,000 helicopter flight on golfing treat to play championship course
Quote:
The world's top golfers won't tee off there until Thursday. But Prince Andrew was given an exclusive chance to test the Open course last week – after flying himself there by helicopter. The keen golfer, who plays off a handicap of four, got some practice in at Royal Lytham & St Annes ahead of the prestigious tournament, which begins this week.

Action man Prince Andrew prepares for 1000ft abseil down London's Shard tower | Mail Online

Andrew is getting ready to make his abseil but I really can't believe the nasty comments being posted - some wishing/hoping that he falls and dies.

It's a sad world; must admit, those sort of nasty comments on the DM made me a bit concerned when i went to the UK for a holiday this year; i thought to myself, British people can't ALL be like that. And they weren't. Most of them were just fine, just lovely. But somehow the DM brings out the worst (and occasionally, just sometimes, the best) in people.

Personally i hope Prince Andrew does well; it's a tougher thing to do at his age than when he was a young chap. Good for him to even think of trying.

P.S. I hardly ever go on the DM site anymore; it's too depressing.

Now that is just plain nasty. Prince Andrew might have his faults but wishing that is just cruel I would like some of them to try and do what he is going to do. Some people will never be happy!

Charles

Same here - though not to the same extent - but with a broad description of his 'social decline' , e.g. some of the things he did as trade ambassador or his Florida-acquaintance. All in all a bit nasty, too.

Andrew abseiled down The Shard about an hour ago, he said he was scared at the top and the worst bit was looking down.

His Royal HIGHNESS! Prince Andrew abseils down Europe's tallest building the Shard to raise £300,000 for charity
Quote:
Prince Andrew has completed a daredevil abseil down the Shard in London to raise £300,000 for charity. The Duke of York scaled down the outside of Europe's tallest building as part of a group of 40 supporting The Outward Bound Trust and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. The 52-year-old royal, who started from the 87th floor and finished on level 20, said afterwards: 'I will never do it again.'
Don't mean to sound negative, but he didn't exactly abseil, did he? He was lowered from the top of the Shard - which is still a pretty impressive feat, mind you.
