I actually got the impression from that article that it wasn't Prince Andrew's specific role that was being criticized...it was the effectiveness of the entire company. The company says Andrew is effective...the world doesn't think the company is effective!

UKTI can hardly turn around and say the 'boss' is a waste of time, it is not 'the world' that thinks it is a waste of money, it is the businesses it was supposed to be helping.

Sorry, that's what I meant...the UK business is general.

Andrew isn't "the boss"--he's just their "ambassador." UKTI tells him what to do, not the other way around.

Mmm, I don't know that it is a case of them telling him. I understand they present him with a number of suggested engagements and he then decides which it will be convenient for him to do.

I must confess that the only time I placed any value or gave Sir any attention in his current role was when he was accompanied by his elder duaghter to Egypt.

His daughter's presence gave traction to his mision;made it memorable.

Sir would deliver much more traction if he was accompanied on his missions by his best friend, the Duchess.

Andrew as Special Representative for International Trade and
Investment is in the State of Qatar at the moment:

Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani (R) and Britain's Prince
Andrew, the Duke of York (2nd L), applaud during the inauguration
ceremony of the Qatargas 2 plant in the northern Ras Laffan industrial
zone on April 6, 2009. The Qatargas 2 project provides a production
capacity of 15 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year.

I find it puzzling ... Prince Andrew has attended the inauguration ceremony in Qatar, while Prince Charles has intervened to try to block the construction project backed by the Qatari Royal family.

I don't see what's puzzling about it. Andrew is at the opening of a liquefied natural gas plant in Qatar; in a week or two the Emir of Qatar will be in Wales to open, with the Queen, the receiving terminal for the gas. In the meantime Charles has approached the Emir asking him to reconsider the design of a block of flats in London.
I'm sure the Al Thanis will have no difficulty in treating the gas plant and the block of flats as separate and unrelated issues.

TheRecord.com - CanadaWorld - Prince Andrew will attend local military homecoming

Colonel-in-Chief Prince Andrew Duke of York will welcome home his Waterloo Region-based troops this month, in the largest return of veterans since the Korean War.

The veterans, all reservists in the Royal Highland Fusiliers have served in Afghanistan for six to nine months and are part of the standard rotation of troops. It just happens they are all due to come home at the same time, said Major Paul Pickering, operations officer at the Fusiliers' Cambridge armoury.

Since yesterday Prince Andrew is in Canada:

Britain's Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, speaks with a member of the
Princess Louise Fusiliers during a trooping of the colors ceremony at the
Citadel in Halifax, Nova Scotia, April 23, 2009. The prince is the colonel-
in-chief of the Canadian regiment which traces it's origins back to the
founding of the city in 1749.

This definitely seems like more of a Charles story than an Andrew story, but apparently...

UTV News - Andrew, the unlikely eco-warrior

On another note, there were a couple of clips of Prince Andrew on the CBC news tonight (Sunday night) but I never found out what Andrew was doing. I was watching the news with my mom, and in the time it took for her to insist repeatedly that this couldn't be Prince Andrew, and me to assure her that it was, and her to finally reveal that she expected him to look "about 30" because this was the last time she could remember seeing him...I missed what the clip was about! So if any Canadian viewers could enlighten me, that would be appreciated. :)
