Don't you read the news BeatrixFan, she has a job and even if she didn't, she still does not deserve this treatment. The photographer on sky admitted that they are running backwards, with the cameras 'in her face', not across the road, not 10 yards away. I am not making any comparisons with Diana, I am simply looking at what they are doing to a taxpaying member of the public, who happens to be dating a young man called William Wales!

It's common sense. I feel like I could find her flat blindfolded within an hour of arriving in London. And I've never been to London.
This sounds like a fun, we should start a send Luv to London fund.

While some of the photographers stand on the street, others are hidden in blacked-out vans and still more are waiting on motorbikes, the "snapper" on the pillion. (Last week, for the first time, the bike riders had earpieces and were clearly co-ordinating their pursuit of their quarry military-style.)

This sounds like it is getting dangerous, and other celebrities have had police protection when paps started to endanger others. Madonna son had a police escort when he arrived at the London airport.

Totally agree. But I think Charles is paying temporarily until William comes into his $$$ when he turns 25 this summer. But that won't stop the carping. Because we all know it's not about the security or the cost of security or who's providing the security or who's paying for the security.

It's about hatred of a perfect stranger because this ordinary girl nabbed the fair haired prince and some people can't stand it. All based on PAPARAZZI PICTURES. And imaginations that rival anything JK Rowling could ever dream up.

KATE TO BE GIVEN 24-HOUR GUARDS

Kate Middleton will be given round-the-clock police protection – fuelling speculation that boyfriend Prince William will propose.

"The move has been requested by Prince Charles who is worried about Miss Middleton's security"

If William doesn't propose, after all the hoops people are jumping through for her, I'll be surprised. I wouldn't imagine the family being this proactive about her if she was just a fling or not considered "suitable" marriage material.

That said, it is utterly amazing to me, and maybe it's because I'm American.....but she's not anyone of real consequence right now. She's just a girlfriend, nothing more, nothing less and they're treating her like she's already Queen or something. I don't get it. Yeah we have people chasing celebrities around here, but if one of them is dating someone, they aren't forced to get police protection, whether through their own request or someone else's.

This isn't Kate's fault, so she shouldn't be blamed. She's not requesting the police protection, so she shouldn't be blamed for that either. She's dating Prince William yes, but that doesn't mean she forfeits the right to privacy and the feeling that she's not going to get run off the road or chased down the street by some shutter-happy photogs.

I'm reopening the thread after a discussion among the British moderators.

Unless there's some more hard news about this police protection, I think the discussion on this thread has gone past its sell-by date. For the moment there's just a lot of repetition and going round in circles, and most of it is based on some rather sketchy sources. If anyone thinks the general issue of police protection and what that might mean for Kate's status is worth its own thread, they're welcome to PM one or all of the British mods to make suggestions for how the thread might work.

In the meantime, please could we move on.

Thanks.

But we all know... Diana wasn't protected, even before the divorce.

I feel bad for these kids. It's a wonder Kate doesn't tell William to take a flying leap (and a wonder William and Harry are able to find any girls willing to take a chance on a serious relationship with them).

I wasn't talking about Diana. I was saying that if Catherine does become Williams wife, Princess of Wales, Duchess of wherever or Queen, she will be afforded a lot more security.
The world has become a lot more dangerous since Diana's time.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood you, Skydragon.

I agree with you entirely, we were very naive before 2001 about security issues, aside from the dangers the papparazzi pose (I was thinking about the time when then Lady Diana was mobbed by photographers, when one of them was walking backwards and fell, and then when they were hounding her so badly when she was pregnant with Wills and the Queen had to call in the press and tell them to back off).

Does anyone have the video of the GMA segment they did on Kate on today? Thank-you. Or does anyone know where I can find it?

Prince Charles plans test case to protect Kate Middleton

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...537554,00.html

The message seems to be getting across, includes snippet that The Sun (owned by parent co. of the paper running the story) will not use paparazzi pictures of her anymore

Quote:
Last night a senior editorial executive at The Sun said that the paper had decided not to use any more paparazzi pictures of Ms Middleton. They they would no longer be part of the “media circus” outside her door, he added.

It's good to see The Sun recognizing that they might have gone too far with their photographic pursuits.

Yes, even now with her still a private citizen, I think her parents must have become worried and requested this new Metro police protection. I read in one of the recent articles, forgot which one, but it had a quote from a Metropolitan police officer who said that as a member of the public, Kate has a right to be protected from undue harassment.
Did it occur to anyone that there may have been litigation already between lawyers for the Middletons and lawyers for the media, and that the issue was perhaps settled by a police protection order? Is it possible? I don't know how these matters work, but it seems logical to me.

If some of the press about her with independent/modern/etc spirit hold true, perhaps she should make an honest man out of William and do the proposal.

Happy Birthday!

Well, I've just seen the news and I'm furious. Now, one or two photographers yes. It's acceptable. But this is outrageous. They've just showed footage of photographers running at Kate, flashing their cameras in her face, swarming her so that she has no choice but to look up. And what does she do? She just walks on and carries on with her day. That girl's got grace, these journalists have dung for brains. They want locking up. Media attention is expected, she's bought into the media attention by dating a Prince but this really is outrageous. I was so shocked when I saw them running at her, I shouted at the television. Disgusting.

I don;t know if anyone else feels this way but I just wish the press would calm down a bit.

Maybe she is the ONE but many people date for years and years, end up splitting then one partner goes ont o marry someone else very soon after. We can not be sure that William is even thinking of marriage let alone to Kate and how will her life be if they do not stay together.

Her early 20's have been spent with the press building her up into the Queen of England and it may not even happen. Why can't they just say future wife of William!

In a dream World , if William has no plans to marry maybe he should say so in some kind of interview or statement, I know that is not a regular thing to do but it might stop all this drama. I know he said so in the past and the press would probably not listen anyway but this whole atmosphere around Kate can not possibly be allowed to go on for too much longer without something being said.

I used to enjoy reading the odd story about Kate and seeing some pictures but it seems the press is wanting to make her into the new Diana by writing stories saying it is terrible how she is being treated.

William is 24, now in the army and that is HUGE for anyone let alone couple. Personally I feel an engagement at this stage would be silly, he does not have a normal life and I am not sure he or Kate need the pressure of being a Royal couple carrying out duties.

Obviously Diana was very young when she married but Charles had lived a good bit and had some experience in life.

Kate would have protection and that sort of security if she was to become his fiancee but it would be terrible if they got rushed into it.

I just feel the press, public et al need to take a chill pill, would Kate take up a job (I know she was meant to be working for her father or someone) if she was about to get engaged?? I am not so sure.

It is uncomfortable to watch and I feel bad for William and Kate, they are not a soap or tv show but two YOUNG people living in a media obsessed world and I just wish I could press PAUSE and let them live a little without speculation.

I am going to get of my soapbox now, I wish Kate/Catherine a very happy birthday and just hope this all calms down before too long.

I think we have to look at the facts. 1) Kate obviously loves William to go through this. 2) William loves her and she's important to him. 3) Her recent movements show her stepping out into the limelight a little bit more each time. I would say that this is the one. Most definately. The press obviously think that too - SO WHY PHOTOGRAPH HER NOW?! They are going to have decades to photograph Kate, how many photographs of each minute of each day do they need? They won't all be printed, they won't all be sold, so why do this to her? It's just not fair.
